When Qu Fan got off from the bus, he felt strange when he saw the place, looking from left to right, there were only blue mountains and green waters(1) elsewhere, and the landscape was very beautiful with no pollution of the smoke. His boyfriend, Miao Jingwen, looked somewhat impatient as he frowned in his handsome face, which was rather unusual since he always looked calm, gentle and refined.
Qu Fan jogged past him and grabbed his hand, “Husband, what’s wrong?”
Miao Jingwen grasped his hand and replied with a gentle and soft voice, “It’s nothing, Fanfan, you must remember what I told you, never expose it.”
Qu Fan became unhappy, “If you’re afraid that I’ll embarrass you, then you don’t have to bring me back.”
“I didn’t mean that.” Miao Jingwen embraced him, then kissed him on the lips and looked at his eyes, “No matter what you look like, I will never be ashamed because you are the most precious treasure I’ve found in this world.”
When Qu Fan heard him explain, he relaxed and hugged his neck coquettishly, “Then, can we really stay for a week and your parents won’t be against us?”
“No, I’ve written about it in the letter.”
Qu Fan sighed, “Just in what time are you that you still need to write a letter? Don’t you have a mobile phone? It’s not like that you don’t have electricity,” He looked around, besides rivers, he also saw the tall mountains, and he couldn’t tell up to where these stretched, then the corner of his mouth curled up as he mocked him, “Should we wait for your family to come and pick us up in an ox car?”
Miao Jingwen’s smile stiffened a little, “No…”
They waited for a little while, and when the sun was about to set, they heard the sounds of a moving wheel and they saw an approaching black sedan. It shocked Qu Fan to see it, a luxury brand of car that was rarely seen even in the city, yet there was one here, in such a remote mountain, it was truly surprising.
When the car stopped in front of them, Qu Fan was still not calm, when he saw someone get off from the driver’s seat and treated Miao Jingwen with utmost courtesy, “Third young master, I apologize for making you wait so long.”
Miao Jingwen revealed a smile, “It’s alright Uncle Zhang, long time no see.”
After Uncle Zhang bowed to him and smiled, he helped in moving their luggages and stored them in the car’s trunk, then he opened the car’s door for them, respectfully inviting them inside. Miao Jingwen seemed to be accustomed to such manners, pulling Qu Fan’s hand into the passenger seat.
It was only when the car was restarted that Qu Fan regained his mind, and is it real that the man in front of them called Uncle Zhang was actually wearing a Changshan(2)? He was also wearing a circular cap(3), his outfit was not in the trend of 21st century people but more similar to the style in the period of the Republic of China.
Miao Jingwen seemed to be aware of his curiosity as he whispered, “Uncle Zhang is the steward of my mother, my family’s… I think I have told this to you before.”
Qu Fan nodded and became nervous since he was unable to make head or tail(4) of the situation, “Does your place belong to some patriarchal clan? Will they be very strict with their rules?”
Miao Jingwen didn’t answer anymore and only patted his head with a doting gaze, “Don’t be afraid.”
Qu Fan noticed his trouble which was most unlikely to be unrelated to his uncle, distracting him, and his previous mood when on one’s vacation was destroyed, it was just now that he realized that they had entered a very peculiar place.
Though they were in the middle of the mountains, he saw a road so exclusive that it was even cemented, preventing any bumps, and as the car turned left and right, Qu Fan felt dizzy that he could only lean on Miao Jingwen, his arms hugging his waist.
Miao Jingwen held him firmly and touched his cheeks, “We’re almost there. You should go sleep for a little while…”
Qu Fan, who didn’t feel drowsy, after listening to his voice, felt his eyelids become so heavy, and closed these after a bitter struggle, sinking into a deep sleep.
Later when Miao Jingwen woke him up, Qu Fan rubbed his eyes, thinking that he still hadn’t slept enough, then rising from his boyfriend’s lap, he was still dazed as he got out from the car, and it was only when the cold breeze blew that he finally became clear-headed. The sky was already dark unlike what he was seeing before him, there were magnificent buildings erected on this place with two special giant lanterns hanging on its gate, and their light was so strong enough to illuminate the area clearly.
♠
He saw a tall and imposing ancient building, and a plaque was attached to its gate which was inscribed with three characters “Ren Shan Tang“(5), Qu Fan knew these words but he couldn’t understand the context. Their luggage had already been taken inside so Miao Jingwen grabbed Qu Fan’s hand as they entered, and Qu Fan just discovered his sweaty hands, suddenly feeling nervous again.
A courtyard was beyond the gate, followed by the house, the place was so enormous and looking archaic which was rare. Qu Fan walked after his boyfriend, and when he raised his head, he saw the crystal chandelier hanging in the living, softly releasing his breath.
Inside the room were furniture made of wood and thick flannelette blankets laid on the floor, and only the fruit tray at the table was made of crystal glass which didn’t look strange at all.
Quite a few people were already sitting inside the room, Miao Jingwen paused and pulled Qu Fan, then they approached the man sitted in the center and stopped before him, he warmly spoke, “Eldest brother, I’m back.”
Qu Fan first noticed this man as they entered the room because he was too conspicuous, one might think that he was a woman when they look from his back, after all, he had a very long hair that almost reached his waist, and it was only when he saw the front of this person did he realized that this was a man who was still handsome even while wearing Changshan and a pair of embroidered buxie(6). The man sat upright while leisurely drinking from a cup of tea, barely showing half of his face, his face remained looking at his cup, and only after the person finished savoring his tea, raised his head.
