Dongfang Hospital, Neonatal Ward, 1:15 PM.
The office nurse, having taken a call, shouted into the office, “On-duty doctor! Patient 17 has an MRI at 2 PM, and Patient 35 has a CT scan at 2:30 PM!”
“Got it!”
A young intern doctor with a face full of acne responded enthusiastically, patting Zhang Tianyang on the shoulder.
“Buddy, you take Patient 17, and I'll take Patient 35?”
Zhang Tianyang hesitated for a few seconds before agreeing, “Okay.”
The acne-faced intern doctor, in a good mood, added an explanation.
“Our neonatal ward is different from other departments; the patients are all children.
Children tend to cry and fuss, so we need to give them medication to help them sleep before taking them for examinations.
Your Patient 17 needs to start preparation at 1:30 PM for the MRI at 2 PM.”
“Got it, thanks, senior.”
“We're all interns, no need to call me senior, ha ha. I'll go inform the nurse in charge first.”
Watching the acne-faced intern doctor leave, Zhang Tianyang refocused his attention on the screen in front of him, his mood becoming somewhat complex.
On this screen, visible only to him, were the golden, shimmering words:
Intern Doctor Gold Support System!
“Shouldn’t there be a sound effect, ding, your medical enhancement from 2040 has arrived?”
Pressing the start button, the screen displayed a loading progress: 1%.
Zhang Tianyang rubbed his face, subtly hiding the corners of his mouth that were threatening to curl up.
“System, nice to meet you, please take care of me!”
…
At 1:45 PM, the progress bar had reached 83%. Zhang Tianyang found the nurse who was drawing medication.
“Hi, I’m taking Patient 17 for the MRI.”
“Wait five minutes!”
The nurse, busy with her work, turned to look at Zhang Tianyang.
“I haven’t seen you before, are you an intern doctor?”
“Yes, I’m in my first rotation, and the neonatal ward is my first department.”
“So you just started clinical practice.” The nurse blinked at him, “You’re a newbie among newbies?”
“Yeah.” Zhang Tianyang also blinked at the nurse, “Today is my sixth day in clinical practice. I have a lot to learn from you and the other seniors, like how you just checked the nasogastric tube.”
The nurse’s face turned slightly red from the compliment, “We’re not really seniors; you doctors are the ones who are more capable. But with your personality, you might get bullied in the future.”
“Already?”
“For example, today, both Patient 17 and Patient 35 need to be taken for examinations. Patient 17 needs an MRI, which takes at least half an hour, while Patient 35’s CT scan only takes a few minutes.
You’re responsible for the children you take out, and it can take a lot of time. You also have to write the medical records, and I’ve seen many interns unable to leave on time.”
The nurse looked around to make sure the acne-faced doctor wasn’t there before continuing, “The other on-duty intern has been in clinical practice for two months. He’s quite slick and likes to push the dirty and tiring jobs onto you.”
“Thanks for the heads-up.” Zhang Tianyang wasn’t too concerned, “I’ve never seen an MRI before, so I’ll treat it as a learning experience.”
“You’re quite proactive.” The nurse finally lifted the child out of the incubator, “Come, give me a hand, push that cart over there.”
“I just glanced at his medical records; is the child’s vital signs stable?”
“Very stable, don’t worry.”
A minute later, Zhang Tianyang was ready to leave with the cart. Just before he left, he suddenly turned around.
“Hey, to thank you for the heads-up, how about I treat you to dinner after work?”
The nurse’s face, which had just lost its blush, turned red again. She paused for two seconds, then hurriedly started tidying up.
“Go quickly, or you’ll be late. I have a lot of work to do!”
Zhang Tianyang turned around and saw the two red stripes on the head of the nurse who had just appeared at the door.
It was the head nurse!
…
When Zhang Tianyang pushed the cart to the ward entrance, he saw the acne-faced senior.
He was holding a small bottle and feeding Patient 35, explaining to the man beside him.
“I’ll take him for the examination, but he won’t sleep now. He might be hungry at this time. Is this your child?”
“Yes, yes, it’s mine. He’s been in here for four days, and I couldn’t come in. When you brought him out, I recognized him! Can I go with you for the examination…?”
Zhang Tianyang greeted the acne-faced senior but didn’t pay much attention.
…
After pushing the child into the MRI room, the progress bar on the screen reached 100%.
“Welcome to the Intern Doctor Gold Support System!”
“User Information: First Rotation Intern Doctor”
“Clinical Experience: 6 days”
“Clinical Skills: Poor”
“Automatically matching learning path…”
“Learning module activated”
Zhang Tianyang quickly clicked on the only option. The screen displayed several branches:
Theoretical Knowledge, Clinical Skills Practice, Specialized System Training.
He unhesitatingly chose Clinical Skills Practice.
Clinical skills are the best reflection of a doctor’s experience and level. Only after experiencing countless emergencies, rescues, blood, screams, and despair can one remain calm in the face of any crisis.
There were many branches in Clinical Skills: ventilation, chest compressions, three major punctures…
Seeing that the MRI would take another half hour, Zhang Tianyang decided to use this time to practice.
“Whoosh!”
The scene suddenly changed. Zhang Tianyang looked around at the suddenly appearing simulated patients and various scenarios, which alternated between physical and digital forms. His eyes lit up.
“Truly a medical support system from twenty years in the future, so cool!”
…
In half an hour, Zhang Tianyang barely passed the first skill, “Ventilation.”
The clinical situations requiring ventilation are varied, and the system provided training for scenarios such as mask oxygenation, tracheal intubation, and foreign body in the airway. The simulated patients included all age groups from children to the elderly.
This realistic simulation practice significantly increased Zhang Tianyang’s proficiency in “Ventilation,” equivalent to what a normal intern doctor would gain from handling twenty to thirty patients.
“Done, let’s take him back.”
Patient 17’s vital signs remained stable, which reassured Zhang Tianyang.
“Huh? Senior?”
When he reached the ground floor of the surgical building, Zhang Tianyang saw the acne-faced senior pushing Patient 35 out for the examination.
The senior seemed flustered, his acne turning bright red due to the rush of blood, visible from a distance.
The man who claimed to be Patient 35’s father was also there, his anxious and urgent words carrying over.
“What’s going on… my child… why is this machine always beeping… what should we do…”
No way, something happened?
Zhang Tianyang’s heart sank, and he quickly pushed the cart forward.
The acne-faced senior was already frantically attaching the oxygen mask and resuscitation bag, beads of sweat hanging from his acne.
“Senior!”
Zhang Tianyang immediately noticed that Patient 35’s head was lowered, and the airway was not open, making the senior’s efforts futile.
He then looked at the child’s face.
“This child’s face is turning blue!”
