And just as I stepped out of the castle, I was stopped.
"Ryuya, lend me your face for a moment."
"Riber?"
This guy, who had been thrown into Avignon, had already returned.
He's tougher than I thought.
"Got some catching up to do after five years, right? How about a one-on-one without any interruptions?"
"Mr. Ryuya, this guy is definitely up to something!"
Noem immediately interjected, and I could sense a certain strength in his words.
You've grown, Noem...
But...
"Alright, I'll go with you."
"Mr. Ryuya?!"
"Sorry, Noem, but this guy is an old acquaintance. We've even helped each other to survive in the past."
I can't lie about those memories.
Even if this guy isn't the same as he used to be, there are still things that need to be addressed.
"Avignon, take care of Noem while I'm gone. Anything can happen, you know."
"Leave it to me. With me around, anything is possible."
As expected of a demon spirit with a level in the ten thousands, his words carry weight.
And so, Riber and I set off alone, moving away from the crowded areas.

"This is... the back of the castle, right?"
A tall castle wall loomed on one side, casting a shadow that made it dark.
It must be dim here both day and night. The darkness naturally keeps people away, and there was no sign of anyone else around us.
"Brings back memories. When we were kids, we used to sleep in places like this."
"Being orphans, we had no home to go back to. We were always hungry and miserable. I'd never go back to that wretched life, no matter what."
When old friends meet after a long time, they naturally start reminiscing.
"The Blessing Ceremony saved me from that extreme poverty. It gave me a skill, something of value, even though I had no parents, no home, and no education. Thanks to that, my life was saved."
"The last time I saw you was at the Blessing Ceremony. How have you been since then?"
"You looked like a stray dog, pitiful and pathetic, at the Blessing Ceremony."
Riber's voice carried a mocking tone.
From his casual words and actions, a stench of corruption that he couldn't hide wafted through the air.
"How are Zeta and Cidroad doing? I assume they were also taken in?"
"Don't know. Apparently, our skill compatibilities were different, so we were separated right away. I ended up in the Hero Training Facility, a place that rigorously trains those with skills suited for direct combat with demons."
Riber apparently survived the harsh selection process.
Not everyone who enters the training facility becomes a hero; those deemed 'hopeless' after repeated tests are immediately discarded.
"And I finally became a hero! Isn't that amazing? A parentless kid from the back alleys, a hero! All thanks to having the best skill! Hail skills! With skills, you can do anything!"
Riber's path is a success story that anyone would envy.
If you're given a good skill, you can become a hero and a success, regardless of your past.
I used to dream of such a future too.
Until I was labeled as 'skill-less.'
"But my ambition doesn't end there. I've obtained the world's best skill. I need to secure a position befitting it. For that, I need to marry the princess of this country."
"You still haven't given up on that?"
"Of course not! Here's where I need your help, Ryuya. Help me get closer to Princess Reslaser."
Riber said this casually, as if my assistance was a given.
"Aren't you in good with the king? Use your connections to introduce me to the princess. To be honest, I haven't even seen her face yet."
What kind of nerve does he have to propose marriage without even knowing what the princess looks like?
No wonder he didn't notice Reslaser standing right next to me in the audience chamber.
"If I marry the princess, I might become king in the future. No, I'll become king, even if I have to assassinate all the other princes! For that, Reslaser has to be my wife. ...I'll put up with her even if she's a bit ugly, for the sake of it."
"Is that your ultimate goal?"
"Yep. I became a hero and obtained the best skill to become king."
How many skills does one need to be granted to become this arrogant?
I've seen others become arrogant due to a misunderstanding of their skills' capabilities, but Riber is in a league of his own.
Was he always like this?
Was he this corrupt and foul-smelling even when we were together?
"Come on, Ryuya. Help me out as an old friend. A 'skill-less' guy like you can be of use to a hero. Isn't that a great opportunity?"
"Is that how you ask for help?"
"What are you talking about? I'm giving you value. A 'skill-less' guy like you, who has no value, can be of use to a hero. I'm actually doing you a favor."
Riber suddenly remembered something and said, "Oh, right. That little girl you brought, she apparently has a great skill. Something like 'Alchemical King,' which you don't see even in the church. She could be useful, so I'll take her. And that female ghost too, she seems interesting."
One after another.
How much of a personality breakdown does it take to spout such nonsense?
"Anyway, you're not worthy of them. A 'skill-less' guy like you. Having you around will only make them miserable. I'll take better care of them. After all, I'm a hero!"
Then he started laughing maniacally.
Just as I had my five years, he had his.
It's enough time for a person to change. But can someone change so drastically, to the point of being unrecognizable?
"You've changed, Riber. In just five years, you've become a piece of trash."
"Huh?"
"The old you didn't have that corrupt look. You spoke normally. Even though we were poor, you had a much cleaner expression."
What about now?
It's as if you sold your humanity to the devil in exchange for skills.
"The old you, without skills, was better. Getting skills has made you worse. You're trash now."
"......What did you say?"
Riber's voice changed.
It was emotionless, but filled with killing intent.
"Better without skills? Worsened by getting skills? Are you an idiot? No, you must be an idiot. Idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot...!"
"......?"
"An idiot wouldn't say something like that. You're an idiot because you don't understand the value of skills. You're a worthless piece of trash, 'skill-less' and an idiot. You have no right to live!!"
Oh?
"I'll kill you! I'll kill you! I'm a hero!! Don't mock my skills!! Die, you piece of shit!! I'll kill you, I'll kill youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
