Chapter 5

A sixteen or seventeen-year-old boy, dressed in a green robe, suddenly burst into the thatched cottage. He was quite handsome, but there was something lewd about him. His eyes burned as he glanced at Lin Wan'er, but he was slightly taken aback when he saw Shi Sheng.
"Huh? You're actually alive?" The boy in the green robe clearly found it hard to believe. Lin Wan'er clutched the hem of Shi Sheng's clothes, her frail body trembling helplessly.
"I never died!" Shi Sheng was speechless, looking at the boy in the green robe with disgust. "You're not welcome here, so don't bother to stay!" He patted Lin Wan'er's hand, smiling to reassure her that everything was fine. Although he had no particular feelings for her, Shi Sheng had an instinctive desire to protect Lin Wan'er.
The boy in the green robe was named Bai Ming, an orphan and a small-time ruffian. Shi Sheng's new memories included some impressions of him.
Bai Ming often had designs on Lin Wan'er, but with her parents still alive, he didn't dare to act rashly. In the past, he often bullied the Shi Sheng of this world, who was timid and dared not resist. This time, he must have thought Shi Sheng was dead for sure, so he came to cause trouble for Lin Wan'er.
"Shi Sheng, you never dared to speak to me before, but now that you've cheated death, you've grown some courage and even dare to drive me away? It seems I need to teach you a lesson." The boy in the green robe took a few steps toward Shi Sheng, speaking harshly and making a move to attack.
With a slap!
Without hesitation, Shi Sheng raised his hand and grabbed Bai Ming's wrist, pushing him off balance. This scene not only shocked the boy in the green robe but also surprised Lin Wan'er, who stared at Shi Sheng as if he were a stranger.
"You dare to resist?" The boy in the green robe, who was clearly a bully, lost his nerve when he saw Shi Sheng's sudden firmness, but he still tried to sound tough.
"I advise you not to have designs on Sister Wan'er!" Shi Sheng's eyes flashed with a cold light. Although there was no trace of malice, the boy in the green robe had never seen Shi Sheng so fierce before and was immediately intimidated. After all, they were both sixteen or seventeen years old.
"You'll regret this, Shi Sheng. Although you didn't die, I won't let you off easily. Lin Wan'er will be mine sooner or later. If you can't pay me ten coins within three days, I'll report you to the authorities and have you all arrested!" The boy in the green robe turned and left, muttering something under his breath as he went.
"Asheng, how did you suddenly become so brave? You even scared him away, that's amazing!" Lin Wan'er seemed to have forgotten her earlier fear, her face full of surprise.
"It's just a kid's fight. A little lesson and he's scared. If you let someone bully you without a word, they'll get bolder and bolder. It's just a kid's temper!" Shi Sheng shrugged, indifferent. As a man in his twenties, dealing with a kid was no big deal.
Lin Wan'er laughed, "You act like you're so grown-up, but you're the same age as Bai Ming, and I'm even a year older than you!" The helplessness in her eyes vanished, and she seemed to find a sense of security with Shi Sheng.
"What's this about the ten coins?" Shi Sheng asked casually. Lin Wan'er was the only person he could trust right now, and he couldn't let Bai Ming take Lin Wan'er as a concubine. If he couldn't protect his fiancée, he might as well die again.
Lin Wan'er's face darkened, "Last night, Bai Ming came to see me. He saw that you had no breath left, and I borrowed ten coins from him to prepare for your funeral. He didn't trust me and didn't want to lend me the money, but I promised that if I couldn't pay him back in three days, I would work for him as a servant..." She looked helpless.
"I'm sorry, Sister Wan'er. It's all for me, but don't worry. I'll find a way to pay back the ten coins within three days. Help me walk outside for a bit!" Shi Sheng said. Lin Wan'er was concerned about his leg injury and tried to dissuade him, but he insisted, and she finally helped him outside.
