Bone setting?

Gret decided not to exert himself in this laborious task.

Actually, if he really gritted his teeth and tried hard, he might not be unable to move it. After all, his original body was a level one warrior, with strength and combat ability far superior to that of a commoner. But why should he?

I'm a mage!

I'm an elegant mage!

I've already changed my profession; I'm not a warrior or a physical-type job anymore!

I should just wave my wand and chant spells. Anything heavier than five pounds, which a mage's hand can't lift, should be left for others to carry!

He took a step back, giving up his position, and gestured for the white-haired elder to grasp the two broken ends. With such a powerful figure who could carry a person in one hand and run as fast as the wind, why should I exert myself!

The magical light shone brightly. Gret placed his hands on the elder's, gently pushing and pulling, guiding the elder's strength while giving continuous commands:

"Forward a bit, a bit more, good, pull back your right hand, no, move back a bit, good! Align it! Slowly bring them closer, closer! Stop! Wait a moment!"

The muscles in the old man's arm subtly tensed. He turned his head and gave Gret a strange look.

Gret smiled sheepishly at him.

The duration of the Detect Magic spell had ended…

This spell was too short. Depending on the mage's level, it could only last 1 minute per level. Gret, being a mage apprentice, was considered 0.5 level, so his Detect Magic spell only lasted 30 seconds…

Gret took a few breaths, closed his eyes, and focused, recasting the spell. The magical light shone again, illuminating the broken bones in his meditative vision, guiding the bone setting. Gret pushed and pulled with his hands, giving commands, and the white-haired elder cooperated fully. Finally, before the next 30 seconds ended, they managed to reset the broken tibia and fibula completely.

"Done…"

Gret let go and plopped to the ground. The consequences of casting four spells in a short time finally showed: his forehead throbbed, his head buzzed, and his temples ached. Gret closed his eyes to rest, but then he heard the old man exclaim in surprise:

"Perfectly aligned!—How did you do that?"

"I can see… with magic…"

Gret answered weakly. He immediately heard the next question: "What's next? What should we do?"

Gret really wanted to say, "Just cast a healing spell, don't bother me." But the patient was lying there, and the more precise the treatment, the better the prognosis. He couldn't help but struggle to give instructions. Gret opened his eyes, sat up with effort, and leaned in to look:

"Wait a moment…"

Fortunately, the duration of the Mage's Hand spell hadn't ended. Gret mustered his strength and continued to manipulate the spell. Soon, the two large blood vessels were slowly pulled together and joined.

Gret turned his head and nodded at the white-haired elder:

"Connect these two blood vessels."

"Huh, you're…"

The old man was full of surprise. He leaned in for a closer look and even touched them lightly:

"…Mage's Hand? Used like this?"

"Yes." Gret smiled modestly. "It's convenient and clean." He didn't have to carry and pre-sterilize forceps!

The old man repeated "convenient, clean" several times, then pointed. A beam of white light shot from his fingertip and landed on the blood vessels. The millimeter-thick vessels instantly healed. Gret released the Mage's Hand, and soon, bright red blood flowed through them.

That's it… I can't connect the nerves…

Gret sighed inwardly. He continued to give instructions: "Align the bones inside… Yes, be precise with the healing spell, fix the bones first, let me check… No problem, then wait, let me sort out the muscles…"

Mage's Hand! Engage!

The semi-transparent, intangible hands raised again, carefully combing through the muscles.

The damaged muscles, pierced by bone fragments, were sorted one by one. Gret and the white-haired elder worked in perfect harmony. For each muscle he separated, the elder cast a healing spell. After sorting all of them, Gret closed his eyes, and his back slumped again:

"Done… All—completed!"

Without waiting for him to say anything, the old man cast another white light, healing the damaged skin. He then touched the injured leg, pressing left and right, growing increasingly surprised:

"The consumption of the healing spell was reduced by half!—How did you do that?"

"Manual bone setting, breaking down the task…" Gret's voice grew weaker, his speech slurred, and he looked ready to fall asleep. Even as he swayed, he didn't forget to remind the old man:

"Remember to cast a few healing spells on his chest and abdomen. Falling from such a height, I'm worried about internal injuries… A physical examination can't reveal everything…"

The old man followed his advice. A few healing spells later, the patient was revitalized and sat up without support. As soon as his leg touched the ground, he screamed:

"Ah!!!"

Gret was immediately startled awake! He rushed over and, with the strength of a level one warrior, managed to get in front of the elder and grab the patient to check him over. After a moment, he relaxed:

"Nothing serious, just an injury to the foot. Most likely a calcaneus fracture… Another healing spell should do it."

Another fracture? The elder paused in casting the healing spell:

"Can you still see the fracture?"

Gret's face fell. He looked up at the old man weakly:

"I'm out of spells…"

Gret's current mental power allowed him to cast five zero-level spells a day. He had already used them all: three variations of the Detect Magic spell (X-ray), one Mage's Hand, and one magical trick. To cast another, his only option was:

Wait until tomorrow.

Oh, and get eight hours of sleep tonight.

…So, being a mage really isn't a profession for staying up late. Thank goodness, no 996 work schedule needed.

Used up?

A hint of a smile flashed in the old man's eyes. The information he had received earlier indicated that this young man was still a mage apprentice, and a newly made one at that. After five consecutive magical fluctuations, it was indeed clear that he was out of spells and couldn't cast any more…

He pulled a small bottle from his belt. After some thought, he put it back and reached into his pocket, pulling out another one and offering it to Gret:

"Just one drop."

A small bottle, about the length of a finger and the thickness of a thumb. Gret took it and examined it: the bottle was sealed with a wooden stopper, and the liquid inside shimmered with a greenish glow, looking quite beautiful. But it's green! Healing potions are red, and mana potions are blue. What is this green one?

Is it poison?!

He looked at the old man for help, but got no answer. He pulled the stopper and cautiously sniffed the air around the bottle. A cool, refreshing scent hit him, making his nose tingle, almost causing him to sneeze.

…It doesn't seem to be poison?

And, his mind feels a bit clearer!

Gret's eyes lit up. He followed the old man's instructions, carefully tilting the bottle and trying to drink just one drop. …With such a small dose, why not give me a dropper? Just pouring it into my mouth, it's easy to drink it all in one go!

A drop of coolness exploded on his tongue, quickly spreading. It filled his mouth, rushed up his nose, and spread to his brain. Gret shivered, and the fatigue and dizziness from casting spells were instantly washed away.

"I'm good to go!" He jumped up: "Hold his foot, get ready, I'll cast the spell!"

In the meditative environment, the bright magical light shone again.

Gret worked with the elder to reset the patient's calcaneus and completed the treatment. The patient and his family were extremely grateful, but the elder didn't care, pulling Gret through a few turns to escape the crowd. Seeing that Gret was very cooperative in following him, the elder patted his shoulder in satisfaction and asked with a smile:

"Are you the child who received the divine inspiration of the God of Nature?"