When Qu Fan saw his face, he was shocked as his heart skipped a beat. His gaze looked so oppressive that it made him seem evil, making Qu Fan very uncomfortable that he looked away.
It was just when the person plastered a thin smile on his face that he spoke in his low and deep voice, “Jing Wen, you left this home for four years, are you finally coming back?”
Miao Jingwen smiled and replied, “Eldest brother, I can explain, I always planned to visit during these years but my school works were so heavy that I could not do it.”
The man only stared at him before shifting his eyes to Qu Fan, then he spoke, “Is this the man you’ve chosen to spend a lifetime with, don’t you want to introduce him?”
Miao Jingwen replied, “I’ll greet my second brother first.” He walked to the fair man wearing eyeglasses, then smiled, “Second brother, I’m back.”
When Qu Fan looked at the man, he saw that he was not wearing something ancient, just having a plain white shirt and black suit trouser, with a thick book was in his hands
The man gently closed the book and replied to Miao Jingwen as he smiled, “Third brother had just returned home and is fatigued by a long journey, you must be tired.”
After Miao Jingwen finished greeting his brothers, he introduced Qu Fan, “Fanfan, this is my eldest brother, Miao Jingrong, who is now the head of this family, and this is my second brother, Miao Jingchun, a doctor. Brothers, this is my boyfriend, Qu Fan who was in the same year as my college classmate, it was our third year when we started getting to know each other and continued dating until now, this time I especially brought him here for both of you and father to take a look.”
Qu Fan suddenly became careful as he was about to greet them, because he just realized that despite all the people inside the room, only these two people were qualified to be introduced by his boyfriend and the others were probably of no importance.
♠
Miao Jingrong observed Qu Fan and gently laughed, “Father is currently not at home, forget about it, but before you ask, have a meal first.” When he stood up and walked to the dining room, Qu Fan discovered that he was very tall, about more than a half of his boyfriend’s head.
There were already dishes on the table, looking so delicious, and after a whole day inside the car, Qu Fan was already hungry so he ate silently the two big bowls of rice. Compared to him, the three men in the Miao family were eating slowly, making Qu Fan feel embarrassed with their elegant postures, and he only slowed down his eating when he realized that he felt bloated.
Through their small talk, Qu Fan learned a bit of the Miao(7) family’s background.
In the area of medicine, because the old ways in the past had begun to change when the Western medicine was introduced into the market, Miao Jingwen’s second brother, Miao Jingchun, chose to be a surgeon whose name became later renowned in the city.
They started talking first in Mandarin then slowly changed the language, the one that Qu Fan found similar from the book of heaven(8).
After he was finished eating, he felt awkward so he just stayed on his spot, bringing out his phone to amuse himself, and when he noticed that there was a wireless connection, he finally felt relieved. Luckily, this house wasn’t so out of the ordinary.
As he saw that Qu Fan was already done with his dinner, Miao Jingwen took him to the bedroom, and as soon as Qu Fan saw the modern bed and furnitures with the same style, he rushed happily onto it, rolling around on its soft sheet, then reaching out to his boyfriend, “Husband, hug.”
Miao Jingwen complied, hugging him in his arms while ruffling his hair.
“No, I was just a little curious since this place is quite backwards, and it turned out that your family is so big, eh, local tyrant.” Qu Fan reached out for his neck and kissed him. In return, Miao Jingwen squinted his eyes as he kissed his soft lips. This was just supposed to be a fleeting touch but their kissing was getting hot, with Qu Fan sending his own tongue to the man for it to be licked and sucked, and they’ve been already living together for such a long time, doing this kind of thing several times a day which did not even make them tired of each other. Instead, they became more intimate. Miao Jingwen stretched out his tongue to suck his mouth all over, mixing their saliva altogether, and till the last entwining of their tongues, both of them seemed to want to continue their kissing.
They were still doing that when they heard a knocking sound from the door, so the two separated, and Qu Fan’s eyes were still brimming with tears, making him so alluring that Miao Jingwen’s penis was already erected, its tip touching his crotch, also hardening Qu Fan’s own.
The knocking on the door continued, and as they looked at each other’s face, their heated gaze dampened, then Qu Fan pushed him away, “You go open the door and look who is finding you.”
“Mm.” Miao Jingwen stood up from the bed, and because his crotch was obviously protruded, it made his walking posture somewhat unnatural, making Qu Fan smile while his helpless boyfriend pleaded with his eyes.
Miao Jingwen slightly opened the door, only revealing his face, then he saw the aide of his second brother and asked, “A’Yuan? What is it?” A’Yuan respectfully replied, “Third young master, the second young master is looking for you.”
Miao Jingwen nodded, “Let him wait for me.” Then he closed the door and the smile on his face faded, “Fanfan, just stay in this room, don’t go out no matter who called for you, and wait until I return, do you understand?”
Qu Fan nodded, not taking it seriously, “Mm, hurry up and come back.”
After Miao Jingwen left, he stayed on the bed for a while as he played with his phone, and in less than five minutes, there was someone knocking at the door again. At first, Qu Fan considered ignoring it but he was also afraid that this person might be looking for his boyfriend, so he ran to the door in slippers.
Uncle Zhang, who they met before this evening, was outside the door, smiling amiably at him, “Mr. Qu, the first young master is inviting you to come over.”
Qu Fan was dumbfounded, “Right now? But Jingwen hasn’t come back yet……”
“He only asked for you alone, he wanted to chat about the situation of the third young master in school.”
“Oh, then let’s go.” Qu Fan followed him without any doubt.
