Chapter 6

Chu Zhao and Su Bai squatted together in the flower bed beside the teaching building, staring at each other with wide eyes.
"I only asked you this afternoon what you thought about the missing anatomy teacher in the school laboratory, and you actually gave me an answer tonight." Chu Zhao grumbled, as if Su Bai had known all day but only told him at night, forcing him to get out of bed and rush over, filled with a sense of deep resentment.
Su Bai rolled his eyes at Chu Zhao, "Did you see what the scalp looked like?"
"I get dizzy at the sight of blood, and I have a weak stomach, so I didn't look," Chu Zhao replied.
"Can you even be a police officer like this?"
"You know, I got this job through connections," Chu Zhao stood up and stretched.
"That's not the scalp of an anatomy teacher. The anatomy teachers have been soaked in formaldehyde for a long time, and they've been handled by students countless times. How could their scalps still have fresh blood? Moreover, the scalp tissue is very delicate and soft, indicating that the person died not long ago or was carefully preserved for some time."
Chu Zhao stared at Su Bai with a look of disgust, "Damn, you actually looked at it?"
"When the scalp was found, I was at the scene and also considered a witness. Of course, I would take a look before the police arrived."
"Ah, so it's fresh human skin. Does that mean...?" Chu Zhao pulled out a cigarette, preparing to light it, but the wind kept blowing out his lighter.
"Fresh human skin, and no one has reported any intentional injuries. It's almost certain that this is a murder case."
Chu Zhao, frustrated at not being able to light his cigarette, threw it and the lighter on the ground and stomped on them, "Doesn't this mean I won't be going back tonight?"
Su Bai looked at Chu Zhao with an expression that said, "What do you think?" But Chu Zhao was indeed a peculiar police officer; when a murder case occurred, he was more concerned about not being able to sleep well that night.
"Chu Zhao, what are you doing there?" A middle-aged man standing at the entrance of the teaching building shouted over.
"That's my brother-in-law, the captain of the criminal investigation team. Other people's brother-in-laws would be eager to please their younger brothers-in-law, but he just knows how to push me to the limit. Damn."
Chu Zhao put on his police cap, "Come on, follow me."
"Captain Sun, I'm investigating and gathering information. This is Su Bai, also a witness to the discovery of the human skin."
Captain Sun had a square face and spoke clearly, with a short haircut that gave him a very masculine appearance. He glanced at Su Bai and asked, "Have you finished your statement?"
Su Bai nodded, "Yes, I've said everything I needed to."
Hearing this, Captain Sun didn't say anything more and directly told Chu Zhao, "The higher-ups have decided to conduct a thorough search of the entire campus. We don't have enough manpower, so contact the school administration or the student council and get some reliable people to help."
"Understood."
Chu Zhao turned and walked away, and Su Bai followed.
As they walked, Chu Zhao immediately put on a pained expression, "Damn, a thorough search."
"Finding a piece of scalp, not foot skin, definitely requires a thorough search. It's normal."
"Su Bai, if the killer were as straightforward as you, wouldn't that be great? Just kill and be done with it, instead of cutting up the body and leaving pieces everywhere, making me do the cleaning."
"..." Su Bai.
...
The police led the search, and students from the student council were assigned to assist the police. The school turned on all the lights, and the students used flashlights or the flashlight function on their phones to start searching.
About 700 to 800 people were involved in the search, focusing on the area around the teaching building where the scalp was found.
The search results were quickly compiled, much easier than expected.
Human flesh was found in the flower bed, in other classrooms, in the toilets, and even in the gap behind the vending machine. In just an hour, dozens of pieces of scattered human flesh were discovered.
This made everyone search even more enthusiastically!
Indeed, Su Bai noticed that the students around him were searching more diligently, even though they knew what they were looking for. Finding the target items so frequently was a real morale booster for the searchers.
Chu Zhao and Su Bai, however, were constantly slacking off. Chu Zhao, in particular, had a rebellious attitude after being forced into the police force, which had reached a pathological level. His willingness to join the murder club revealed a lot about his mindset. He had a deep aversion to his job and his uniform.
Xun'er had once said that the four people in the club were all crazy, which was indeed very true.
"They're searching for human flesh, parts of a corpse, but it feels like they're playing a treasure hunt game," Chu Zhao said, leaning against a tree.
"That's just how people are," Su Bai looked around and then at Chu Zhao, "Don't move."
"What's wrong?" Chu Zhao was stunned, then followed Su Bai's gaze and looked up. Above the tree he was leaning against, hidden among the branches, was a bird's nest, but something dark and ominous was clearly placed inside.
"Give me a boost, I'll go check it out." Su Bai started running towards Chu Zhao.
Chu Zhao squatted, then placed his hands together. When Su Bai stepped on his hands, Chu Zhao pushed him up, and Su Bai grabbed a branch with one hand and the bird's nest with the other. He felt a cold, damp, and furry object.
The sensation was unpleasant, and a shadow of unease crept over Su Bai, but he was experienced in such matters.
Jumping down from the tree, Su Bai threw the object to Chu Zhao, who held it in his arms and looked at it with a shocked expression.
"Really?"
"Your luck is indeed suited for being a police officer. Even when slacking off, you can find a human head."
Chu Zhao held a bloody human head, with blood oozing from the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose, giving it a terrifying appearance.
But Su Bai had simply thrown the head to Chu Zhao, who didn't lose his composure and continued to joke around, showing that Chu Zhao wasn't as frivolous and incompetent as he often pretended to be.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have joined the club and done those things. Whether he admitted it or not, the blood of a police officer ran through his veins; he just wasn't willing to face it.
Chu Zhao took out his phone and called Captain Sun.
"Hey, brother-in-law."
"It's working hours, don't call me brother-in-law. You should..."
Chu Zhao hung up the call and rolled his eyes at Su Bai, "Do all police officers need to be like this?"
Su Bai took the head and used the flashlight on his phone to examine it carefully.
"It's a woman, probably in her early twenties. If I'm not mistaken, she's a female student from the school."
For now, that was all they could determine. Su Bai wasn't a forensic expert and didn't want to conduct a detailed examination at the moment.
Captain Sun, Chu Zhao's brother-in-law, quickly called back.
"Hello," Chu Zhao answered.
"Are you throwing a tantrum? You..."
"Click..."
Chu Zhao hung up again and squatted next to Su Bai to examine the head.
These two young men, despite being second-generation, were different from those who only raced cars and chased women. Their interests and experiences were far beyond the ordinary, even bordering on the shocking.
"During the initial report, how many pieces of flesh were found?" Su Bai suddenly asked.
Chu Zhao was taken aback, then calculated, "About seventy to eighty pieces. By now, it's probably over a hundred."
"Someone is copying a crime," Su Bai said, pursing his lips, "Do you know which one?"
Chu Zhao looked at Su Bai with an expression that said, "Do you think I'm an idiot?" "Even if I'm a lousy police officer, I still know about that case. You mean the Nanjing University dismemberment case, right?"
Su Bai nodded, "This year marks the 20th anniversary of the statute of limitations for the Nanjing University dismemberment case. The suspect is using a new case to pay homage to it."
