Chapter 7: A Narrow Encounter
The duo had been tailing Su Jing and Xu Jianfeng all night, until they returned to the hotel at three in the morning. After confirming they had returned to room 0803, the two were already yawning, and could only rely on coffee to stay awake.
"Qingdong, we've been following them all night. We've basically confirmed their schedule, but we don't know if they'll... tomorrow..."
The man named Li Qingdong, clearly unhappy about being woken up at three in the morning, mumbled a couple of responses on the phone, and finally hung up with "If it's something huge, we'll talk about it tomorrow morning."
The duo looked at each other, and had no choice but to leave the hotel to find a cheap motel to sleep. Their budget was limited, and they couldn't afford a high-end hotel...
Su Jing had gotten used to a nocturnal lifestyle over the past few days, becoming like a vampire, ghost, or gargoyle from legend. However, he didn't mind this schedule; in fact, he was naturally drawn to the night.
In the past, before he went to university, Su Jing often went out after eleven at night. He enjoyed the quiet streets at midnight, the feeling of the world being empty, and the freedom of strolling under the stars, as if the entire world belonged to him.
When they went out at night, the free shuttle bus to the casino suddenly stalled and wouldn't start. Su Jing and Xu Jianfeng waited in the bus for fifteen minutes, but it still wouldn't start. Impatient, they got out and hailed a taxi on the street.
A few taxis were lined up at the hotel entrance, and Su Jing and Xu Jianfeng casually got into the first one, with Su Jing in the back and Xu Jianfeng in the front.
"Wait, why do I always have to sit in the paying seat?" Xu Jianfeng suddenly turned and asked.
"Front seat has a better view and fresher air. What's your problem?" Su Jing put on an innocent but mischievous face. "Why would a successful person like you care about a poor student like me? You have so much money, why not be a good person and pay the fare?"
"Damn..."
The taxi drove for two minutes, and Xu Jianfeng suddenly asked, "Driver, where are you taking us?"
"To Babylon," the driver replied without turning his head.
"..." Xu Jianfeng frowned but didn't say anything.
His phone suddenly buzzed, and Xu Jianfeng discreetly took it out to see a message from Su Jing in the back seat:
[The driver has a kitchen knife in his left hand, and there are two iron pipes wrapped in cloth in the toolbox.]
Xu Jianfeng's face turned grim as he glanced at the rearview mirror, noticing the driver was nervously watching him through it. When the driver saw Xu Jianfeng looking, he quickly looked away.
"Driver, where are you from? Your accent doesn't sound like you're from Macau," Xu Jianfeng suddenly spoke up.
"Oh? Ha, I'm from out of town. I've only been driving here for a few months."
"Where are you from? Your accent sounds familiar. Could we be from the same hometown?"
"Ah? Really? I'm from Liaocheng, Shandong."
"Oh... Maybe I heard wrong."
Su Jing sent out a demon-hunting bug to check the back of the car and found two vehicles with obscured license plates closely following them. His heart sank, and he continued to send messages to Xu Jianfeng.
[Two cars are following us.]
Xu Jianfeng read the message, put his phone back in his pocket, and then suddenly grabbed the steering wheel and sharply turned the car to the side. The sudden centrifugal force slammed Su Jing, who was unprepared, into the window.
"Get out!!" Xu Jianfeng grabbed the driver's wrist as he was about to draw a knife and choked him by the neck.
Su Jing quickly opened the door and jumped out, rolling on the ground and then getting up.
Looking up, they found themselves on a coastal road, with few people around. Su Jing knew they had fallen into a trap.
The taxi turned and crashed into the guardrail by the sea. A muffled groan came from the car, and then Xu Jianfeng dragged the driver out by the collar.
The two unlicensed cars following them braked hard, and four burly men with iron pipes and short knives jumped out, surrounding the taxi.
"Xu the Madman, you can't run!"
"Attack together, take them both down!"
"Take one more step, and I'll break his neck! Don't think I won't do it!!"
The four men were hesitant, but Xu Jianfeng had the driver by the neck, and they didn't dare to move. The situation was at a standstill for a moment. Xu Jianfeng motioned for Su Jing to come over. When Su Jing reached him, Xu Jianfeng whispered, "When I move, you get in the car. Got it?"
Su Jing nodded silently.
Xu Jianfeng shielded Su Jing with his body and raised his voice:
"Li Qingdong! Don't think I didn't recognize you! What did Wang Hong offer you to come after me?"
"What did he offer?" The leader seemed to find it funny. "You traitor..."
