It was unknown how much time had passed, but inside Shi Sheng's room!
A fine thread hung a copper ring, which finally began to tremble faintly. Although the movement was barely noticeable, almost like an illusion, Shi Sheng laughed excitedly, knowing it was not an illusion.
After a moment of joy, Shi Sheng suppressed his excitement and smiled, saying, "I practiced for one or two months in the modern world without any response, but now, just at the beginning, there's a change. I wonder if it's due to the foundation I built over those two months, or if cultivating mental power in this world is faster than in the modern world."
As he spoke, Shi Sheng continued to focus his mind, his eyes fixed on the hanging copper ring. He kept shouting in his mind to make it swing, using his consciousness to control his mental power. The copper ring trembled again and then slowly began to rotate.
Shi Sheng did not get carried away with excitement but instead devoted himself entirely to practice. Unknown how much time had passed, the copper ring's rotation speed increased, sometimes reversing direction, and at other times, flying up and down.
As the sky gradually brightened, Shi Sheng finally reached the point of complete control. Just as he was about to celebrate, he suddenly felt dizzy, his forehead breaking out in a light sweat, his face turning pale, and his body feeling weak, unable to control the copper ring's movement any longer.
Shi Sheng shook his dazed head, still feeling weak, and his expression changed slightly. "Is this a case of qi deviation? No, according to the descriptions in fantasy novels, could it be a heart demon entering the body?" Shi Sheng became somewhat anxious and uncertain.
After a moment, Shi Sheng frowned and said, "But I shouldn't have reached the level where a heart demon can be triggered yet!"
Shi Sheng was puzzled. In novels, when a heart demon appears, it's usually a powerful old monster capable of moving mountains and seas. But he had only just made the copper ring move a few times! He was practicing happily when he suddenly lost his strength. What was going on?
"Hmm? Could it be that, like in the novels, my mental power is insufficient, causing extreme weakness in my body?" Shi Sheng calmed down and thought for a moment, nodding slightly. "It seems that mental power is not infinite and can be exhausted. I can only wait for it to recover. By the way, meditation should help it recover faster."
Shi Sheng suddenly realized that without a master to guide him, his cultivation was indeed dangerous. Even with the old trickster around, more experience and safety would be beneficial.
Thus, Shi Sheng meditated for about an hour, and his mental state recovered to about 80%, and his body no longer felt as weak as before. Instead, he felt full of energy.
He felt his mental power and consciousness had strengthened, and his senses, hearing, and vision had improved. Suddenly, he noticed the door to the next room opening slightly, and the sound of light footsteps reached his ears. Finally, his door was opened.
"Sheng, it's time for breakfast." Lin Wan'er carried a tray with two bowls of hot porridge and a small dish, placing it on the table in the room and smiling at Shi Sheng.
"How warm!" Looking at Lin Wan'er, Shi Sheng felt a warm feeling in his heart. After washing up, he chatted and laughed with Lin Wan'er while eating breakfast. Although they had some spare money, they couldn't just sit and eat it all. In the end, the two decided to find Aunt Wu to see if there was any work.
"Wan'er, you look beautiful today!" On the way, Shi Sheng said sincerely.
Lin Wan'er blushed. "Nonsense, why are you suddenly so smooth-talking? I haven't even put on makeup, and you still say I look beautiful!" Lin Wan'er gave Shi Sheng a glance, but her eyes flashed with happiness. No woman dislikes being complimented, especially by someone she likes.
Shi Sheng looked at Lin Wan'er's beautiful face, her worn-out dress, and her plain, unadorned appearance. She truly couldn't compare to the second miss, Yue Ling. Thinking of such a good woman by his side, Shi Sheng felt a bit sad.
"Wan'er, don't worry. In the future, I will definitely earn money to make you look beautiful. But even without makeup, you are the most beautiful in my eyes!" Shi Sheng said with a smile.
"Smooth-talking again!" Lin Wan'er said without turning her head. The two arrived at Aunt Wu's house without realizing it.
"Hey! Shi Sheng, what a coincidence!" Bai Ming appeared at Aunt Wu's house, his lips curling into a smile. However, Shi Sheng ignored him, and Aunt Wu shook her head.
