"Do you want to invite the elders in your family or grandma Quanfu in the city?" Madam Luo asked as she gazed at her husband's form, worry forming in her heart.
Guan Da Ye answered casually, "I'll ask mother tomorrow."
At the curt reply, Madam Luo opened her mouth several times without saying anything before deciding not to, stuffing the grievances in her heart. He did not even look towards her, all this time.
At that point, the little bundle beside her started to kick up a fuss, wanting to eat.
At the sound, Madam Luo's eyes quickly softened as she fixed her gaze on the little bundle, feeling relieved. Lately, the little child had started crying. Though it was soft and only whenever she was hungry, Madam Luo thought that it was quite an improvement.
Guan Da Ye, on the other hand, frowned and didn't even spare the little child a glance, opting to settle himself into the temporary wooden bed that was next to the Kang. Soon, his snores accompanied the little child's screams.
At this, a sour grievance surged in Madam Luo's heart, but she was still afraid that the child would anger her sleeping husband. Thus, she opened her clothes to feed the child, coaxing the little bun to latch on with whispers.
On the third day since the little Guan's birth, the Guan family held the bathing ceremony. Unfortunately, Guan Da Ye did not invite anyone. In the low bungalow of the Guan family, only Guan Da Ye, Matron Guan, and Madam Luo were present.
At that moment, Madam Luo was crying as she held the little Guan baby to her chest. Meanwhile, Guan Da Ye stared at her with furious eyes.
Why?
This was because little Sui Xi's eyes did not open.
When the baby woke up, she just refused to open her eyes, which made Madam Luo panic. But, there was nothing she could do. Thus, she could only cry her fear out. But her actions infuriated Guan Da Ye. Right now, he stood from his small wooden bed, dressed in a thin sleeping robe, his eyes glinting with fire.
This… This woman and child! He thought to himself angrily as he turned his back to them, opting to walk back and forth to calm himself. First, I sleep on this small bed. Now, she grates my ears with her cries! Useless! He continued to think as he observed his wife from the corner of his eyes.
The boiling sun outside was almost suffocating, which only added to his temper.
After a few moments ...
"Come here!" Guan Da Ye yelled out, suddenly grabbing the child from his wife's hand, and stretched out his hand to forcefully open the child's eyelids.
Little Sui Xi screamed and cried but still did not open her eyes nor shed any tears.
Madam Luo screamed.
"What are you doing? Give the child back to me!" She said as she snatched back the little crying bundle, her eyes shining with fear and anger. This is our child! How dare he!
Fearing that Guan Da Ye would hurt the child again, she turned to face the bed and lowered her body against it, caging the small child against her body and arms, preparing herself to be her baby's shield.
Meanwhile, Matron Guan was not idle, either. When Madam Luo snatched Sui Xi back, she quickly stepped forward and repeatedly hit her son. "Do you want the end of your child’s life?”
"Bad life!" Guan Da Ye responded as his hand formed a fist and flew onto Matron Guan's table, which was moved into the room. With that, he aimed a sneer at his wife, disdain flashing in his eyes, before leaving.
As he left, Matron Guan's stiff and frightening form finally relaxed. With a sigh, she looked towards Madam Luo, who was still using her body as a shield, bowed her head and quietly left, as well.
Finally, silence enveloped the small quarters.
A few seconds later…
Madam Luo finally relaxed and slumped against the bed, on her side, facing her daughter. Looking at the small bundle next to her, tears gathered at the corners of Madam Luo's eyes.
With a trembling hand, she reached out and placed her finger into Sui Xi's little hand, sobbing when the little girl clasped onto it.
"Sui Xi is good, ah. Sui Xi is a mother's good daughter. She is a blessed person."
