Chapter 54

"Me? No, no, no, I'll go find a female train attendant to help!" When Xiao Yuanhang saw the female doctor asking him to go in and help, he was taken aback. After regaining his composure, he thought of finding a female train attendant to assist, as it was inappropriate for him, a man, to enter the delivery room.

The doctor said sternly, "A woman won't do; she won't have the strength. Can't you see how exhausted I am? It's you who has to do it. This is no time for hesitation. Saving a life is the priority. Come in quickly!"

Xiao Yuanhang, being a decisive person, did not hesitate further. He walked into the compartment and pulled the door shut behind him. The scene inside the compartment made even Xiao Yuanhang, who had lived two lives, feel a bit uneasy. The pregnant woman was drenched in sweat, her hair matted to her face, and she was biting a towel, moaning. Her husband was leaning over the table, holding her hands tightly, constantly comforting her. Due to the narrowness of the berth, one of her legs was propped up on the berth, while the other dangled on the ground. A lot of blood had already flowed from her lower body, staining the white sheets red, a sight that was quite shocking!

The female doctor said to Xiao Yuanhang, "Chief, the mother's water has broken, and she's about to give birth. However, the baby is in a breech position and can't be born. The current situation is that the baby's buttocks are facing down. We need to adjust the position so that the baby's head is facing down. There are no facilities on the train, so we can only do it manually. I've been pushing for over ten minutes, but I'm completely exhausted. We need to adjust the position quickly, or the mother will suffer severe bleeding, and it will be too late!"

Xiao Yuanhang immediately said, "I understand. Tell me what to do!"

"Come over and watch how I do it!" The female doctor placed her hands on the pregnant woman's swollen belly and said, "My right hand is on the baby's head, and my left hand is on the baby's buttocks. Push down with your right hand and pull up with your left. Keep pushing and pulling, and the position will be adjusted. I've already adjusted it halfway. Now, you come over and continue as I said, don't stop!"

Xiao Yuanhang nodded to show he understood and stepped forward to mimic her actions...

"Move your hand a bit lower, yes, yes, yes! That's it, use your strength!" The female doctor watched Xiao Yuanhang and continuously guided him.

Xiao Yuanhang, being young and regularly exercising, had strong hands. After less than five minutes of pushing, he felt the baby's position in the mother's belly gradually shifting. He didn't even wipe the sweat from his face and continued pushing and pulling under the doctor's guidance.

After about five more minutes, Xiao Yuanhang felt his arms becoming sore and his strength waning. His uniform was drenched in sweat, but he didn't dare stop. Time was of the essence!

"Stop!" The female doctor waved to stop Xiao Yuanhang. She checked the baby's position and said, "The position has been adjusted. It's almost time for the baby to be born!" Then she looked at the pregnant woman and said, "Now, start using the method I taught you to push!"

The pregnant woman, with tears and sweat mingling on her face, nodded forcefully and began to push...

Seeing the position adjusted, Xiao Yuanhang finally breathed a sigh of relief. He stood up to leave, but the female doctor called him back, saying, "You can't leave yet. Help support her leg." She pointed to the leg dangling on the ground.

With no other choice, Xiao Yuanhang stepped forward to support the pregnant woman's leg. Under the doctor's guidance, he helped position her for delivery and then coached her to keep pushing...

"It's coming out!" After continuous effort, the baby's head finally emerged. The female doctor couldn't help but exclaim in surprise, "Quick, quick, push harder, the head is out!"

Xiao Yuanhang's heart raced as he watched. To be honest, he had never seen a woman give birth in person. When his wife gave birth in his previous life, he was away on a business trip. By the time he returned, his son was already able to nurse. They say giving birth is like going through a major ordeal, and he hadn't experienced it in his previous life. This time, he deeply felt the hellish ordeal!

Perhaps because the pregnant woman often did hard labor, the birth went smoothly. In less than ten minutes, the female doctor had the baby in her hands. She held the baby by the feet, turned it upside down, and patted its bottom, and the baby let out a loud cry!

The exhausted pregnant woman, hearing her baby's cry, smiled with the joy of becoming a mother, her face covered in sweat and tears. The father buried his head in his wife's face and sobbed loudly...

The female doctor cut the umbilical cord and tied it off. Xiao Yuanhang quickly took out the warm water he had prepared and placed it on the adjacent berth. The female doctor carried the baby over to start cleaning it. Xiao Yuanhang checked his watch; they were about ten minutes away from Lintai Station. He said to the female doctor, "We're about to arrive at Lintai Station. I've already called for an ambulance. When we get there, the mother needs to be taken to the hospital for treatment. I'll write a passenger record to hand over to the station."

By this time, the husband had hastily dressed the mother. Xiao Yuanhang took out the passenger record and carbon paper from his bag and said, "Your wife gave birth safely, but there are no professional doctors on the train, and her condition can't be checked. It's not suitable for her to continue the journey. I plan to have you both get off at the next station for a hospital check-up. I've already arranged for an ambulance. Now, I need to write a passenger record to hand over to the station. Please tell me your names, ages, and home addresses, and give me your tickets."

The man's name was Shi Dazhu, and the woman's name was Zhao Erni. They were a couple from Shandong who had come to work here. Xiao Yuanhang quickly wrote the passenger record and took their tickets. At this moment, Shi Dazhu suddenly realized he didn't know if it was a boy or a girl and asked the female doctor, "Doctor, is it a boy or a girl?"

The female doctor smiled and said, "Congratulations, it's a boy!"

"Ah!" Shi Dazhu was overjoyed and moved to pick up his son. His wife, Zhao Erni, was also delighted and said weakly, "Dazhu, quickly bring the son over for me to see."

The female doctor handed the baby to Zhao Erni for a moment and then said, "Do you have a small blanket or a small quilt for the baby? You need to wrap the baby up, or it will catch a cold!"

"We have, we have!" Shi Dazhu nodded quickly and took out a large bag from the opposite berth, from which he pulled out a small blanket and a small quilt. The female doctor wrapped the baby and then handed it to them. The couple, holding their son who had endured so much, smiled with happiness!

The female doctor, seeing this, wiped her hands and took out a camera from her bag on the upper berth. She took several photos of the happy couple and then had Xiao Yuanhang stand with them for a few more.

In an era when 120 cameras were still in use, a 135 camera was considered a luxury. The female doctor had a 135 camera with a telephoto lens. Xiao Yuanhang knew this woman was not ordinary and smiled, saying, "Doctor, you've helped so much, and I still don't know your name or where you work. We'd like to express our gratitude!"

The female doctor smiled and said, "There's no need for thanks. Anyone would have helped in this situation. My name is Tang, Tang Wanjun. I was a barefoot doctor during the Cultural Revolution, and now I'm a journalist."

"Right, give me your names and addresses. I'll send you the photos once they're developed." Tang Wanjun didn't introduce herself further but asked for Xiao Yuanhang and Shi Dazhu's names and addresses.
