Chapter 7: A Rather Perverted Wolf

4 min read993 words

Wang Yu followed the direction indicated in the quest log, heading towards Wolf Mountain from the village entrance. Along the way, the rabbits all looked at him with wary eyes, this guy who had once harmed many of their companions. However, due to the system, they were not aggressive monsters and would not attack players unless provoked. They could only glare at Wang Yu as he ran towards Wolf Mountain.

Wang Yu now felt the benefit of his agility, which significantly increased his travel speed!

As he approached a mountain, Wang Yu heard several wolf howls. He instinctively adjusted the system volume and continued towards his destination. When he finally reached the foot of Wolf Mountain, Wang Yu couldn't help but marvel at the game company's powerful virtual technology, though it was followed by a wave of dizziness.

Wolves roamed the mountain paths in small groups. The wolves near the foot of the mountain were more scattered, some wandering lazily around the main path. A signpost by the side of the mountain path read "Wolf Mountain," though it was clearly worn and broken, adding a chilling atmosphere.

Although the game company made the environment very realistic, they were still considerate enough not to fully virtualize the entities. After all, the death of creatures in the game turned them into white light. Otherwise, it would be more like a horror movie. The creatures in the game also had some virtual blurring, making them less terrifying and realistic, constantly reminding players that they were in a game. This was an improvement over the online novels from a few years ago, where if the monsters in those fantasies became fully real, players would probably faint just from looking at them.

However, even with the game company's blurring, a wolf was still a wolf. Just the sharp, bloodthirsty eyes were enough to make Wang Yu hesitate. "It's just a game, what's there to be afraid of? Wolves exist in real life too!" Wang Yu encouraged himself and began to approach the nearest wolf facing him. "We're just data in a game, what's there to be afraid of? This is an adventure that can't happen in real life!" Wang Yu decided to take the risk.

As Wang Yu approached the nearest wolf, he began to estimate the distance to determine the wolf's active attack range.

"12 steps!"

"11 steps!"

"10 steps!" Wang Yu silently counted the steps between him and the wolf. The wolf watched Wang Yu approach but, due to the system, could not initiate an attack from a distance. Wang Yu counted the steps while the wolf calculated the distance to the intruder. It was a gray wolf with no special features, except for its name, "Bloodthirsty Wolf," which was displayed in silver, not the red that indicated aggressive monsters.

"8 steps!" When Wang Yu mentally counted to 8 steps, a sense of danger washed over him, and the wolf launched an attack!

Wang Yu didn't dodge, thinking there was no need to. "It's just a game, what difference does dodging make? The data is there, and dodging should be determined by my agility," he thought. The pain setting in the game was very low, so being attacked by the wolf wasn't very painful, just a reminder that he was being attacked.

Wang Yu's goal was simple: to determine how much damage he could inflict on the wolf, how much damage the wolf could inflict on him, and the wolf's health points. Knowing these would help him figure out how long it would take to defeat the wolf, even though it still looked a bit scary...

In a flash, the wolf's attack arrived. A gray shadow passed before his eyes, and Wang Yu felt a chill at the back of his neck...

"−20!" A critical hit!? Can monsters deal critical damage? Wang Yu was taken aback. His reaction wasn't slow, and he turned to strike with his dagger, but instead of dealing damage, it showed a big "miss." The wolf had nimbly dodged the attack. Wang Yu was stunned and could only stand there, waiting for his attack cooldown to end.

"−20!" Another critical hit!? The wolf circled around and attacked his back again. Wang Yu felt helpless, and the second critical hit made him realize something. When the second miss appeared, Wang Yu understood that data wasn't always reliable. His mind raced, trying to figure out the problem.

Wang Yu began to observe the wolf's movements more closely. After completing its attack, the wolf started to move sideways, still staring at him. Wang Yu's body instinctively followed the wolf's movements, but the wolf didn't initiate another attack. Wang Yu suddenly realized that monsters had their own attack cooldowns. He had been in a stalemate with the wolf for nearly 10 seconds, so why hadn't it attacked a third time?

Just as he was distracted, the wolf attacked again. Thanks to his high agility and previous experience, Wang Yu managed to dodge the wolf's attack on his neck, only getting bitten on the hand. His dagger struck the wolf, and the numbers "−5" and "−15" appeared. Wang Yu was pleased and began to calculate the data. His physical defense was 11 points (3 from constitution, 3 from level, and 5 from equipment), so the wolf's physical attack was around 16. His physical attack was also 16 (6 from strength, 3 from level, and 1 from the dagger), indicating that the wolf's physical defense was only 1. This meant that in a one-on-one fight, he would almost certainly win.

But why? Wang Yu fell into deep thought again. Clearly, this wasn't the time for deep thought. Another wolf howl snapped him out of it. The wolf also seemed to think this wasn't a good place for thinking and decided to give this human a place to think things over.
