Chapter 39 – Miss Liu (1)
Miss Liu’s first name was Yunmeng. Just like Sheng Peiyin, she was also well-known in the Capital, she was rather low-key in displaying her talents that gave out a kind of quiet breathtaking beauty, unlike Sheng Peiyin who frequently appeared in the public eyes
Shen Ziqiao liked this type of woman.
“I am so happy when I heard that you are here. Come inside.” Liu Yunmeng personally greeted Sheng Peiyin at the courtyard door. She had never seen Shen Ziqiao before thus she did not know how to address her.
Sheng Peiyin wrapped her hand onto Liu Yunmeng’s arm affectionately, “I am afraid you might be unhappy with this uninvited guest.”
Liu Yunmeng glared and rebuked her, “What nonsense are you saying. I am so happy that you are able to come and keep me company.” Her eyes glanced inquisitively towards the lovely and adorable girl who seemed much younger than Sheng Peiyin.
“This is Shen’s third miss, her pet name is Jiaojiao.” Sheng Peiyin smilingly introduced. “Jiaojiao, this is Miss Liu that you longed to meet.”
When had she ever said she wanted to meet Liu Wanmeng? Shen Ziqiao muttered in her heart, but her small face revealed a lovely and innocent smile, courteously called out, “Miss Liu.”
Liu Yunmeng did know that her sister-in-law was considering her marriage to Shen Xiao as his second wife, thus this abrupt meeting with Shen Ziqiao who might be her future step daughter caused two blushing spots on her fair cheeks and she nodded her head embarrassedly.
Shen Ziqiao took this moment to conscientiously size up Liu Wanmeng.
She was truly a delicate beauty, like the pretty girl next door compared to Sheng Peiyin’s enchanting beauty. She had a pair of phoenix eyes with arched brows, fair and clear lustrous skin, an upturned mouth that looked as if she was always smiling which arouses a familiarity that drew one’s desire to get closer.
“Let’s chat in the room.” As Liu Yunmeng was not a twelve or thirteen years old girl, even though she was still blushing, she had already regained normalcy.
Once they entered the room, teas and pastries were served by the maid servant.
“Jiaojiao, this is your favourite white sugar cake.” Sheng Peiyin pushed the plate of pastries on the table towards Shen Ziqiao. “Sister Yunmeng, you like white sugar cake too?”
Liu Yunmeng responded with a smile, “I am not very fond of sweets.”
Shen Ziqiao did not say a word and took a bite of the white sugar cake. She was interested to see how Sheng Peiyin was going to make her loathe Liu Yunmeng and prevent Shen Xiao from marrying Liu Yunmeng.
Sheng Peiyin was most skilled in using Shen Ziqiao as a tool to attack Shen Xiao.
“Jiaojiao, don’t just eat the cake, drink some tea too.” Liu Yunmeng softly said. She did not deliberately fawn over Shen Ziqiao just because Shen Ziqiao might be her future step daughter. It was just a natural instinct to take care of young children like Shen Ziqiao.
Shen Ziqiao took a big mouthful of tea and thanked Liu Yunmeng, grinning broadly.
Sheng Peiyin’s eyes flickered and looked profoundly at Shen Ziqiao, then turned to discuss poems and needleworks with Liu Yunmeng.
Shen Ziqiao was not good in any of these topics. She sat there quietly listening to them, without butting in or interrupting their conversations, absolutely the image of a poster child.
When has Shen Ziqiao ever been so quiet before? Sheng Peiyin found out that she could not understand this good-for-nothing anymore.
Liu Yunmeng naturally was not the kind that would neglect the guest. She turned towards Shen Ziqiao, “Jiaojiao, I have made some dried prunes and honeyed sour plum. Would you like to try?”
Shen Ziqiao nodded her head, “Okay.”
Liu Yunmeng sent someone to fetch the dried pruned and honeyed sour plum that she had personally made herself.
“How’s the taste?” With a smile, Liu Yunmeng looked at Shen Ziqiao nipping a piece of the sour plum into her mouth, her eyes and nose crinkled together.
