Inside the house, after Tang Huan shut the door, she lowered her head and leapt into Song Mo’s arms who stood in front of her. “Uncle, I’m so sad…”
Only then did Song Mo realize that the coldness and ruthlessness she had shown just now was just a pretense.
He wrapped his hands around her and soothed her in a low voice, “Cry if you want to. You’ll feel better after that.”
Tang Huan snickered. Your niece didn’t want to cry at all. She simply wanted to hug you.
Dong Minghua walked away soullessly.
Song Mo didn’t have a lot of time to console his niece. The Song family’s five- mu wheat fields were already ripe and needed to be harvested before it was too late.
After saying a few words of comfort to Tang Huan, he packed his things and prepared to go out.
Tang Huan didn’t want to work in the fields, but she needed to be closer to Song Mo, so she put on a straw hat and volunteered to go with him. “Uncle, it’s too much work to do on your own. Let me go with you. The more of us work in the fields, the faster the work can be done. It would be bad if it rains within the next few days.”
In the past, the harvesting of the Song family’s wheat field had been done by Father Song, Song Mo, and Dong Minghua. Even when they worked from morning to night, it still took them two and a half days to finish harvesting. Now that it was just Song Mo, he’d probably need more than five or six days. If Tang Huan didn’t follow along, wouldn’t the days be wasted? Even if she would only laze around in the fields, she still had to go.
It was hot in the summer. Although it was still early in the morning, just a few minutes in the sun could make one sweat, and it would only get worse two hours later. Looking at his niece’s fair and tender face, Song Mo couldn’t bear to see her suffer. “I don’t need your help. Uncle can finish the job alone. The afternoon sun is too strong, and your skin will become tanned. Be a good girl and stay at home. You can just come over to send me lunch at noon.”
“I’m not afraid of getting tanned.” Tang Huan said, lowering her head. “I’m not getting married anyway. So what if my skin darkened?” She walked up to him and tugged at his sleeve as she begged him quietly, “Uncle, just let me go with you. I’m afraid of being alone at home. Don’t worry, if I get tired, I’ll rest even if you don’t tell me to.”
Song Mo stared at his niece’s small hands. Were such delicate and fair hands strong enough to pull wheat up by the roots?
But because she had such a pitiful tone, and he remembered how timid she was, he compromised. “All right, then. You can come with Uncle, but you have to listen to Uncle at the field. Understand?”
“Mhm,” Tang Huan cheerfully replied, “Jinzhi listens to everything Uncle says.”
So the uncle and niece carried some drinking water using a waterskin 1 , locked the door, and went to the fields together.
Tang Huan had said such nice words despite the fact that she had never harvested wheat before. Even Jinzhi only assisted in picking up wheat ears in the field before she was ten years old. After she had grown up, Father Song had treasured her at home. When she arrived in the field, she leaned in close to Song Mo as he taught her how to pull wheat. The movements were quite simple, so she was able to learn it quickly. She began working while remaining close to Song Mo. Fortunately, she had done some labor work of carrying water and chopping wood in the previous dream, so pulling wheat seemed like a breeze!
Tang Huan was pleased with herself, but when she stopped to wipe her sweat, she discovered that Song Mo had left her far behind.
How could she get close to him like this!
Song Mo happened to turn around and saw her standing with one hand on her waist and the other on her forehead. He thought that she was tired and hurriedly called her to sit in the shade under the tree.
Tang Huan did not answer him, simply staring at him from a distance.
Only people in the city were concerned with appropriate attire. In this small mountain village, apart from some deep-rooted and insurmountable rules, such as uncles couldn’t marry their nieces, other restrictions on clothing, food, shelter, transportation, and the relationship between men and women were not too harsh. The young ladies from wealthy families were unable to leave their houses easily, and they couldn’t even see the faces of their fiancés before their weddings. However, fifteen or sixteen-year-old village girls were frequently seen working in the fields or washing clothes beside rivers. When they saw a boy they liked, they would wink and exchange flirty glances with them, and it was even okay to occasionally exchange a few words in secret.
Therefore, during the busy farming season, men could roll up their sleeves or even wear sleeveless sweatshirts to work because of the heat without worrying women would come over and scold them for acting like hooligans!
Song Mo was dressed in a short brown coarse cloth shirt with his sleeves rolled up today, revealing his sturdy arms.
Tang Huan thought of an idea and ran towards the man with short, mincing steps.
Song Mo watched her approach him with puzzlement. “What’s the matter?” Under her dark yellow straw hat, her cheeks were red, and the hair on her temples was slightly wet, but she didn’t look ugly at all, but rather like a ripe peach. His heart skipped a beat and he hurriedly averted his gaze.
Tang Huan came to a halt five or six steps away from him and asked, embarrassingly, while staring at the ground, “Uncle, sha-shall I help you tie the wheat stalks? You’ll pull and I’ll tie…”
Song Mo was surprised, and then he understood that his niece had no more energy to pull out wheat.
He gave a considerate smile. “It’s fine. You can go to rest. Mhm, it’s getting pretty late now. Perhaps you can go back home and cook.”
Tang Huan kept her head lowered without saying anything, refusing to leave.
Song Mo couldn’t win against her, so he agreed to let her follow him and bundle the wheat stalks.
Tang Huan deliberately stood on his side and stared at him. When he leaned down, she stared at his stern profile, bare neck, sturdy arms, smooth waist and legs, and upturned buttocks. Looking at his long legs and perky butt, she really wanted to grope them!
She spent a long time admiring the view in front of her in silence. When she was watching the seductive action of Song Mo tilting his head to drink water during a short break, Tang Huan suddenly found her conscience. It seemed unfair for her to take so much advantage of Song Mo with her eyes.
“Uncle, I’d like to drink some water as well.” She got to her feet and asked him for the waterskin.
Song Mo smiled and handed it to her.
Tang Huan took it from him and tilted her head in the same manner as Song Mo, but instead of turning sideways, she faced him.
She was wearing an old shirt. The originally white shirt had turned dark yellow and was too small. When she raised her hand, her bulging chest appeared even larger. Song Mo’s gaze wandered over there unintentionally, and his face became hot. Just as he was about to turn around, Tang Huan’s hand shook and spilled half of the water on her clothes. The clear water quickly spread, and soon her thin shirt became soaked, causing them to stick on her chest, completely exposing the shape of one of her bosoms, while the other was also faintly visible.
Song Mo’s lower body tightened.
As if it had seen the alluring scenery with its own eyes, Little Song Mo looked up enthusiastically.
