**Another fortune-telling session!**
Zhao Yu couldn't help but feel a bit anxious, wondering what kind of adventure the system would bring him this time. He quickly reviewed the rewards he had received yesterday, and the hidden listening device was still there! There was no doubt that this thing was for eavesdropping, and it wouldn't be detected by any anti-surveillance equipment. It was definitely a good tool.
Zhao Yu hurriedly ran back to the office. Unlike last night, the office was no longer bustling with activity; only a few agents were working in their cubicles. Liu Changhu, Qu Ping, and others were not around.
Seeing Zhao Yu arrive, the few agents couldn't help but cast him strange glances. After all, Zhao Yu's behavior yesterday was quite unusual. The usually gentle and soft-spoken young man had turned into a rough and violent thug, solving the electric baton case single-handedly, which was truly incomprehensible.
Zhao Yu ignored them and went straight to his desk to turn on his computer.
His neighbors were Zhang Jingfeng and Liang Huan, who were responsible for investigating long-standing unsolved cases. These cases referred to those that had occurred a long time ago and had yet to be solved. They were part of the major crimes unit, so these cases were all significant, involving either robberies or murders.
Due to the long time that had passed, many pieces of evidence and witnesses had disappeared, making these cases extremely difficult to solve. Some cases had been unsolved for two or three decades, with no leads at all.
Because of this, the long-standing unsolved cases unit had become a headache, and no one wanted to be transferred there. Not only was the investigation and fieldwork exhausting and fruitless, but the pressure from the higher-ups was also immense. If they failed to complete their tasks on time, they might even face disciplinary action.
Zhang Jingfeng and Liang Huan were also a pair of unfortunate colleagues. Due to various reasons, they were assigned to this unit this year.
At that moment, the two were staring at a stack of photos and some case files, looking worried.
While waiting for his computer to start, Zhao Yu curiously glanced over. He saw that the photos were all of bloody corpses!
"Bro, who's this guy? So惨?" Zhao Yu asked casually.
"Um..."
Zhao Yu's casual and rough tone made it hard for the two to accept.
"Um..." Zhang Jingfeng spoke first, "This is the murder case from the Fumin neighborhood ten years ago! The victim was brutally killed, with over forty stab wounds!"
"Oh?"
Although the computer had already started, Zhao Yu became interested and took the photos to examine them closely.
"This case was quite sensational at the time," Liang Huan explained, "The victim was a jobless loafer who gambled. He might have owed a lot of money to loan sharks. When he was killed, the walls were covered with messages like 'pay back your debts' and 'blood for blood.' The brutality of the crime led to it being called the H* Gang Murder Case!"
"Right!" Zhang Jingfeng agreed, "The crime scene was extremely gruesome. The victim's blood covered the entire room, and his wife went insane because of it! After the incident, half the residents of the Fumin neighborhood moved out, and the government had to revise the urban planning and demolish the area!"
"Oh..." Zhao Yu looked at the photos seriously and asked, "If it caused such a stir, why hasn't the case been solved yet?"
"Ah!" Zhang Jingfeng sighed helplessly, "If the case had been solved, we wouldn't be suffering like this today! At the time, the police department mobilized almost all its resources, conducting day and night investigations, and even raided several criminal dens. But strangely, they found no clues to the killer! The case remained unsolved, becoming a thorn in Captain Jin's side!"
"Now," Liang Huan said, "The neighborhood has been demolished, and we have nothing but these photos and incomplete case files. Where do we even start investigating? This is essentially a dead case!"
"Because it's been ten years, the higher-ups want us to investigate this case specially," Zhang Jingfeng sighed, "If we can't solve it, we might end up directing traffic!"
"Right, Old Zhang!" Liang Huan said with a bitter smile, "We might as well practice for that!" He made a motion as if slapping something, "I'll start by issuing parking tickets to all the cars that illegally park in front of my building!"
"Ha ha ha..." Zhang Jingfeng couldn't help but laugh foolishly, making the same motion.
"Hey..." Zhao Yu, with a raised nose, looked at them and then held up one of the photos, "Bro, I have a few words to say, but I'm not sure if I should..."
"Go ahead, say it!" Zhang Jingfeng gestured, "We've already resigned ourselves to our fate!"
"Um..." Zhao Yu frowned, "I think the H* Gang Murder Case is not valid, at least the name is wrong!"
"What?" The two were quite surprised, staring at each other.
"You have a misunderstanding. Real gangs don't operate like that!" Zhao Yu pointed at the photos and analyzed, "Think about it. If you two owed me a lot of money, would I try to force you to pay it back, or would I just kill you?"
"Well..." Liang Huan pouted, "Of course, I'd try to force you to pay it back!"
"Exactly!" Zhao Yu said, "Gangs are all about money. They wouldn't risk a murder charge. Even if the victim owed millions or billions, they wouldn't kill him!
"We have a saying, oh, no! The gangs have a saying, 'The more reckless you are, the faster you die.' Cutting someone with over forty wounds is clearly an attempt to make the crime look bigger. Making the crime bigger is only bad for them.
"Actually, when they spray paint on walls, break windows, and threaten women and children, they just want the debtors to pay up. If you kill the person, where do you get the money from?"
"Right... right?" Zhang Jingfeng's eyes lit up, "Why didn't I think of that?"
"So..." Liang Huan pondered, "The police's investigation direction was wrong? It wasn't done by a gang? Brother, what do you think?"
"Over forty wounds..." Zhao Yu pondered, "Killing someone only takes one stab, but the killer made over forty. I guess either the killer had a deep grudge against the victim, or the killer deliberately made so many cuts to mislead the police, to make it look like a gang did it, which is called a red herring!"
"Oh... that makes sense..." Zhang Jingfeng pondered, "But the records show that the victim was a jobless loafer with a bad temper, who had many enemies and didn't get along with his neighbors and relatives. Investigating this is still... difficult..."
"Um... is the victim's wife still around?" Zhao Yu suddenly asked, "Is she still insane?"
"Oh... no!" Liang Huan recalled the records and answered, "She remarried and has a child, and she's doing quite well!"
"Then you should go and investigate her. She should know about the victim's enemies. If she doesn't know, then you can start issuing parking tickets!" Zhao Yu turned back to his desk and said, "Maybe she has some connection to the killer!"
"What... what?" Liang Huan almost knelt before Zhao Yu, "You mean..."
"Over forty wounds, it could be a crime of passion!" Zhao Yu typed in a search for rental information on his computer, "You might as well investigate, anyway..."
Before Zhao Yu could finish, Zhang Jingfeng and Liang Huan had already run out of the office in a hurry.
Zhao Yu shook his head and sighed to himself, "Anyway... these are the kind of melodramatic plots you see in TV shows..."
