Chapter 1. Prologue

3 min read723 words

Ten years ago, a great upheaval occurred on Earth. Mysterious fog appeared in various parts of the world, and people enveloped by the fog fell into a deep sleep. Thus, it was named the 'Dream Mist.' It was called this because it was believed to carry people into dreams.

Around the same time, 'Dreamers' appeared. They were the ones who unraveled the unknown phenomenon of the Dream Mist and alleviated the fear it caused. Only a tiny fraction of the world's population could awaken as Dreamers, and those who did experienced special dreams within the Dream Mist.

Some fought monsters and brought back strange trophies, some collected minerals that did not exist on Earth, and others gathered miraculous herbs to advance medicine. It was unknown whether this was another world existing in a different dimension or merely a manifestation of dreams.

Fear turned into admiration. All wealth and honor were bestowed upon the Dreamers. However, no one had discovered the criteria for becoming a Dreamer. Their talents, abilities, and the timing of their awakening varied.

For ten years after the Dream Mist appeared, people called this period the golden age of human history. They regarded it as a blessing from the gods, despite not knowing the cause, nature, or principle behind the birth of the Dream Mist and Dreamers.

Until the last year.

"Stay awake...! Don't fall asleep!"

"I, I... can't... I can't hold on any longer... You have to... you have to..."

Seeing his colleague's eyes slowly close, Ian fiercely slapped his face. Ian's own eyes were bloodshot, and he looked as if he could collapse at any moment. It was instinctively difficult to resist the urge to sleep, even though he knew that falling asleep meant the end. Holding on until now was a miracle. After slapping his colleague's face for a while, Ian suddenly stopped and, with trembling hands, let go of his colleague.

"...He's already asleep."

In the end, he was left alone. Ian wrapped his arms around his body to ward off the bone-chilling cold. His breath formed white vapor with each exhale. He huddled up, looking back with a resentful gaze. The world was completely shrouded in black fog.

Yes, everything started with that black fog.

Just like all Dream Mists, the mysterious black fog appeared suddenly, first in Antarctica, then gradually spread to South America and the rest of the world. People gradually fled north. The world cooperated to form expeditions to eliminate the black fog.

This place is the North Pole, the last refuge of the fleeing human race. But it was caught up here as well.

"Haa, haa..."

The black fog itself contained no toxic substances. However, it devoured all living things. Once you fell asleep in the black fog, you never woke up again, whether you were human, animal, or plant. Any organism that needed sleep was affected.

Therefore, many top-tier Dreamers, including the world's strongest, challenged the black fog, but none returned.

The ominous black fog seemed to be taking everyone somewhere.

...To hell, perhaps.

Just like all dreams, there were good dreams and bad dreams. The black fog was a nightmare.

"No... I can't... any longer..."

Ian's eyes slowly closed. He was the last remaining Dreamer, perhaps the last survivor of humanity.

Ian felt wronged. In fact, his survival until now was not entirely due to his own will but to the one-sided kindness and expectations of those around him. He had been an unknown third-rate Dreamer for nearly ten years.

All Dreamers have a unique skill when they awaken, but Ian's unique skill was so weak that it could only be used once in a lifetime.

However, the black fog made people pay attention to Ian's unique skill.

'Premonitory Dream'

The most fatal flaw was the extremely high mortality rate and the inability to control the range of memory transmission. In short, it meant that you could only use it if you were willing to give up your current life.

Ian seemed to have made up his mind, biting his lip. Everyone was asleep. What was the point of being the only one left alive? He had already reached his limit.

Then, shouldn't he try something? For the sake of a future where he could survive.

In the desolate world, the lonely struggle of Dreamer Ian began.
