And so, my life in the knight's guild began.
Even so, just idling away the days made me feel uneasy.
It was too much of a disgrace for a man over twenty, with no particular status, to do nothing.
On the other hand, going out to work would also be strange.
After discussing with the people in the knight's guild, I decided to assist the doctor.
After all, the aftereffects of magic were unknown, and it would be best to stay close to the doctor.
The doctor I was introduced to turned out to be the red-haired man who was behind the guild leader, Orve.
"I'm Orve, the doctor of the knight's guild. Nice to meet you."
Seeing Orve extend his hand with a smile, I thought that I could work in peace under this person, and I shook hands with him.
"Let's start by getting you settled in and gathering the things you need."
Orve, along with Helga, led me out of the room.
"First, let's find you a room. There are a few available near my room. I want you to choose one and use it."
Orve asked Helga, who had come with us, about the available rooms.
"There are three, sir, but only two seem suitable for living in..."
Helga called him "sir" because he was a doctor. I decided to follow her example.
"Is that so?"
Orve asked Helga.
"One of them was used as a temporary ward when the number of injured increased a year ago and has since been used as a storage room."
"Oh..."
Orve made a face as if he was about to say, "Oops."
"In that case, wouldn't the south-facing room be better? It's right in front of your room, Mr. Orve."
"Would that be okay, Yura?"
"Having a room is more than enough for me."
After thanking Orve, who was apologizing, I moved to the room with him and Helga.
"Here it is. There's a bed, so you can start living here right away."
The room Orve opened was not far from where I had been staying, a simple room.
It had one bed, one drawer-type wardrobe, one closet-like storage, and a simple desk and chair for writing.
It was larger than the one-room apartment I had lived in in my previous life. The south-facing window let in bright light.
"Thank you for the nice room," I said immediately.
For the next two days, I organized the things I had brought from home.
I also had Orve show me the places I would be moving around in the knight's guild's castle and bought the necessary items for daily life.
After all, it was a knight's guild castle.
There were some things for emergencies, but basically, there were no items for women. So, I went shopping in town with Helga.
The town below the castle was right next to it, but it was larger than the town I had lived in in this world.
The population must have been close to ten thousand.
There were many shops, so it was very enjoyable.
Starting on the third day, I began assisting Mr. Orve.
The tasks I had to do were very simple.
Injuries could be healed with recovery magic. Minor cuts were treated by magic among the group, so they didn't need much help from the doctor.
Mr. Orve's main role was to handle cases that couldn't be resolved with light recovery magic.
Serious injuries and illnesses.
Serious injuries often occurred during matches and monster hunts.
In a world with magic and skills, training injuries were more severe than accidents with ordinary swords.
When someone was seriously injured, the surrounding knights would use light recovery magic for emergency treatment and bring them in.
To fix internal injuries, Mr. Orve's stronger magic was needed.
Illnesses couldn't be treated with recovery magic, so they had to be treated with medicine.
I assisted in the care of patients.
At first, I did small tasks like cooling the heads of patients with fever using wet cloths.
As I got used to it, I also helped prepare the medicine.
It wasn't serious medicine, just herbal tea to help.
It was fun.
The doctor provided the tea leaves. He measured the amount of dried leaves using a scale and silver metal weights.
It reminded me of science experiments.
My job was to take the tea to the knights resting in the ward next to the doctor's room.
The last task of the day was to bring the medicine.
"Come back when you're done," Mr. Orve said.
I left the medical room and took the cup of tea to the adjacent ward.
"Oh, it's Yura. Thank you."
In the past week, I had met more knights.
Actually, for the first few days, they came to see the new assistant, so they remembered my face and name.
I couldn't remember them all at once, so I faked it...
But this knight, who had been in bed with a cold for a long time, called me by name multiple times, so I remembered him.
"You seem to be almost fully recovered by tomorrow, Anton."
Anton, scratching his short, flaxen hair, smiled wryly.
"I've been well taken care of. The doctor said that patients recover more slowly when young girls take care of them, but this is the first time I've recovered from a cold so quickly."
He smiled at me, who was just on the verge of marriageable age. He was a kind person.
Anton had been brought in by his comrades, half-carried, because his fever wouldn't go down.
Knights, being well-trained, rarely caught colds, so his comrades were very worried about him.
I was very worried while taking care of Anton, who was delirious on the first day, so I was happy he was getting better.
But he had recovered in just three days.
"I'm grateful to you, Yura. If you ever have any trouble, feel free to come to the Fifth Squad... But don't come alone. Ask Mr. Orve to call me, okay?"
"Yes, thank you."
I thanked him with a smile. I didn't think I would go to a place full of knights alone.
I took the empty cup and left the room.
After washing the cup, I went downstairs with my change of clothes.
This was a detached house next to the living quarters of the castle, with a laundry room and a treatment room for patients who couldn't be moved upstairs on the first floor.
I was supposed to use the bath near the laundry room during the time when Helga and the others finished their laundry work in the evening.
Since I was the only woman currently staying in the knight's guild, Helga and I had decided that I would use the bath when there were no other women around.
After taking a bath and getting clean, I saw Helga and the others off at the door as they returned home.
Next, I would eat the meal delivered from the knight's guild kitchen, along with the doctor's share.
