For The Barrel Update is Late, Garzey’s Wing Book 1

I mentioned this on twitter, but I don’t have a For The Barrel update today. Last month was spent finishing and finalizing the commissioned project I had, and I’m just getting around to working on FTB now. It will either be a double update come January 1st, or I might just release a late update between now and the regularly scheduled one, it just depends how quickly I finish.

The secret project I’ve been doing is released now as a single volume! It is…1995’s Garzey’s Wing (1 of 5)! The basis for the much maligned Tomino OVA series is surprisingly different compared to what made it into animation, with a much more relaxed pacing and layers of added detail that the anime never approaches. On top of that, many events are significantly changed as well, or entirely original to the books. This wouldn’t have been possible without @PracticalMecha on Twitter approaching me with the idea of a commission, so make sure you thank/blame him. You can also follow the project at @BostonWellStory for more. He’s given me permission to post the book on this website as well, but for now I’ll let everyone who wants to read it use the link above.

There were a lot of personal milestones for me in this project. First off, it’s the first time I’ve made any money doing Japanese translation, which is kind of the destination I’m trying to work towards. As a result of the former, I did this at the fastest pace I’ve reached so far. Which still isn’t what I would consider to be a professional speed, but I like to think that I’m at least getting closer.

This is also the first time I’ve looked closely at Tomino Yoshiyuki’s writing style, and while I’ve often heard it said, it truly is rather…peculiar. I already have to deal with crushing imposter syndrome, and his many idiosyncrasies didn’t make it any easier. There were some real tough moments over the course of these few months, mentally speaking. I tried to maintain some of what I saw as the quirks in his prose while generally smoothing out the experience. This might make for somewhat bumpy reading but this was an instance where I felt pretty strongly about retaining the author’s voice.

Anyway, I’m going back to work on For The Barrel now. There will be more Garzey, so I hope people enjoy reading it. I did.