It was already late afternoon, and nine blood-red suns hung in the sky. There was no wind, and the leaves of the large locust tree in front of the house were motionless. The yard was small, with two bedrooms in the thatched cottage and a kitchen in the middle.
In the yard, there was a large water tank, a pole, two wooden buckets, and a large grinding stone, nothing else. Shi Sheng looked at the conditions and sighed, especially when he saw the nine blood-red suns, which left him even more astonished.
"What a strange world!" Shi Sheng thought to himself.
"Sister Wan'er, why don't the soldiers go to fight the bandits and catch the robbers?" Shi Sheng's memory of this part was not clear, and he walked toward the kitchen and the other bedroom.
Lin Wan'er, supporting Shi Sheng, thought for a moment, "I heard the soldiers went once, but they suffered heavy casualties. The terrain of Wulong Mountain is treacherous, and ordinary people would get lost. Later, the soldiers ran out of supplies and didn't go again."
Shi Sheng entered the kitchen and found it even more rudimentary. There were a few pieces of wood by the earthen stove, but there was no grain in the kitchen. The porridge in the pot was down to just three or four bowls, which he had previously found too thin.
Lin Wan'er's stomach had been growling, and it seemed she hadn't drunk any. Shi Sheng felt a pang of sadness. This kind of life wouldn't last long, and he needed to find a way to make a living, especially to pay back Bai Ming's ten coins, or Lin Wan'er would be in danger.
"Sister Wan'er, besides fishing and hunting, what else can earn some coins?" Shi Sheng remembered that Lin Wan'er's parents made a living by fishing and hunting, and the Shi Sheng of this world often helped with odd jobs but had no special skills. He, however, didn't know how to fish or hunt!
"Besides these two, you can do short-term work in the village. Some wealthy families need temporary help for heavy labor, or you can do embroidery and weaving. Aunt Wu can help find such jobs, and people in the village who want to work will go to Aunt Wu," Lin Wan'er said.
After a brief understanding of the situation, Shi Sheng nodded, "Sister Wan'er, I'll rest for a bit. I'll see if I can go out and earn some coins tomorrow. You should eat more."
"Sister had a few bowls this morning. Asheng, you're weak now, you need to eat more. Besides, you shouldn't go out tomorrow; you need to rest." Lin Wan'er said, trying to serve Shi Sheng some porridge, but her stomach was growling.
"Sister Wan'er, I'm full. You should eat more. I'll go back to the room and rest. I'll go out tomorrow to find short-term work and earn some coins." Shi Sheng's eyes welled up. He was easily moved by movies, let alone real-life experiences. He didn't want to lose face in front of Lin Wan'er and was deeply touched by her gentle and considerate nature. Such a woman deserved to be protected!
Back in the room, Shi Sheng sat on the bed, his eyes fixed on the distance. He sighed, "I need to find a way to earn some money to support us. I can't let Sister Wan'er go hungry, and I can't let anyone take her away!"
Shi Sheng suddenly thought of the old shaman from Earth, who had taught him the art of cultivating mental power. He had practiced each level.
Meditation was the entry point, the first level was similar to self-hypnosis, and the second level involved practicing mental power outside the body. These were not secret techniques; you could find a lot of them online!
Back then, Shi Sheng had learned meditation to relieve stress from his studies. It made him feel more relaxed and energetic the next day.
"According to the old shaman, once you can sense mental power through meditation, you enter the first level, which can effectively hypnotize yourself. If you reach the extreme of the first level but lack mental power, you can use psychological suggestion to hypnotize others with their cooperation.
Only by reaching the second level, where mental power can leave the body, can you forcibly hypnotize others and even gain some abilities beyond human understanding, like the so-called special abilities on Earth, but very few people can achieve this.
Old Uncle Wang injected mental power into talismans to treat illnesses and hypnotized me, using some psychological suggestions to relax me. He must have reached the second level of mental power, so he must be a mental power practitioner."
