Chapter 75

Continuous trap casualties made the search team extra cautious, even without orders. Although their pace slowed, they managed to traverse the entire forest before nightfall.

A day of searching found no trace of the Soviet team or their hideout, but it wasn't without gains. Whether it was mountain chickens, wild chickens, roe deer, elk, wild boars, or wolves, each team had its share of prey, almost like a successful hunt.

On the road, the Japanese soldiers sat around the campfire, and soon the smell of roasted and stewed meat filled the forest.

Shimayama Yumi and his group also improved their living conditions. Over 300 people received two adult elk and several wild chickens and pheasants as offerings by noon, and they feasted heartily. As night fell, they were still roasting meat. Apart from not allowing alcohol, the food was very satisfying, and the lively atmosphere was inevitable.

One Japanese soldier, possibly having eaten too much greasy food, hurried to the designated toilet area, pulling up his pants. In the dim silhouette of a sentry about ten meters away, he hastily took off his pants, preparing to squat down.

At that moment, he suddenly heard the sound of dry leaves being stepped on. Startled, he was about to turn around when he felt a sharp pain in his throat. The pressure inside his body instantly disappeared, and a foul odor spread.

"Damn! What a coward!"

Shunzi secretly cursed, quietly dragging the corpse into the woods, so quietly that even the nearby sentry didn't hear.

Dongku watched the tent through his night vision goggles. He hadn't seen the lieutenant colonel mentioned in the telegram, Shimayama Yumi, all day. Even if Shimayama Yumi appeared, he wouldn't take action. He wouldn't risk angering the Japanese by killing a lieutenant colonel. The current number of searchers could still be easily handled and their movements avoided. If the numbers increased, the situation would become tense, and it wouldn't be worth it.

In less than half an hour, after Huzi had also eliminated a Japanese soldier, everyone gathered at the designated location in the darkness.

Dongku briefly outlined the next action and then led the group, equipped with night vision goggles, into the night.

Shortly after they left, a Japanese soldier, noticing his companion hadn't returned for a long time, went to look for him with a flashlight. When he saw the bloodstains and drag marks on the ground, he was terrified and screamed.

With the scream, the camp immediately fell into chaos, with the light from flashlights flickering through the forest. However, after a night of searching, they only found the bodies of the eleven Japanese soldiers who had been attacked, with no other clues.

Although the enemy had infiltrated right under their noses and killed eleven soldiers, Shimayama Yumi's eyes gleamed with excitement. This indicated that the Soviet team had not escaped the encirclement and was still near his camp, hiding to avoid the search. This also echoed an old Chinese saying: "The darkest place is under the lamp."

Upon learning of the enemy's presence near the camp, he quickly ordered two regiments to enter the forest from both sides of the road, about seven to eight kilometers away, to silently surround a fifteen-kilometer radius around his camp.

After issuing the order, Shimayama Yumi spent the night formulating a search plan. He had successfully reduced the Soviet team's activity area. The next day, he would continue to compress it until their activity area was within ten kilometers, at which point he could conduct a thorough search.

Sunlight penetrated the noisy forest. Although it was not yet foggy, the moisture in the air made the forest hazy, impairing visibility.

All the Japanese soldiers searching the mountain concentrated in the fifteen-kilometer radius and began their search. Some moved very quickly, while others strolled leisurely, in a staggered formation, not the synchronized search method of the previous day.

A leading Japanese soldier, gun in hand, cautiously advanced. Suddenly, his foot moved, and intense pain shot through his brain amidst the rustling of dry leaves.

He screamed in pain, dropped his gun, and fell to the ground.

His cries alarmed the other soldiers, who bent down to search for the target.

After a brief panic, once they confirmed it was a trap, some soldiers approached to treat the injured man, who was grimacing in pain.

When they saw the iron trap deeply embedded in his flesh, one of the soldiers cursed, used his strength to pry open the trap, and pulled out the injured man's bloodied foot.

The commanding second lieutenant first reported the situation and then ordered, "Carry the trap, you two support Hori, and continue forward."

With the trap in front, the leading Japanese soldier learned his lesson. He used a stick to sweep the dry leaves on the ground. If he touched the highly sensitive pressure plate, the trap would be triggered.

He walked confidently on the swept ground, thinking he could avoid the trap. As he walked, suddenly his body lurched downward, and a bone-scraping pain shot from his foot to his calf.

When the sharp pain struck, a惨烈的叫声 (a terrible scream) echoed through the forest.

As the nearby companions dragged him out of the dry leaves, where his leg was half-sunk, everyone drew a sharp breath.

They saw a one-inch-thick, two-foot-square piece of wood with a hole just large enough for a foot, surrounded by half-foot-long triangular iron nails. The nails were angled in a funnel shape, firmly trapping his foot, with the sharp points deeply embedded in his flesh, and his calf was cut with deep, bone-visible wounds.

“Damn!!”

The Japanese soldier treating him cursed, using a bayonet to split the wooden board used to trap the elk.

About a kilometer away, another small team also fell victim to the traps, with five consecutive injuries. This left the thirty-man search team with only fifteen members still able to move freely.

Upon receiving the report, Shimayama Yumi concluded that the Soviet team seemed to have no more bombs, only these homemade traps. But how many traps could they have in front of such a large force?

“Is this all they can do?”

Shimayama Yumi did not let the injuries of a few soldiers disrupt his plans, so he did not issue any orders.

The injuries of a few soldiers did not affect
