"Amitabha Buddha!" Matron Guan called, her pale face regaining some color.
Meanwhile, Guan Da Ye exhaled deeply, as though releasing his own anxiety. A few seconds after, he let out a small sharp laugh and fixed his gaze onto the midwife. "My child, ah! Is it a boy?"
"It is a daughter!" The midwife replied, her smile shortening for a quick second before she recovered. It was not her business, after all.
At her words, Guan Da Ye showed a disappointed look. Matron Guan's eyes also dimmed, her excitement dampening slightly. After all, it was best to have a son.
But, the event has already passed. In fact, her daughter-in-law was in labor for such a long time to deliver her grandchild. At that reminder, Matron Guan moved to enter the room, motioning the midwife to move to the side.
"I'm going to see my daughter-in-law."
When she entered the room, Matron Guan quickly took a look to determine the condition of her daughter-in-law. Mrs. Guan had given birth with no blood at all and, after three days of labor, she finally allowed herself to sleep.
Checking her daughter-in-law's sleeping silhouette, Matron Guan could not help but sigh.
"It's a blessing and great fate. It's a blessing to be able to give birth to a girl safely. She almost passed out. Thanks to the thunder, this girl is gifted by God and blessed." She mentioned, her eyes roving over the baby's form. The umbilical cord had already been severed. Now, the baby was swaddled and placed onto her mother's chest.
After a few seconds of observation, Matron Guan could not help but furrow her eyebrows in confusion.
"Why doesn't this baby cry?" she asked, suddenly nervous. It was muffled, maybe there was something wrong.
At the question, the midwife could not help but adopt a look of confusion as well. She couldn't recall the baby crying when she exited her mother's womb either.
With a determined look, the midwife lifted the baby off Madam Luo's chest and patted its bottom with a bit of force.
The girl babbled a few times, but she didn't cry.
At this peculiar reaction, Matron Guan's eyes could not help but widen in surprise. This child was really strange!
After two more hits, the girl babbled again and kicked her calf, but still did not cry.
"Don't be a..." Matron Guan choked, but the word freak did not come out after all.
"Don't worry, this girl must be a blessed person," the midwife said as she tried hard to hide her nervousness. Truthfully, she had never seen a baby who didn't cry. Thus, she did not know what would happen. Her only resort was to comfort the new grandmother.
"I hope so!"
The old lady Guan replied with a frown as she stared at the small bundle in the midwife's hands. Her affection for this little seed was slowly whittling away. Suddenly, she caught sight of her daughter-in-law shifting in bed.
Seeing the target of her gaze, the midwife quickly urged Matron Guan. "Bring some tonic soup for Guan Da Ye's wife, you have to be careful about confinement. After all, this birth was not easy. Take care so it does not affect the next child."
With that reminder, Matron Guan stepped forward and took the baby from the midwife's hands as she called out for her son. At the call, Guan Da Ye quickly stepped towards the door and opened it, looking worried.
"Little Guan, here," she said as she transferred the little child into her son's arms, making sure that his technique was acceptable before tilting her head towards her daughter-in-law. "Take care of your wife, I will cook a bowl of broth for her."
After saying this, Matron Guan personally led the midwife out of the room. Upon reaching the door, she reached into her sleeves and took out a small red pouch, quickly pushing it into the midwife's hands with a slight bow. "Thank you so much, Wan Po!"
At that, Wan Po merely smiled and took the small parcel without looking, "It is my duty, after all." With those words, she took a small bow, reminded the new grandmother to take care of the mother and child, and left.
After seeing her off, Matron stood by the door for a few moments, savoring the sudden reprieve from the stormy weather. Then, she quickly made her way to the kitchen. After all, the Guan family’s life could be considered difficult. They could not afford servants, thus Matron Guan could only rely on herself to do everything while Madam Luo recuperated.