"Shi Sheng, Wan'er, there's a rush job today that needs many hands. Wu Shan is preparing to weave fifty grass mats to send to the mountain god temple. You two come along!" Aunt Wu finished speaking and waved at Bai Ming and the seven or eight teenagers. These were almost all little beggars who sometimes had to work to survive when they couldn't beg for food.
"Wait!" Just as Shi Sheng was about to step forward, Bai Ming smiled mockingly. "Aunt Wu, is today's job urgent?"
"Of course, that's why I asked you to find more little brothers," Aunt Wu asked, puzzled, but Shi Sheng knew something was wrong. Bai Ming was up to no good.
Sure enough, Bai Ming nodded with a smile. "Aunt Wu, if Shi Sheng is here, we won't come. If you need us, I, Bai Ming, guarantee to complete those fifty mats."
"You..." Lin Wan'er was angry, and Shi Sheng grabbed her hand, then looked at Aunt Wu, sending a questioning glance.
Aunt Wu looked at the teenagers and said, "Two coins a day, will you do it?" The seven or eight teenagers quickly nodded, eager to earn money.
Bai Ming's face turned cold. "Listen up, I'm familiar with the town's big families and their stewards. If anyone disobeys me for these two coins, you won't get any work in the town, humph."
Sure enough, after Bai Ming spoke, the teenagers fell silent. Some nodded helplessly, while others looked at Bai Ming with anger, but they had to obey him to survive. Bai Ming was smooth-talking, and many people in the town knew him.
There were two fat and thin teenagers who seemed to be Bai Ming's close friends. Bai Ming whispered something in their ears, and their eyes flashed with a sinister look as they glared at Shi Sheng and Lin Wan'er. It was unclear what they were plotting.
"Never mind, Aunt Wu. Wan'er and I can't finish it alone. Let them go. I wanted to take Wan'er out to play today anyway!" Shi Sheng said with a smile, then turned and left with Lin Wan'er. A moment later, his face turned grim, thinking he would find a chance to teach Bai Ming a lesson.
"Sheng, don't be upset. We can go around and look for work ourselves!" Lin Wan'er comforted him.
After a moment of thought, Shi Sheng narrowed his eyes and said, "No need, Wan'er. Let's go find Uncle Wang. I have something to ask him!"
"Find Uncle Wang? Sheng, are you feeling unwell? What's wrong?" Lin Wan'er thought Shi Sheng was unwell, as that was the only reason to see a doctor.
"Ha ha, don't worry, Wan'er. I want to learn talisman medicine!" Shi Sheng said seriously.
"Ah!" Lin Wan'er seemed distracted, then reacted. "What? You want to learn talisman medicine? Sheng, are you joking? We were tested at the age of six and couldn't sense mental power, so you can't learn talisman medicine!"
"Give it a try! There's no loss, and who knows, maybe something has changed in the past ten years!" Shi Sheng smiled.
"Alright!" Lin Wan'er didn't argue to avoid hurting his self-esteem and took Shi Sheng to Uncle Wang's house.
It was a small courtyard, not a thatched hut, but an ordinary house. There was no sign, as everyone in the village knew Uncle Wang was a talisman doctor.
The two entered the house, which was small and simply furnished. Two potted plants were placed by the door, and a wooden table was directly opposite. Uncle Wang sat in a chair behind the table, holding a book and reading intently.
"Ah? Shi Sheng, Wan'er, you're here! Come in and sit down!" Uncle Wang noticed the two and smiled kindly, gesturing to the two chairs in front of the table.
"Uncle Wang, thank you for treating Sheng last time. How much do I owe you?" Lin Wan'er had no money to pay for Shi Sheng's treatment, but Uncle Wang had agreed to help.
Seeing the two sit down, Uncle Wang smiled and said, "Forget it, you're not well-off. Who's sick today?"
"Uncle Wang, I want to learn talisman medicine!" Shi Sheng said seriously. Uncle Wang's eyes flashed with a sharp look, and he stared at Shi Sheng for a long time without speaking. Lin Wan'er felt a bit awkward.
