In the eighth month of the ninth year of the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty, in Shuzhou of the Jian'nan Circuit, at the foot of Mount Qingcheng, there was a village called Shiqiao Village.
At noon, all was quiet, and the green mountains and forests were filled with the sounds of birds and cicadas, echoing in the silent valley, making one feel increasingly irritable.
At the entrance of the village, under a large locust tree, seven or eight villagers gathered in the shade, their expressions solemn as they gazed at a solitary thatched cottage not far away, their eyes filled with reverence and excitement.
A peddler carrying a load of goods slowly approached from the end of the mountain path. Seeing the villagers gathered under the locust tree, he cleared his throat and called out loudly.
"Barley and rice for cloth, pottery jars, and needles and thread..."
Before he could finish, a villager shouted, "You damn fool, what are you shouting for? Get lost!"
The peddler, like a rooster suddenly having its neck grabbed, choked back his words, his neck turning red from the effort.
No one paid him any attention; all seven or eight villagers were focused on the dilapidated thatched cottage not far away.
The peddler, who had traveled far and wide and was familiar with the villages and towns around Mount Qingcheng, even remembering the names and faces of each villager, carried his load of goods and traded small items like pottery jars, cloth, and needles for food from the villagers in various villages. Over the years, he had become friends with many of them.
Naturally, he recognized the seven or eight villagers in front of him. Unbothered by the villager's scolding, he curiously approached and whispered, "What are you all looking at?"
No one answered him.
The peddler, used to being ignored, didn't mind. He had a thick skin, having learned to give himself a warm embrace over the years.
Narrowing his eyes, he examined the unremarkable thatched cottage and frowned. "Hmm? Isn't that the Gu family's house? What happened to the Gu family's child?"
A villager, unable to tolerate the peddler's chatter, replied irritably, "There's only one child left in the Gu family, Gu Qing. In the past, Gu Qing was timid and afraid of trouble, never daring to stand up for himself..."
The peddler nodded in agreement. "That's right, I remember that child. He was too honest, and everyone could bully him. I've seen the children from your village chase and beat him several times. It's a pity."
The villager sneered. "Gu Qing was honest? That was before yesterday."
"Oh? What do you mean?"
"Yesterday afternoon, something happened to Gu Qing, and his personality suddenly changed. Our village's little tyrant, Ding Erlang, was chasing and beating him. Gu Qing was running and dodging when he tripped and hit his head on a large rock, bleeding profusely. He lay on the ground for a while, then got up, and he was completely different..."
The peddler asked curiously, "What was he like?"
"He became like a cornered rabbit, turning around to chase and beat Ding Erlang. First, he threw a handful of sand in Ding Erlang's eyes, then rode on his back, punching him repeatedly until Ding Erlang cried for his parents. After Ding Erlang begged for mercy, Gu Qing stopped, but not before asking if he was satisfied. With his face beaten to a pulp, Ding Erlang naturally dared not say no. It didn't end there; Gu Qing made him shout two strange words loudly. Only after Ding Erlang shouted did Gu Qing let him go..."
The peddler asked with interest, "What were the two words?"
The villager glanced at him sideways, using a sneer to hide his embarrassment at not having heard the words clearly.
The peddler chuckled and looked around. "So, why are so many of you gathered here today, watching Gu Qing's house? Is there more to see?"
The villager looked around furtively and whispered, "Ding Erlang's older brother, Ding Dalang, is one of the notorious bullies in our village. He's unreasonable and always looking for trouble. Yesterday, when Ding Dalang was in the county, he heard that his brother was beaten. How could he swallow this humiliation? He just announced that he would avenge his brother. It looks like the show is about to start..."
As he spoke, a commotion arose from the southwest corner of the village. A burly man led the way to the Gu family's thatched cottage, followed by a short, bruised youth. These two were clearly Ding Dalang and Ding Erlang.
