Erlan (Erlan)

Erlan are not born; they are created. Human applicants will be screened by the Erlan Council. They will then undergo a series of psychic rituals in several secret Erlan territories, after which they will abandon their human bodies and become new, psychically vibrant beings. Therefore, Erlan are not created biologically but through a ritual known only to the Erlan. Even so, their "children" are often fully developed adults. Non-human beings have never been created, perhaps because the ritual only works on humans.

When those who are still human wish to seek the way to become Erlan, they must submit a request to existing Erlan for permission to undergo the ritual. The Erlan are very secretive about this, and they do not publicly announce their territories or the places of creation. The Erlan select ambitious individuals and turn away those they deem unsuitable to become Erlan. Newborn Erlan retain their human memories and personalities but lose all previous class levels, skills, and other characteristics; a newborn Erlan is a 1st-level character who can freely start anew with their new race.

Erlan are as adaptable and ambitious as humans. Due to their eternal lifespan, which can sometimes lead to extremely negative associations—especially regarding their origins—Erlan exhibit a justified resistance. In other aspects, Erlan display a variety of personalities.

Physical Description

Standing less than 6 feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds, males are typically taller and heavier than females. Because the council that selects Erlan candidates has its own preferences for appearance, each "generation" has a similar and distinctive physical structure. The current council prefers candidates with pale skin, red hair, and a youthful appearance. However, Erlan are as varied in appearance as humans. Erlan follow the typical customs of the place they live (to blend in with humans), including special hairstyles, unusual clothing, tattoos, body piercings, or similar things.

Erlan have an effectively unlimited lifespan. As long as their psychic powers are not destroyed, they can sustain Erlan vitality and repair their bodies in ways that are hard to imagine, lasting for a thousand years or more.

Unlike members of other races, Erlan do not need sleep. Instead, Erlan need to meditate for four hours daily. The rest an Erlan gets this way is equivalent to eight hours of human sleep. In this meditative state, Erlan fill their bodies with psychic energy, heal injuries sustained during the day, replenish energy, and restore tissue vitality.

Relationships

Erlan mix with other races, especially humans. Perhaps because the changing relationships could reveal the true nature of the Erlan, the most important principle for their survival is secrecy.

Alignment

Erlan do not tend toward any particular alignment, not even neutrality. Erlan are a mixed bag, ranging from the best to the worst.

Erlan Lands

Wherever there are humans, there are Erlan.

Religion

Erlan rarely worship deities more than other races, as they believe that any blessings or continued existence they desire depend on their own efforts and mastery of their innate psychic powers.

Language

Erlan speak Common. They often learn other languages, including obscure ones. They also enjoy mixing words borrowed from other languages in their conversations: orcish curses, halfling cooking terms, elven musical expressions, and dwarven military phrases.

Names

Erlan names are numerous, often derived from their human names before they transformed into their new existence. This is often true when an Erlan wants to reclaim the past life they left behind. Others, given a second chance to start a new life, often choose new names.

For Erlan, titles used only among themselves are important. Newly transformed Erlan have the title "Newmade"; those who have lived for at least several decades after transformation have the title "Made"; those who have lived for over a century have the title "Eternal." Those who belong to the council that selects new Erlan have the title "Culler."

Adventures

Erlan adventurers are as bold and ambitious as humans. Because some effects that harm humans do not affect Erlan, they appear extraordinarily brave to those who do not know their true nature.
