Mrs. Susan Clyde sat by the window, looking at the letter that had been sent from the distant United States.
The signature was Bruce Edson, but Mrs. Susan knew that the letter was written by Emma. Only Emma could write such beautiful handwriting.
The letter was heartfelt, hoping that Susan would take care of Emma's daughter, Catherine, for about six months to a year, or even longer.
Susan still remembered Emma.
But in her memory, Emma should have been a little girl who dreamed of dancing ballet. The money to send her to the Royal Ballet School in England was sponsored by Mrs. Susan.
Now nearly 50 years old, Mrs. Susan is Bruce's sister, but during World War II, she became Mrs. Clyde. Her home is a villa in the suburbs of London. Her husband, Clyde, was once a British nobleman.
This place was damaged during World War II, and her husband died in the war.
However, her family business did not decline but gradually revived under Mrs. Susan's hard work. Although the business is not large, in the current era where British nobility has declined, her family is still living quite well, even luxuriously.
Since World War II, Mrs. Susan has felt that people's hearts are not as pure as they used to be. The streets are filled with fashionable young girls who are so casual, which was simply unimaginable in the past!
In the eyes of the former upper nobility, today's girls are really getting worse with each generation.
After finishing the letter, Mrs. Susan frowned.
If she understood correctly, it seemed that Catherine had gotten into big trouble, so her parents were sending her here for education. However, the wording was vague, and Mrs. Susan's understanding might be a bit off.
"Has Kate gone bad?"
Susan had only been to the United States once, in 1950, when she met Catherine, who was only two years old at the time. To her, Catherine should have been a lovely and well-behaved girl.
But according to the tone of the letter, it seemed that she had started to go bad and had gotten into serious trouble.
Susan was deeply concerned. She felt responsible for her brother's request.
At least, when Catherine leaves, she should be a reliable young lady.
According to the letter, Catherine would arrive soon.
By the afternoon, Catherine had arrived, accompanied by two bodyguards.
"Oh, Kate."
It must be said, Catherine had grown into a beautiful young woman.
However, her attire made Mrs. Susan frown.
She was wearing cashmere socks and a miniskirt, which Mrs. Susan found terrifying. But she was still happy to see her long-lost niece.
"Aunt, hello." Catherine smiled and greeted her.
"Find a place to sit. I'll have the maid bring you a cup of tea. It's afternoon tea time."
"Okay."
Catherine knew that in many places in Europe and America, there is a custom of having afternoon tea, but her family had long abandoned this tradition.
"Good heavens, Kate, what happened to your hands?!"
Susan was surprised to see the calluses on Catherine's hands.
"Just a bit of work," Catherine smiled.
In fact, her bodyguards had brought many tools with them. But Catherine was now mainly reading books on directing. "Wasteland" had given her a good feeling, but she knew she still needed to improve.
Catherine sat comfortably on the sofa.
The air in Britain was more oppressive than in America.
Europe, in the midst of the Cold War, was under greater pressure than the United States.
After all, the United States and the Soviet Union were separated by the sea, but the Soviet Union and Europe shared a land border. European countries had no effective defense against the Soviet tank tactics.
Since arriving in Britain, Catherine had felt a sense of oppression.
Although there were still fashionable young people on the streets, compared to the vibrant United States, this place was lacking.
In America, gender discrimination still existed, though not as severe as in China.
In Britain, the gap between men and women was even greater.
People needed a "breakout."
Otherwise, in "history," miniskirts would not have been invented by the British.
Catherine sat on the sofa, spreading her legs for comfort.
But Susan frowned again.
"Kate."
Catherine followed her aunt's gaze and saw that it was focused on her thighs. She smiled awkwardly and closed her legs.
"Kate, your parents have entrusted you to me, and I must take responsibility for you."
Mrs. Susan said earnestly to Catherine.
Catherine nodded seriously.
But neither Catherine nor Mrs. Susan realized that a misunderstanding had already arisen between them, and it was a huge one.
Catherine had come with a vacation mindset, while Mrs. Susan intended to correct the bad habits of a wayward girl.
After afternoon tea, Catherine went to the room Mrs. Susan had prepared for her and began to unpack with the help of the maids.
"Kate, I've arranged a personal maid to take care of your daily needs. She will come over a bit later."
"Thank you, Aunt. But I don't need it." Catherine kindly declined her aunt's offer, but Mrs. Susan felt something was off.
"That bag, I'll take it!"
Catherine suddenly noticed that the maids were about to open one of her small suitcases.
She immediately jumped up.
The contents inside were things she had brought to avoid her parents' discovery. If they were found here, it would be disastrous.
But unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. Catherine walked over and bumped into one of the maids, and then...
Mr. Angle fell out...
At that moment, the air in the room seemed to freeze.
Catherine quickly picked it up and smiled awkwardly.
She didn't use it often, but to prevent her parents from finding it while tidying her room, she had brought it along.
...Who knew that when she was about to leave, she would find this thing still in her house?
Mrs. Susan's face turned ashen, and she opened her mouth but couldn't find the words to say.
Finally, she left without a word, waiting for the maids to finish tidying the room before leaving together.
"Oh no..."
Catherine scratched her head.
She was thinking about how to explain the situation at dinner.
But at that moment, there was a knock on the door.
"Miss Edson?"
"Yes, come in."
A few maids walked in, each holding a measuring tape, but it was unclear what they were for.
"Mrs. Clyde has decided to have a custom-made outfit made for you and would like to take your measurements."
Catherine nodded. She hadn't brought many clothes due to her hasty departure, so she couldn't refuse her aunt's kindness.
And perhaps this was to resolve the awkwardness from earlier.
