This time Qin Shaou was really angry; the landlord had gone too far, it was almost as if he was asking for a beating!
However, he glanced back and saw Albaek with his briefcase, and a sudden idea came to him: he thought of a common plot in American TV shows and Hollywood blockbusters, where lawyers handle problems.
So, Qin Shaou wasn't angry anymore. He found Albaek, explained the landlord's misdeeds in a few words, and then said, "Mr. Lawyer, the rest is up to you. Teach this thug a lesson about the power of the law."
Albaek smiled slightly after listening. He took out his phone and snapped a few photos of the luggage outside the door and the locked door.
Qin Shaou found the previous rental contract, and Albaek looked it over. He then stepped forward and said to the landlord, "Hello, sir, I am Mr. Qin Shaou's lawyer. I believe your actions have infringed upon my client's rights. I am now filing a lawsuit against you. We will see each other in court."
The landlord hadn't thought much of it when he saw Qin Shaou, Albaek, and Li Xin standing together, as they were in the hallway, and he assumed they were just passing by.
Now, as Albaek spoke to him in English, although he didn't understand it, he realized the situation was dire.
The landlord didn't understand, but someone did. Li Xin stepped forward, showing his judge's badge and introducing himself, "I am Judge Li Xin from the Intermediate People's Court. This Canadian gentleman is a lawyer who is now suing you for violating the rental agreement and infringing upon his client's rights."
Upon hearing this, the landlord was terrified. He didn't think Li Xin and Albaek were bluffing. Ignoring the judge's badge with the large red national emblem, just looking at Li Xin's appearance—his meticulously styled hair, his neatly pressed suit, and the briefcase in his hand—made it clear he was a high-level executive, someone the landlord couldn't afford to offend.
Seeing the landlord's stunned expression, Qin Shaou felt as refreshed as if he had drunk iced plum juice on a hot summer day, a pleasure that reached deep into his soul.
Albaek then took out a small book, his lawyer's license, showed it to the landlord, and turned to leave. Li Xin followed, leaving one last sentence, "Sir, please wait for the court's summons."
The landlord was truly terrified now. He rushed forward to grab Albaek, who frowned, causing the landlord to shiver and quickly let go. With a mournful face, he pleaded, "No, no, don't sue me. This is a misunderstanding! It's a misunderstanding!"
Qin Shaou crossed his arms and watched coldly. He hadn't said a word, but he felt extremely satisfied. The life of a rich person was good; many things didn't need to be handled personally, as subordinates could take care of them.
The landlord was frightened by the foreign lawyer Albaek and Li Xin's judge's badge. To avoid being sued, after Li Xin explained the relationship between Albaek and Qin Shaou, the landlord hurriedly approached Qin Shaou with a smile, "Little Qin, don't, don't do this. Give me, a fool, a chance. You are a magnanimous person, don't take it to heart. Talk to your lawyer, this is a small matter, let's settle it privately, no need to go to court, no need to go to court!"
Qin Shaou looked at the laptop on the ground and asked, "How do we settle it privately?"
The landlord gritted his teeth and said, "I'll refund your deposit, how about that..."
Qin Shaou looked at the laptop on the ground and sneered.
The landlord's face twisted into a painful smile, "And, and I'll give you five thousand more. You can buy a new computer!"
Qin Shaou was not a righteous person; he wouldn't refuse this money. After the landlord paid, he didn't make things difficult for him and had Albaek delete the photos on his phone.
At noon, he used the money to treat Li Xin and Albaek to a meal. Then, Qin Shaou packed his things and took a bus back to his hometown in the countryside to prepare for his trip to Canada.
This time, he needed to prepare a lot of documents to claim the inheritance in Canada, including a certificate proving his direct lineage to his second grandfather, Qin Hongde. This required stamps from the village all the way to the provincial capital, as well as a passport.
When his parents learned that their son was suddenly returning home and planning to go abroad, they were shocked. Fortunately, Qin Shaou hadn't mentioned being fired from his company, so he used the excuse of going abroad for training and inspection.
It took four days for Qin Shaou to complete all the procedures Albaek required. Then, he traveled to the capital with him to prepare for the flight to Canada to start his new life as a wealthy young man.
At the Nanjing South Station, as soon as Qin Shaou stepped out, he saw a young man with thick eyebrows and big eyes holding a large sign at the front of the crowd: "Welcome Beast to wreak havoc in Nanjing."
This young man with thick eyebrows and big eyes was Qin Shaou's college roommate, Mao Weilong, who now worked at the Nanjing State Tax Bureau. It was through his connections that Qin Shaou got the job at China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
"Beast" was Qin Shaou's nickname. His name, when read in the local dialect, was fine, but when read quickly in Mandarin, it sounded exactly like "beast," so this nickname had followed him since school.
At the parking lot, Mao Weilong opened a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Qin Shaou kicked the large tire and said, "Not bad, huh?"
Mao Weilong shook his head and sighed, "It's my buddy's. My car is a Changan, and it cost me 48,000 yuan! I had to beg and plead to get this much money from my dad. At first, I said I wanted to buy a Chevrolet Camaro, and my dad brought back a real bumblebee from the insect research institute that night! A real, flying bumblebee!"
At the hotel, after putting down their luggage, Mao Weilong said, "We have many classmates in Nanjing. How about we gather?"
The schedule was tight, and the flight was that evening, so there wasn't time for a gathering. Qin Shaou had to regretfully decline.
At 11 PM, Mao Weilong saw them off at the airport, grumbling that the trip to Nanjing was too rushed and uneventful.
However, during this time, Mao Weilong accomplished something important. He had his father's secretary check Albaek's background through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The results left both of them amazed:
Albaek, a well-known Jewish lawyer in Canada, had obtained civil law degrees from Princeton University in the United States and Oxford University in the United Kingdom. He was the second ambassador to China after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and China in 1970. In 1987 and 1989, he served as a legal secretary to the Chief Justice of the Newfoundland Regional Court. He was also a lawyer for the Canadian delegation to the United Nations and worked at the famous FAKEN-MATINEAU (Fasken Martineau) law firm in Canada until his retirement...
With Albaek's identity confirmed, Qin Shaou could now fly to Canada with peace of mind to claim his inheritance.
This was Qin Shaou's first time flying. Albaek had bought the tickets for the flight from Beijing to Toronto, with a stopover in St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, for 10,000 yuan!
The night was dark, and the weather in Nanjing was notoriously bad. The sky was overcast, and not a single star was visible. On the way, Qin Shaou thought it might rain, but Mao Weilong told him that this was the normal sky in Nanjing.
At the airport, powerful iodine tungsten lamps illuminated the area, with planes constantly taking off and landing. The tarmac was filled with large aircraft, some painted with beautiful orange cloud patterns.
