Chapter 9

4 min read899 words

It has been two weeks since Tsukimaru Shirai encountered ITEM. Tsukimaru has been living a life that revolves around school, the 177th branch of the Disciplinary Committee, and a certain high school, as if nothing had happened. As for the evenings? After much consideration, for the safety of Teito Saten, Tsukimaru moved out and rented a house to live together with her.

Though Tsukimaru could buy a better house, he still liked the cozy feeling of this small house. The two of them lived in that tiny house, cooking and eating together, living together. At night, the two also slept together. However, they were still young, so it was just living together.

One day, after Tsukimaru finished school, at the entrance of a certain high school, he saw a person. She wore only a chest wrap and a jacket, which seemed to be the uniform of Kiryujo Girls' Academy, and had red hair in twin-tails with a very short skirt.

"Finally, Aleister Crowley." Tsukimaru knew that the seemingly delinquent-looking girl in front of him was the legendary "Guide," who specifically leads visitors to Aleister.

"Hey, hey, hey, Tsukimaru, did you see that cute girl at the gate? So tempting." The person next to him, Motoharu Tsuchimikado, who always adds "nya" at the end of his sentences, is Tsukimaru's classmate. He looks like a beach bum but is actually a double agent serving both the magic side and the science side, working for Aleister and the faraway Lola Stuart in Britain.

Motoharu Tsuchimikado recognized the girl in front of him, Dan Shiizaki. After all, both of them worked for Aleister Crowley, the supreme ruler of the city, and he had been led by Dan Shiizaki to meet Aleister. But as a spy, he couldn't say anything and had to act like his usual self.

"Yeah." Tsukimaru looked at the two people who would later work together in a covert department, and a slight smile appeared on his lips. "I wonder what she's here for?"

While the two were chatting, Dan Shiizaki had already walked over. Looking at the person in front of her, with white hair and a handsome, resolute face, she wondered, "What does the boss want with him?" Although she was curious, Dan Shiizaki knew she shouldn't think too much; sometimes the more you know, the sooner you die.

"Sir, someone wants to see you," Dan Shiizaki said straightforwardly, stating her purpose. She had already seen Motoharu Tsuchimikado but could ignore him. After all, under Aleister's "care," no one could do anything out of line.

"Is that so? Alright, I'll go with you," Tsukimaru said with a smile. "I hope it doesn't disappoint."

As for Motoharu Tsuchimikado, he had already been ignored.

Soon, the two arrived in front of the building in the 7th District, which had no doors or windows. Dan Shiizaki took Tsukimaru's hand and used her Level 4 Teleportation ability to bring him into the lair of Aleister Crowley, the founder and true ruler of Academy City.

Waving for Dan Shiizaki to leave, Tsukimaru looked up at the scene in front of him.

The space here was so vast that it could hardly be called an indoor area, and there were no lighting fixtures. However, the room was filled with star-like lights because countless screens and buttons were set on the walls, emitting light. Tens of thousands of cables and pipes, extending from various instruments of all sizes, spread across the floor like blood vessels, all converging in the center of the room.

In the center of the room was a huge test tube.

A cylindrical container made of reinforced glass, four meters in diameter and over ten meters long, was filled with a red liquid.

It was said that the color represented a weakly alkaline culture medium.

Inside the test tube, a person in a green surgical gown floated upside down.

There were no adjectives to describe him other than "human." This silver-haired "human" looked both male and female, both adult and child, both saint and prisoner.

Was it that he had achieved all the possibilities that a "human" could pursue, or had he abandoned all the possibilities that a "human" possessed?

Whichever it was, the only thing that could be said for sure was that only the word "human" could describe him.

"Everyone who comes here carefully observes me and reacts the same way as you—"

The "human" in the test tube spoke. His voice sounded both male and female, both adult and child, both saint and prisoner.

"—but why should a human do what a machine can do?"

Ps: This chapter is a bit short, so I'll say a few words. This is my first time writing a novel online. My writing skills are non-existent; the plot is rough; and the character portrayal is poor. Despite these flaws, I still wrote and published this novel, not for any other reason, but to share my thoughts with everyone. There may be various flaws, and I welcome any corrections. I will humbly accept all reasonable suggestions, provided I can implement them. If you want me to improve my writing... I don't think that's possible in the short term.
