The weather was scorching, and it was just past noon. The scorching sun beat down on the barren land, and at this time, the villagers all returned home to rest, seeking shade and avoiding the intense heat.
Suddenly, an uneven panting broke the tranquility of the field.
"Hurry up, don't let anyone find us!"
A man and a woman were rolling together in the cornfield. Not far from them, in a ditch, lay a cold, lifeless body. The body, dressed in a floral-patterned dress stained with blood and patched, had a noticeable red swelling on the exposed forehead, and the person had long since stopped breathing.
"Don't worry, I know this place well; no one is around!"
What was that noise, so loud and disturbing her sleep!
She had just finished work and returned home. As a senior executive in a Fortune 500 company, her workload was naturally higher than anyone else's, and she worked in one of the most stressful professions, venture capital!
"Hurry up! If someone finds out, we'll both be thrown into a pig cage!" the woman whispered urgently.
Jiang Wan was annoyed by the noise, feeling weak and powerless, with a nauseating smell in her nostrils. Her fingers could barely move. Could it be that she was so tired from work that she was hallucinating?
The noise grew louder, and Jiang Wan suddenly sat up, closing her eyes tightly and shouting, "Can't a person get some sleep around here!"
"Who! Hurry up!"
The woman heard the voice and shrieked.
Jiang Wan opened her eyes wide at the sound, not taking the time to look around. She saw the man charging at her with a sickle in his hand and, terrified, scrambled out of the ditch, shouting, "Help! Murder!"
The man, frightened, shouted, "Shut up! I'll kill you!"
Hearing the man's threat, Jiang Wan, regardless of her aching body, gritted her teeth and ran even faster, her voice louder than before, "Murder! Murder!"
She ran aimlessly, not knowing where she was.
Suddenly, a voice came from ahead.
"There's a sound from the east field!"
"It can't be, that place is haunted!"
"What's there to be afraid of in broad daylight! Let's go together! I thought I heard the voice of Jiang's eldest daughter, let's go check it out!"
Jiang Wan saw figures ahead and shouted desperately, "Help! Someone is trying to kill me!"
The man, seeing familiar faces, was so scared that he didn't even pull up his pants, turned around, and ran, picking up his clothes from the ground.
If the villagers saw him, he might be exposed, and then he and Li Guihua would be in big trouble! He thought it wasn't worth it, as the girl hadn't seen his face. If he denied it, what could she do?
Seeing the man no longer pursuing her, Jiang Wan knelt on the ground, gasping for breath, and then fainted.
Before she lost consciousness, her only thought was, "Is this a joke from heaven? Did I really travel through time?"
A voice sounded in her ear.
"This is really Jiang's eldest daughter. She's still breathing, let's take her back!"
When Jiang Wan woke up, she saw a tattered curtain above her, washed until it was almost white, and her clothes were patched. Her body ached terribly.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through her head, and a flood of memories that were not hers surged into her mind, causing her unbearable pain. She fainted again before she could fully regain consciousness. At the same time, she realized that the body she had taken over was also named Jiang Wan, the fourth in her family. She had two older brothers, Jiang Jie and Jiang Hao, and an older sister, Jiang Jing, who had reached the age of marriage but was not yet married.
Because she was born as the fourth child, a fortune-teller had declared her inauspicious. Her father had originally planned to abandon her, but he couldn't bear to do it and raised her. Since then, she had been considered an inauspicious girl in the village.
Because of this, her family was the least favored by her grandmother. Her birth mother also resented her, always wearing a sour face. The young Jiang Wan, being sensible, tried to change everyone's perception by working hard with her father to gather herbs in the mountains. However, just after her tenth birthday, her father fell from the mountain while gathering herbs to buy her new clothes and died.
Left as an orphan, she and her mother were considered even more inauspicious and were driven out of the village, with people saying that her mother and she were a curse to the Jiang family.
As for her, she endured her mother's beatings and her sister's taunts, but her two brothers, who cared for her, were conscripted into the army, leaving the family in dire straits.
Sweat broke out on Jiang Wan's forehead.
How terrifying!
She had read about people traveling through time in novels, and they always became princesses or concubines, at the very least living a life of comfort. But for her, her father was gone, her mother didn't love her, and her family didn't care for her. She was considered a curse in the village. Was this really fair?
"Mother, why did you bring this dead girl back!" Jiang Jing cried, pulling on her mother's sleeve, "She was finally dead, and if she comes back, how will I ever get married!"
"I never thought this dead girl would come back alive!" Jiang Mother's face was full of malice, and she was furious at the sight of the living person on the bed.
Jiang Wan couldn't move, but her hearing was still good.
She heard everything clearly, never expecting this from her birth mother and sister.
"Mother, why don't you just throw her away again! The Li family already looks down on us. If I can't find a husband, I'll be an old maid, and I'll never get married. I might as well die!"
Jiang Jing said this and then lunged at a pillar, scaring Jiang Mother pale.
"Good girl, let's think of another way!" Jiang Mother held her back, thinking, "This girl is quite pretty. We could sell her as a child bride. That way, we can get you a dowry, and you won't be too poor when you marry, and no one will bully you!"
Jiang Jing's eyes lit up, and she stopped crying, smiling, "Mother, are you serious? There's a market in a few days. I saw some fabric on East Street last time. If I can get a new dress, I won't be laughed at when I get married."
Jiang Wan's teeth clenched in anger. Was this really her sister? She wanted to slap her and shout, "I'm still your sister!"
Jiang Mother hesitated for a moment and then decided, "Alright, let's do it. This girl is quite pretty; we can get five taels of silver for her!"
As soon as she said this, Jiang Wan, furious, sat up from the bed, her eyes fixed on them with a cold, hateful gaze. She was worth only five taels of silver?
In the 21st century, she, Jiang Wan, was a stunning beauty, with a perfect figure and a face that could turn heads. Men who pursued her could circle the capital city three times!
