Chapter 1: The Magical Enchantment
6 min read1,523 words
Inside a three-story house near Ottery St. Catchpole village.
Eleven-year-old Kyle Chao Ba stood by the window, carefully examining the parchment in his hand.
Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore (Order of Merlin, First Class, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards)
Dear Mr. Chao Ba,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Enclosed is a list of all necessary books and equipment.
The school year begins on September 1st. We await your owl by July 31st.
Deputy Headmistress: Minerva McGonagall
...
Yes, it was the acceptance letter from Hogwarts.
Since he had been transported to this world eleven years ago, Kyle had been waiting for this day.
As for why he was so certain, it was simple: a few special families lived nearby.
Among them, the most familiar to Kyle were the editor of the Quibbler, Xenophilius Lovegood, and the Weasley family.
Especially the latter, with their bizarre architecture and the family's red hair, Kyle instantly confirmed the nature of this world.
It's worth noting that being able to live here also indicated that Kyle, in this life, came from a wizarding family.
His father, Chris Chao Ba, worked at the Ministry of Magic, serving as the Deputy Head of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and the Head of the Beast Division. Thanks to his inherited ability to communicate with magical creatures, he was also a renowned magical zoologist and one of the few students of Newt Scamander.
Kyle's mother, Diana, also worked at the Ministry of Magic, in the Department of Mysteries. However, Kyle did not know what she specifically did. He had tried to find out through various means, but all attempts failed. Clearly, his parents were very good at keeping secrets and had not revealed even a hint of information.
Family background... well, since no prominent figures had emerged from their lineage, it could be described as ordinary. Compared to famous names like Dumbledore and Grindelwald, they were far behind.
However, Kyle was already very satisfied. At least his parents were wizards, and attending Hogwarts was a certainty.
Unless he was a Squib.
This possibility was ruled out after his first magical outburst at the age of three.
Although he had always known this day would come, when the owl really brought the letter and pecked open his window, Kyle was so excited that he almost jumped up.
He cherished the parchment, holding it even while sleeping, and would glance at it every now and then.
...
"Dear, you've been reading that acceptance letter for three days. Can you put it down? I promise it's real!"
Chris looked at his son, who was grinning foolishly, and reminded him, "Don't forget we have plans to go to Diagon Alley with the Weasleys today. Don't keep them waiting."
"Okay, Dad, I'm coming."
Kyle quickly put away the acceptance letter he had read countless times, stood up, and tapped a wooden post beside him: "Groot, I'm leaving."
As soon as he spoke, a small green creature jumped out and waved at Kyle.
The Chao Ba family had magical creatures, but not many. Besides Groot, the bowtruckle, they also had a kneazle named Tom.
Although Chris, as the Deputy Head of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, could easily keep dozens of magical creatures, he did not do so. Even Groot and Tom were only kept because they refused to leave.
It wasn't that Chris disliked magical creatures; rather, he believed that magical creatures should not be kept by wizards.
Those kept by wizards could only be called pets.
On this point, the middle-aged gentleman, known for his gentle demeanor and somewhat of a pushover at the Ministry, was very firm.
His view was supported by Newt Scamander.
Newt also believed that magical creatures should be in nature and had always acted on this belief.
As for why his magical suitcase contained so many magical creatures, it was purely due to Newt's unique constitution.
Kyle had met this old man more than once, so he was certain.
Just like a certain magical Grim Reaper elementary school student, Newt Scamander had a similar constitution.
Kyle clearly remembered that when he was five, he saw a Niffler dive straight into Newt's arms while they were walking in the garden.
Nifflers are naturally masters of Apparition. Although they are not very intelligent and do not deliberately hide like other magical creatures, they have a strong territorial sense and a keen sense of danger.
Once they sense a wizard or any other threat approaching, they immediately disappear.
The first sentence in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" about Nifflers states that they can only be observed from a distance and cannot be approached.
Yet, this Niffler dove straight into Newt's arms without hesitation.
It was simply outrageous.
When he was seven, he and Newt encountered a Fire Crab.
At eight, an injured unicorn.
At ten, a Fire Crab that almost became a cauldron.
...
These magical creatures, some of which had escaped after being smuggled into the British wizarding world, and others that had wandered over, always managed to appear around Newt in various bizarre ways.
And this was while Newt was mostly at home.
When he was traveling the world to return magical creatures to their homes, the situation was even more severe.
For every magical creature he returned, dozens more would appear. Over time, his suitcase naturally filled up with animals.
...
With such a special ability, it's no wonder Newt was on the blacklist of almost every magical government.
After all, these magical creatures were not particularly friendly before meeting Newt, especially the injured and pregnant ones, which would explode at the slightest provocation.
Imagine you're leisurely drinking afternoon tea on the street, and suddenly a rampaging sphinx or a venomous leopard jumps out... The scene alone is enough to make anyone break out in a cold sweat.
So, what about Gellert and Voldemort? A Dark Lord causing destruction by his own hand? That's weak.
Look at Newt. He doesn't need to lift a finger to make things disappear. He just buys a plane ticket, stays for a few days, drinks coffee, and enjoys the scenery. And afterward, he doesn't even have to deal with the consequences.
It's no wonder Tina is great. She single-handedly sealed Newt in her life, and it's no exaggeration to say the world owes her a First-Class Order of Merlin.
Unfortunately, the British wizarding world suffered.
According to incomplete statistics, since Newt settled in Dorset, the number of incidents involving magical creatures at the Ministry has increased exponentially. The British wizarding world has become the top destination for smugglers, without a doubt.
Fortunately, although incidents have been frequent over the years, none have caused serious damage, with the worst being minor injuries to some unfortunate individuals.
Perhaps as Newt's birthplace, the area has a passive buff.
However, Chris wasn't so lucky. Due to his position, he often had to work overtime for several days at a time.
But from the look of it, Kyle suspected he enjoyed it.
...
As he walked to the door, Kyle noticed that besides Chris, his mother Diana had also returned early from the Ministry, standing there with a gentle smile.
Her black hair was meticulously styled, and her black robe with white trim suited her well, exuding elegance and sophistication. Her light blue eyes were filled with warmth when she looked at Kyle.
Elegant and intellectual.
This was Kyle's impression of Diana.
Instinctively, Kyle turned to look at Chris... Well, he was a bit handsome, and you could still see some of his youthful charm. The two of them were quite a match.
Most importantly, Chris wasn't bald. Even at nearly forty, his hairline was only about an inch above his eyebrows, a stark contrast to Mr. Weasley next door.
Of course, with such strong genes, Kyle's appearance was naturally good. Among the people he knew, he could easily rank first, showing a tendency to be a heartthrob even at a young age.
Of course, this wasn't important to Kyle. He didn't care about his looks; he wasn't living off his face.
"Sorry, I'm late."
Kyle walked between the two, saying apologetically.
"If you had put away that letter, you probably wouldn't have been late. Hogwarts isn't going to leave Britain just because you didn't take care of the letter."
Chris teased Kyle, telling a joke on the spot.
Well, it was a joke, at least Chris laughed heartily after saying it.
As for Kyle, although he didn't understand what Chris was laughing about, he politely smiled to give his father some face.
Fortunately, the awkward moment didn't last long.
"Alright, it's getting late. We need to leave."
Diana smiled, breaking the awkward interaction and taking Kyle's hand. "We need to buy a lot for your school, and it's impolite to keep the Weasleys waiting."
With that, accompanied by a loud crack, she disappeared with Kyle.
Seeing this, Chris quickly Apparated after them.
