Chapter 3

4 min read978 words

The breakdown of the spoils is as follows: one longsword, one spear, one set of bows, two daggers, one greatsword, one battle axe, and one short sword. The armor consists of four leather armors, two shields, and four mantles.

“Kyuun (Mazu)”

“Kwaau, Kwara Waoa Waoa! (Hey, don’t go licking the spear tips!)”

One of them, tasting iron for the first time, has an indescribable look on its face.

Surely, they don’t not know how to use weapons, right? These aren’t food, my friend... No, the kobolds in the village use spears with obsidian tips, so they should be fine.

In any case, we return to the nearby forest and demonstrate the use of weapons during our usual hunting.

“Guru, Kwan (Over there, it’s coming)”

“Wafu, Guruah!! (Ah, leave it to me!!)”

I charge from the side where my companion has driven the boar and swing the longsword with all my might.

“Bwoah!? Bwo... Ohh”

The boar, with a large wound in its belly, tries to stand firm but eventually loses its strength and slowly collapses to the ground.

“Kwaan♪ (Feast♪)”

“Kya♪ (We did it♪)”

Everyone approaches with joyful cries, but before sharing the meat, we first distribute the weapons. I step between my companions, who are too instinct-driven, and the prey, raise the longsword, and point the blade at the boar’s wound.

“Ku? (Huh?)”

One of them notices the sharp edge and becomes interested.

(Good, good, you’re getting it!)

I hand the sword back to its sheath and give it to that one, then take the battle axe and cut off the boar’s leg to demonstrate its cutting power before passing the crude weapon to another one.

“Uu, Kuao (Uu, dangerous)”

The one who was startled by the clean cut takes the battle axe hesitantly, and I perform a test cut with the greatsword and hand it to the strongest male of the same age.

“Ofa... (It’s heavy...)”

Finally, I use the daggers to butcher the boar, and we all enjoy our evening meal.

“Kyu~ (Happy~)”

“Kwaan (Full)”

After finishing the boar meat, my childhood friends lie down happily. I scold them.

“Guro, Guragaoa!! (You guys, don’t get complacent!!)”

The training on equipment is not yet over, and next, I need to make them wear armor. Even I, a former mercenary, feel an indescribable discomfort with the leather armor, and I’m curious about their reactions.

(They’ve only ever worn loincloths...)

In any case, I need to be strict here. I stand up the one with the greatsword, known as Buster, and punch his chest.

“Gura, Garo! (Captain, what are you doing!?)”

I force the leather armor onto the pained Buster and punch his chest again. Buster tenses his body to brace for the impact...

“Ku, Wafon? (Huh, it doesn’t hurt?)”

Buster, tilting his head and looking between me and the leather armor, understands the importance of armor. To make sure my sister understands, I lightly punch her chest in the same way.

“Wafa!? Ku, Kwaon!! (It hurts!? N, Brother!!)”

Because I’ve been rather gentle with my sister, she’s confused by the punch, but I force the leather armor onto her and punch her chest again.

“Wau, Kuwafon? (Hey, it doesn’t hurt much?)”

It seems she understands the meaning of armor.

Next, I equip the shield to the one with the longsword, known as Blazer, and the one with the battle axe, known as Axe, and have them block my punches in a sparring format to learn how to use the shield.

Finally, I give the mantles to my sister and the other female, as well as to Blazer and Buster, resulting in the following formation:

Name: Buster (Male)

Race: Kobold

Weapon: Greatsword

Armor: Leather Armor

Accessory: Mantle

Name: Dagger (Female: Sister)

Race: Kobold

Weapon: Dagger (Main) Dagger (Secondary)

Armor: Leather Armor

Accessory: Mantle

Name: Blazer (Male)

Race: Kobold

Weapon: Longsword

Armor: Shield

Accessory: Mantle

Name: Axe (Male)

Race: Kobold

Weapon: Battle Axe

Armor: Shield

Accessory: None

Name: Lancer (Female)

Race: Kobold

Weapon: Spear

Armor: Leather Armor

Accessory: Mantle

Name: Archer (Male: Me)

Race: Kobold

Weapon: Bow (Main) Short Sword (Secondary)

Armor: Leather Armor

Accessory: None

Why did I choose the bow?

Because no one else could use it!

I don’t feel confident in hitting the mark either...

“Garwoon! Gura Wauwoon! (The bow is just for show! The big shots don’t understand!!)”

... More practice is needed than idle talk.

Thus, equipped, we not only train in hand-to-hand combat but also use wooden swords and spears made from obsidian knives. During this time, I practice with the bow and arrow to improve my skills to a decent level.

About two months after acquiring the weapons, I stand at the top of the village with a group of five companions who stand out among the thirty or so kobolds, and our hunting results are excellent. The second in command is the recently prominent Buster, and the third is my sister, Dagger.

At this time, we are two years and two months old.

Incidentally, no one in the group knows how long kobolds live. They simply disappear without returning from a hunt when their strength wanes. Nevertheless, recently, kobolds around three to four years old are also training individually.

With their help, my companions and I take on the role of protecting the young kobolds, around one year old, and the newborns, aiming to improve the living standards and defense capabilities of the village.

While the status system in the story may be controversial, it does make things easier to understand, doesn’t it?