Behind them, at a distance of about two zhang, a group of villagers followed, wary of the brothers' tyranny but unwilling to miss the spectacle. They followed like a gang of criminals eyeing their prey.
Under the locust tree, Villager A sighed worriedly. "Today, the Gu family's child is in trouble. Ding Dalang is known for his ruthlessness. Several of our fellow villagers have been crippled by him in the past..."
Just then, Ding Dalang stood in front of the thatched cottage, pointing at the frail wooden door and shouting.
"Gu Qing, come out and face your fate! If I don't cripple you today, I'll be ashamed of my brother's beating!"
The surrounding villagers, who had been noisy, fell silent.
The dilapidated thatched cottage stood quietly in the scorching summer sun, its door closed, with no sign of movement inside.
Ding Dalang paced back and forth in front of the door, his expression growing more and more menacing, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
"Gu Qing, don't force me. Come out on your own, and I'll spare your life. If I have to drag you out, I'll kill you!" Ding Dalang shouted hoarsely.
There was still no response from inside the cottage.
After a long while, as Ding Dalang grew increasingly impatient, the door of the thatched cottage suddenly opened a crack. A hand reached out, its index finger pointing up, beckoning to Ding Dalang. It paused, then beckoned again, and a voice full of provocation came from inside.
"Come over here!"
The surrounding villagers gasped in shock, and Ding Dalang, taken aback, then flew into a rage. He kicked open the door and strode into the courtyard, a cruel smile on his face.
"Good, you're a man. If I don't cripple you today, how can I stand in Shiqiao Village? Wait and see!"
Behind him, Ding Erlang, seeing his brother take the lead, hurriedly followed. As the two brothers walked into the courtyard, they suddenly felt something strange under their feet. Their faces changed, and with two cries of "Ouch!" they disappeared into the ground, half of their bodies sinking into a pit.
The surrounding villagers, still in shock, heard the brothers' anguished screams. The bolder villagers curiously approached and saw that a large pit had been dug in the center of the courtyard, filled with sharpened wooden stakes. The pit was covered with straw and dirt to disguise it, making it indistinguishable from the ground. The brothers had stepped into the pit...
The sharpened stakes were covered in the brothers' blood. Fortunately, they had not pierced their abdomens, only their feet. The two brothers were half-buried in the pit, trembling in pain and screaming loudly.
The faces of the surrounding villagers also changed. The pit was newly dug, clearly a precaution taken by Gu Qing after beating Ding Erlang the previous day. He had calmly waited at home for the brothers' revenge.
Whether the stakes would pierce their abdomens or just their feet depended entirely on the brothers' luck.
When had the Gu family's child become so ruthless? What had happened to the harmless, obedient child they once knew?
After a long while, the rickety door of the thatched cottage was gently opened, and a young man in a hemp shirt and bare feet stepped out, holding a thick wooden stick. He approached the brothers and sneered.
"Using your own words, if I don't cripple you today, how can I stand in Shiqiao Village?"
With that, the young man swung the wooden stick with a whistling sound, striking Ding Dalang. A non-human scream followed, and Ding Dalang's arm hung limply, clearly broken.
The young man raised the stick again, and Ding Erlang, terrified, screamed, "We're crippled! We're already crippled! Gu Qing, spare us this time, we'll never dare to provoke you again!"
Ding Dalang, clutching his broken arm, his face ashen, said nothing, his eyes filled with hatred.
The young man thought for a moment, then slowly put down the stick and smiled at Ding Erlang, his white teeth gleaming in the sunlight.
"Showing sincerity in begging for mercy, Ding Erlang, how did you beg for mercy yesterday? Give your brother a hint."
Under the locust tree, the peddler and the villagers straightened up. Villager A said excitedly, "Here it comes! He's going to make them say those two words again. Watch closely, it's a lesson!"
After a long silence, a heart-wrenching shout echoed through Shiqiao Village, each word filled with the pain of humiliation and survival.
