After changing vehicles several times and arriving at three different locations, Su Bai finally reached the dormitory area of his school in the early hours of the morning. The dormitory for his major was in the old building. The gatekeeper was an aunt who had recently gone through a divorce. She didn't keep a close watch on the gate at night, and the door was never locked. After dinner, she would go straight to bed, and students could simply push the door open to enter or exit.
Moreover, there were no cameras here. Since the first murder, Su Bai had developed an instinctive aversion to cameras. He hated anything that could record his movements.
Entering the dormitory building, he turned directly into the public restroom. The door at the far end had been secured with a wire by Su Bai beforehand. He climbed over it, then changed into the clothes he had placed in a basin. The clothes and shoes he had worn earlier were left in the basin. Afterward, Su Bai went to the faucet and took a shower, emerging with his body drenched.
A towel was placed over the basin, covering the clothes and sneakers inside. He was now wearing a tank top and shorts, his muscular build exposed, his hair wet, and his breathing slightly labored.
Pushing open the door to his dormitory, he entered and sat down on the bed at position 1. He deliberately splashed some water on the face of a fair-skinned boy sleeping on the bed. The boy opened his eyes groggily and, after a while, recognized Su Bai.
"Su Bai, did you go to take a shower?"
"Yeah, couldn't sleep, it was too hot, so I took a shower."
After a brief response, Su Bai went to his bed at position 4. The dormitory housed four people, with the odd-numbered beds on the lower level and the even-numbered beds on the upper level.
At his bed, Su Bai hung a dark brown, opaque curtain.
Lying in bed, his mind wasn't focused on the murder he had committed that day, but on the recent "Horror Broadcast" incident. Compared to this, his murder seemed insignificant.
Even from an instinctive perspective, while creating an alibi, Su Bai felt somewhat disinterested. Although Chu Zhao always said that such an alibi seemed overly contrived and that as long as the police didn't suspect him initially, everything would be fine, Su Bai still subconsciously went through the entire process.
Lying in bed, he couldn't sleep, not at all. Normally, after a murder, the brief surge of excitement would be followed by exhaustion, allowing for a good night's sleep. This time, it was completely different.
After lying in bed for half an hour, Su Bai sat up. He had a computer desk on his bed. He unfolded it, turned on his laptop, and entered the hidden documents. There was a hidden folder named "X" containing seven subfolders, each with his murder records, totaling seven targets.
The first to the sixth were either pickpockets or serial criminals. Killing these people required only a suitable location, a suitable opportunity, and a suitable alibi, making it simple and easy.
In fact, while TV shows often portrayed police solving cases, they mostly showed successful investigations, giving the impression that criminals would inevitably be caught. However, there were still many cases that left the police clueless. Su Bai knew this well. As long as the basic elements of anti-detection were mastered, it would be difficult for the police to catch him. Additionally, since his murders were motiveless and without a specific target, the police couldn't trace him through the victims' social relationships, making him even safer.
After all, not every police officer in the real world was a Sherlock Holmes.
The female white-collar worker was a target Su Bai chose who was neither a fugitive nor a pickpocket. This was because his addiction had grown, leading him to choose a target of a different level for the first time.
Su Bai opened the seventh folder, which contained the information about the female white-collar worker. Her name was Liu Shanshan, 28 years old, and she worked as a secretary at a company.
Below were the details Su Bai had gathered about her. This woman had been involved in various illegal fundraising schemes, essentially economic fraud. For example, she had deceived people by claiming that a financial platform from Taiwan or Hong Kong was about to enter the mainland, and that investing money now would yield significant returns. Many people were duped into investing their life savings, only to lose everything in the end, leading to many families being ruined.
However, this woman had somehow managed to avoid prison while others involved in these schemes were incarcerated. She was indeed implicated, as a nanny in Chu Zhao's family had been deceived into investing her life savings. The nanny, driven by greed, had even persuaded her son and daughter-in-law to mortgage their house and invest all their money.
In the end, when the truth came to light, the nanny, unable to bear the shock, committed suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills at Chu Zhao's house. This target was chosen with significant help from Chu Zhao, who, unlike Su Bai, was purely seeking thrills.
As Su Bai continued scrolling through the information, his pupils suddenly constricted. He saw a picture of a group of people holding banners and placards, protesting in front of a government office.
In the picture, an elderly couple held a banner that read: "Unscrupulous developers defraud the people's hard-earned money, please government, uphold justice!"
The elderly couple in the picture was the same one he had seen in the abandoned building, burning the banner with the white-collar worker.
No wonder they had seemed familiar.
Previously, when he was gathering information on the target, he had only focused on the woman's recent activities or the most obvious ones. He had only glanced at the other details and incidents casually, without a thorough examination.
It seemed this woman was also involved in some abandoned construction projects.
The "Horror Broadcast" had said, "Good and evil will ultimately be repaid."
Su Bai suddenly felt a chill run down his back. What exactly was this "Horror Broadcast"? Was it just a supernatural event?
"Buzz..."
His phone vibrated.
Su Bai glanced at the caller ID; it was Chu Zhao.
"Hello, I'm here," Su Bai said.
There was a brief silence on Chu Zhao's end, as if he was organizing his thoughts. Finally, he spoke:
"Su Bai, did you carry out the plan today?" Chu Zhao asked.
Su Bai's heart skipped a beat. Could it be that something had gone wrong, and his identity was about to be exposed?
Chu Zhao came from a family of police officers and was a police officer himself. He always derived a special pleasure from helping Su Bai plan his actions, which made him even more obsessed.
"Did something happen?" Su Bai asked tentatively, pressing the record button on his phone.
"Answer me, damn it, did you carry it out or not!" Chu Zhao almost shouted.
"Is she dead?" Su Bai asked.
"Dead," Chu Zhao took a deep breath, "She died of a sudden heart attack. There were no external wounds on her body. The nightclub owner reported it, and the forensic doctor examined her, concluding that the cause of death was a natural accident, ruling out foul play."
Hearing this, Su Bai subconsciously gripped the knife on his bedside, feeling the coldness of the blade, and his emotions fluctuated even more.
He had clearly stabbed her in the chest with this knife and twisted it... How could it be a sudden heart attack!
"Did you scare her to death before you acted?" Chu Zhao continued, "Ha, this is the perfect alibi, buddy. You've committed the perfect crime."
