Chapter 46

"Big brother, why do you have such a serious look on your face?"
"Huh? Kail. No, I was just thinking about something."
As I was starting to organize my thoughts about the road, my younger brother Kail spoke to me. He is a boy who recently completed his baptism ceremony.
"Actually, the window glass I made with so much effort doesn't seem to be selling at all."
"Oh, that transparent and beautiful stuff? Mom said it's piling up in the warehouse and getting in the way."
That's right.
I had a brilliant idea for a new product, window glass, when I went to the city before. I thought it would definitely sell, but it didn't at all. The buildings I saw in the city were all brick structures with no windows. They felt so closed off, almost like prisons. Therefore, I thought that if there were more open houses with window glass, more people would be happy.
However, it didn't sell at all in reality.
The reason is simple.
The residents probably don't feel dissatisfied with the current situation. No matter how much I say, "This is a good thing," people won't try something they've never seen before.
There's something I've come to realize since being born in this world: good things don't necessarily sell. What sells as a product is something that people want, and convenient things don't always sell. I remember hearing that in economically underdeveloped countries or regions in my previous life, only simple and durable products sold, and even Japanese products struggled in some places.
In this area, where bartering is common, people won't spend money on things they don't need.
"Is there anything that might sell?"
"Something that might sell? If I were you, I'd want that."
"Huh? Kail, is there something you want?"
"Yeah. I always think the beautiful furniture in your new house is so nice when I look at it."
Furniture...
I remember when I used magic to recreate the inn, there was nothing, so I prepared things like the entrance door. I had tables, chairs, and shelves made as needed. I also got a new bed, which has a nice wood smell and I really like it.
"By the way, I don't think the loggers sell much furniture. Why is that?"
"Maybe because it's heavy to transport?"
"......That makes sense. It could be."
I remember Mr. Maddock saying that the wood cut by loggers is mostly sold as firewood. There are several reasons for this. One is that there is a lack of demand for large pieces of wood because wooden buildings are rare due to the caution against fires, thanks to the life magic spell [Ignition]. The only real demand might be for furniture materials and firewood. In the village, old things are cherished, so there isn't much demand for furniture. In the city, on the other hand, the distance is too far. It takes three days to walk there.
A merchant who makes a decent profit might be able to buy a draft animal to pull a cart, but loggers don't have the savings to buy one. As a result, they can only transport firewood on their backs. This might be the situation.
"That's an interesting idea. Maybe I should ask if furniture can sell."
"Yeah! I hope it sells, big brother."
"If it sells, it will be thanks to Kail. Maybe we can buy some good food from the merchant to celebrate."
"Yay, it's a promise!"
Yeah, it might be a good idea.
To be honest, I wanted to have something else to sell besides what I make with magic. My magic power might be more than others, but it's not infinite. Also, it's not healthy for only the things I make to sell. If I were to disappear, it could cause an economic collapse.
The land has expanded to the point where there's some spare space, and it might be time to create an environment where not just me, but others can earn money. Maybe I should start a company? From what I can see, merchants buy things made by families as side jobs, but there's no system where many people work together to produce a common product. If furniture can sell, it might be interesting to build a factory-like building, hire people, and produce goods. From my conversation with my brother, many ideas came to mind.
