After Lin Qiangsheng returned home, he carefully recalled the information about the 1977 college entrance examination that he had seen and understood in his previous life.
Only then did he realize that he needed to review his junior high school knowledge again.
In 1977 and the following year, college students had to make up for their poor foundation by studying high school subjects in college, with some even spending nearly a year doing so. This indicated that the exam questions this year would likely include a lot of junior high school content.
The newspaper reported that this year's exam would be divided into two categories: liberal arts and science. The liberal arts subjects were: politics, Chinese, mathematics, and history and geography. The science subjects were: politics, Chinese, mathematics, and physics and chemistry. Students applying for foreign language majors would also take a foreign language test. The questions would be set by provinces, cities, and autonomous regions, and the exams would be organized uniformly by counties (districts).
After some thought, Lin Qiangsheng decided that applying for a foreign language major would suit him best. He found it very easy to study subjects that relied on memory.
At home, he dug out his junior high school textbooks and started reading them, some of which he had never even flipped through before.
Politics, Chinese, foreign language, mathematics, history and geography. Six subjects in total, which added up to a considerable amount.
Lin Qiangsheng quickly flipped through each book, relying on his excellent memory. After reading through the books once, much of the content would be memorized.
He lost track of time until he heard a light click from the courtyard door. Turning his head, he saw Chen Yao enter through the glass.
Lin Qiangsheng got up, put on his shoes, and opened the door to step out of the house, just as Chen Yao was opening her door.
"Here you are!" Lin Qiangsheng smiled.
Chen Yao's face was frozen red, and she nodded, saying "Mm."
Lin Qiangsheng quickly pulled Chen Yao into the house, saying, "Come in quickly."
Chen Yao was pulled in and then pushed to sit by the kang, staring at him with her big eyes.
Lin Qiangsheng smiled and said, "I'll get you a glass of water."
Lin Qiangsheng went to the kitchen, poured a glass of hot water, and brought it to Chen Yao.
Chen Yao took off her gloves and held the warm cup with both hands.
She turned her head and looked at the books on the table. Chen Yao picked up a piece of paper and saw that it listed the subjects for Chinese, mathematics, foreign language, history and geography, and politics, with the titles of junior and senior high school books neatly categorized.
At the bottom, it read, "Chinese composition topics: Whenever I sing 'The East Is Red'; Under the Red Flag."
"What is this?" Chen Yao asked, pointing to the topics.
Lin Qiangsheng glanced at it and said, "I'm guessing. This year's college entrance exam Chinese composition topics. Don't tell anyone else!"
Chen Yao nodded vigorously and said, "Oh! I won't tell anyone!"
"Why are you still reading junior high school books?" she asked, looking up at Lin Qiangsheng.
Lin Qiangsheng said, "I think the students' basic knowledge is very poor now, so the teachers setting the questions in each province might consider lowering the difficulty. That's why I think it's a good idea to review junior high school books."
Chen Yao asked in confusion, "Is that so? But our classmates all have good junior high school knowledge!"
Lin Qiangsheng nodded and smiled, saying, "This is to take care of the first batch of students who are taking the college entrance exam after its resumption. Don't tell anyone. If your classmates find out, they might take the exam early!"
Chen Yao thought for a moment and realized, "That's not fair! If we take the exam next year, the questions might be harder!"
Lin Qiangsheng laughed and nodded ambiguously, saying, "I don't know, it's just my guess."
Chen Yao smiled, showing her white teeth, and said in a cunning tone, "So, should I try to register this year?"
Lin Qiangsheng smiled and nodded, saying, "If you want to try, go ahead. It's better if you pass, but if you don't, it's still good practice! This year's opportunity is rare, so you must seize it to avoid regretting it in the future!"
Chen Yao wrinkled her nose and said in a playful tone, "You won't pass!"
Lin Qiangsheng smiled and nodded, saying, "Chen Yao will definitely pass!"
Chen Yao giggled, and a pair of light dimples appeared on her cute face.
"Alright! I should go home now. Thank you for telling me this news." Chen Yao put the cup on the table and stood up.
Lin Qiangsheng accompanied Chen Yao for a short distance, and they were almost at her doorstep.
Chen Yao turned around, pushed Lin Qiangsheng, and said softly, "Go back!"
Lin Qiangsheng said, "Be careful."
Chen Yao waved her hand and said, "Oh, I'm already home. What do I need to be careful about? Go back quickly!"
Lin Qiangsheng smiled and turned back.
Chen Yao took a few steps and then turned around, calling softly, "Lin Qiangsheng, what subject are you going to apply for?"
Lin Qiangsheng walked back and said to Chen Yao, "Foreign language, it's easier to study."
Chen Yao asked, "What's easier to study? Is it easier to pass? What do you think if I also apply for a foreign language major?"
Lin Qiangsheng nodded and smiled, saying, "Sure, then we can go to the same school."
Chen Yao wrinkled her nose, raised her hand, and playfully said, "Who would go to the same school with you? Dream on!"
Lin Qiangsheng chuckled and reached out to touch Chen Yao's cheek.
"Hey! What are you doing!" Chen Yao jumped back, like a frightened little rabbit.
"Ring ring..." A bicycle bell rang from behind.
Lin Qiangsheng turned around and saw Chen Yao's older sister, Chen Fang.
Chen Fang was pushing her bike and saw her sister and Lin Qiangsheng standing together from a distance. When she got closer, she saw that they were actually touching each other!
Chen Fang glared at her sister and asked Lin Qiangsheng, "What are you two doing?"
Chen Yao let out a playful cry, ran to Chen Fang, and hugged her sister, saying, "Nothing, just talking!"
Chen Yao gave Lin Qiangsheng a few meaningful glances, signaling him to leave quickly.
Lin Qiangsheng smiled and said, "Sister Fang, I just sent Chen Yao back, I'll go now."
Chen Fang watched Lin Qiangsheng walk past her and head towards the alley entrance, then turned to her sister and said, "I saw you two touching each other, what were you doing?"
Chen Yao said in a委屈 tone, "I really didn't do anything! Who touched him? He touched me."
Chen Fang scowled and said, "If you didn't do anything, why did you admit to being touched? Don't do that in the future!"
Chen Yao shook her head and then nodded vigorously, pouting and pleading, "Good sister, I just went to Lin Qiangsheng's house to see. I know, I know!"
Chen Yao dodged and quickly blocked her sister's hand.
Chen Fang wasn't really going to hit her sister; she was just scaring her. Hearing her sister's words, she asked, "Why did you go to his house?"
The two sisters entered the house, and Chen Yao said, "Lin Qiangsheng is going to take the college entrance exam, so I went to ask him about it."
Chen Fang was surprised and asked, "He's going to take the college entrance exam? Can he pass?"
Chen Yao told her sister the analysis she had heard from Lin Qiangsheng.
After pulling her sister into the house, Chen Fang thought for a moment, her eyes brightening, and she said softly, "Maybe he's right!"
Chen Yao giggled and nodded, saying, "Lin Qiangsheng is quite smart. He guessed this, and there are a few transfer students in our class who are older and have poor foundations!"
Chen Fang hugged her sister and said with a smile, "Why don't I try to register too? I often review junior and senior high school books. Maybe I'll really pass!"
Chen Yao turned around and hugged her sister's neck, opening her eyes wide and asking, "Then you won't go to the city theater group anymore?"
Chen Fang nodded and said, "If I pass, I won't go. That janitor job isn't very meaningful. If I pass, I'll choose a major I like and study hard. After graduation, it will definitely be better than being a janitor!"
Chen Yao nodded vigorously and said, "Yes, yes."