"Could the special abilities on Earth be ancient mental power techniques? Could they cultivate mental power to such a high level? If so, could this world be more suitable for cultivating mental power?" Shi Sheng thought.
Closing his eyes, Shi Sheng adjusted his state of mind, relaxed his body, and easily entered the first level of meditation, which he had found effective for treating insomnia.
After a while, Shi Sheng felt a sense of peace, and the influence of the outside world on him was minimized. The wind outside gradually faded, and the flow of time became less noticeable.
Time slowly passed, and the nine blood-red suns set, replaced by a bright moon in the sky. Shi Sheng remained in meditation, and after many failures, he suddenly felt an invisible force flowing within him.
Strangely, this force had no fixed form. Sometimes Shi Sheng imagined it as golden, and the mysterious force turned into golden light flowing through his body.
Sometimes he imagined it as a fixed sphere, and the force slowly condensed into a ball, gathering in his dantian, a feeling of being half asleep and half awake.
Shi Sheng said excitedly, "This is mental power? Truly amazing. The old shaman said it would take one or two years for someone with good potential to sense it. I tried before but felt nothing. It seems the conditions in this world are more suitable for mental power practitioners."
Just as Shi Sheng was excited, he almost exited the meditative state. He quickly steadied his mind and carefully sensed the force, then tried to control it with his mind, directing the golden light to his injured leg and believing with certainty that it would heal quickly, similar to self-hypnosis.
Miraculously, Shi Sheng felt a golden glow on his leg, a tingling sensation, and the pain lessened, more effectively and longer-lasting than the talisman water from Uncle Wang.
However, if Shi Sheng doubted the existence of the mental power or believed his leg wouldn't heal, the golden glow would quickly disappear, and the pain would return. When he believed and controlled the mental power with his mind, the golden glow would reappear.
"Indeed, it's similar to self-hypnosis on Earth. No wonder doctors don't tell patients they have terminal illnesses. If they become pessimistic and don't believe they will recover, the negative mental power will accelerate their death.
Terminal patients need to maintain a positive attitude to believe they will recover. A positive mindset represents positive mental power, which helps the body heal.
However, this common knowledge has no scientific basis, and people don't believe in the existence of mental power, so it's considered a modern unexplained treatment method. Mental power is truly mysterious, but it seems difficult to cultivate to a high level on Earth." Shi Sheng marveled.
Thinking of terminal patients, Shi Sheng conducted a human experiment on himself, imagining his leg injury wouldn't heal and would get worse. After a while, the mental power golden glow didn't disappear, but the pain increased.
Just like when you cut your finger, the more you think about it, the more it hurts. This is the effect of mental power. Shi Sheng winced and quickly focused on his cultivation. It seemed that mental power could harm oneself and could also attack others when outside the body.
Unconsciously, the sky outside brightened, and Shi Sheng remained motionless on the bed, although he hadn't slept all night, he felt extremely energetic and not at all tired.
After a night of meditation, Shi Sheng's leg injury was almost completely healed, which even surprised him. He now believed in the existence of mental power and was more determined to continue his cultivation.
"Like the old shaman said, if you don't believe in love, how can you feel its power? Daoism talks about transforming the void into reality, and Buddhism talks about cultivating the false into the true. Only by believing can it exist.
The void enters the body, using the void to cultivate reality, condensing reality into truth, and ultimately achieving great accomplishment, known as the cultivation method. It's the same theory as mental power, using the void to cultivate reality, condensing reality into truth, and ultimately achieving the great path!
With my knowledge of hypnosis from Earth, I should be able to cultivate more easily. I wonder what level I can reach, but it seems this world is more suitable for cultivating mental power!" Shi Sheng smiled.
Suddenly, a scream came from the next room. Shi Sheng remembered Bai Ming and his face changed. He quickly ran out of the room! (This chapter ends, the next one is even more exciting!)