Before Li Qingdong could finish, Xu Jianfeng lifted the unconscious driver and threw him over the guardrail into the sea!
At the same time, Su Jing dove into the front seat of the taxi, and as soon as he was seated, Xu Jianfeng rushed in from the left, not even closing the door, and immediately reversed, ramming into the four men.
Caught off guard, the four men scattered. Only Li Qingdong reacted quickly, shouting, "Get in the car! Chase them! They're trying to run! Don't let them get away!"
Xu Jianfeng turned the steering wheel, floored the gas, and crashed through one of the unlicensed cars, speeding down the road, breaking through the blockade.
"Damn... Blackie was thrown into the sea! What do we do? Brother Li, we can't leave Blackie here..."
"Why don't you go eat shit! Xu the Madman is trying to split us up!" Li Qingdong slapped one of them. "Forget about him! Chase Xu Jianfeng! We'll come back for Blackie after we catch him! He won't die!"
The four men rushed into their cars and pursued Xu Jianfeng at full speed.
"We finally escaped..." Su Jing used the demon-hunting bug to observe the cars behind them. "Once we get back to the city and hide in a crowded area, they won't be able to do anything to us..."
"Li Qingdong isn't that simple." Xu Jianfeng kept his eyes on the road. "He planned to lead us to this road... There are few people here, making it easier to attack. And the car doesn't have enough fuel, so even if we take it, we won't get far... I was careless... There's an abandoned factory up ahead. We'll get off there."
The taxi screeched to a stop, and the two quickly jumped out. Su Jing took two iron pipes from the toolbox and gave one to Xu Jianfeng.
Su Jing didn't expect to find an old, dilapidated factory in the outskirts of Macau. In this land of high value, it was surprising that it hadn't been demolished. The gate was broken, and only bored children would go inside. The two didn't need to climb the wall and simply slipped in with their iron pipes.
"Chase! They went into the factory!!"
The two cars following them were about three to four hundred meters behind, and the four men in the cars were already seething with anger. Their well-planned operation had gone awry, and they had lost one of their men. Fortunately, they were well-prepared with high-powered flashlights. Each man had a flashlight and followed the two into the abandoned factory.
"Damn... It's too dark, I can't see anything!"
Moving from a bright area to the darkness, Xu Jianfeng felt like he was blind. Fortunately, Su Jing seemed to be able to see in the dark and pulled him into a corner of the factory.
"They split into two groups, one blocking the door, the other searching for us." Su Jing observed for a moment and whispered, "If we wait for them to go deeper, I can find a way to get us out. Their cars are still running, so if we can get to them first, we can drive back to the city..."
"No. We won't run. We'll stay here and take them all out." Xu Jianfeng's eyes glowed in the darkness. "These people have been after us for a long time. Running won't solve anything. Instead of living in fear, we'll end this here and now."
Su Jing was silent. The violent leader who had been joking around for the past two days finally showed his ruthless side. No wonder he was called Xu the Madman.
"Two of us, four of them. How do we take them out?"
"You can see in the dark, right?"
The two looked at each other in the darkness.
Li Qingdong held a flashlight, scanning the area warily. He felt something was off. It was too quiet, and there was no sound except for his and Wei Laosan's footsteps.
"Boss Li... We're only two, aren't we a bit short-handed..."
"Shut up." Li Qingdong snapped. "Someone has to guard the door. With me here, do you think Xu Jianfeng can eat you?"
"Uh..." Wei Laosan tightened his grip on the short knife.
Suddenly, a gust of wind brought a half-brick that hit Wei Laosan on the head. He groaned in pain and crouched down. Li Qingdong realized something was wrong. The factory was full of potential weapons. With the flashlight, he was a sitting duck!
He quickly threw the flashlight and rolled to a corner. As soon as he moved, a piece of rebar landed where he had been standing. It must have been thrown from above. Next, the sound of a metal pipe hitting flesh came from Wei Laosan's direction, and the flashlight's light flickered. Wei Laosan fell silent.
Li Qingdong quickly assessed the situation based on the terrain he had memorized. He carefully moved to a side, planning to flank and attack.
As he moved, he suddenly sensed someone's breathing nearby. He turned to look, but a strong arm locked around his neck, and a rusty, sharp steel blade was pressed against his throat.
"Cough... Mis... misunderstanding... Brother Xu... I..."
His plea for mercy was cut short by a cold snort. The steel blade mercilessly pierced his neck, severing his trachea, and then sliced horizontally, cutting his artery.
"Gurgle... G..."
Li Qingdong fell to his knees and then collapsed, never understanding how Xu Jianfeng saw his position.
