0. The Troubled Part-timer in Another World
There's something called a "tier key" on the convenience store POS system.
It's not really complicated; it's just a button that you press differently depending on the customer's age group. For otaku, there are buttons for young boys and young girls. For school meals, you press the middle or high school student button, and if they look young, you press the young adult button. If they look somewhat old, you press the older adult button, and if they look very old, you press the senior citizen button. If they don't look like they're from Korea, you press the foreigner button. In the last case, you don't need to worry about their age.
Actually, the calculation works fine no matter which button you press, but there are times when you need to follow this rule, such as when selling cigarettes or children's transportation cards. When selling cigarettes, you can't press the child or middle/high school student buttons, and when selling children's transportation cards, it's the opposite.
That's all there is to it. Otherwise, you don't really need to worry about it. You can press the senior citizen button while selling children's drinks, or the young adult button for foreigners. After all, black and white guys are still young adults, right?
Still, I was planning to follow this rule this time because the store manager told me to press the appropriate button. If I don't do as instructed and something goes wrong, it's my responsibility, right?
But then.
"Can I have a pack of Plus?"
"…How old are you, sir?"
"I just turned 600."
"……"
"Would you like to see my ID?"
What button should I press for a 120cm-tall, blonde twin-tailed kid who claims to be 600 years old?
He looked like a child, spoke like a young woman, had hair like a foreigner, and sounded like an old person. I had no idea which button to press, so I just stared at the kid.
First of all, no matter how I looked at it, he was a blonde twin-tailed kid.
If I were in Korea, I might have said, "Wow, I've had all sorts of strange experiences here," but this kid didn't seem like an ordinary blonde twin-tailed kid. His eyes were red with vertical pupils, and he had a sharp fang protruding from the corner of his mouth.
Moreover, his skin was not just pale but almost bluish. Shouldn't you be going to the hospital instead of buying cigarettes at a convenience store? Dermatology or pediatric psychiatry….
"…Can I see your ID?"
Gathering my wits, I managed to speak, and the blonde twin-tailed kid pulled out an ID from a cute pink pouch and handed it to me. Not one, but three.
"I reincarnated last week, so I don't have my new ID yet. I'll give you my previous ones."
"Excuse me?"
What is this all about?
I took the three IDs he handed me and examined them one by one. The photos were of the kid in front of me, but the years were all different. Moreover, instead of the local police chief's seal, there was a star-shaped stamp.
"…What is this…?"
"Or would you like to see my driver's license?"
At that height, can you even reach the accelerator?
Anyway, I couldn't understand this situation at all, so I told the kid to wait and called the store manager. He had told me to ask if I had any questions.
"Manager, the situation is like this."
A blonde twin-tailed kid with severe hypothermia is asking for cigarettes. I explained briefly in a voice the kid couldn't hear, and the manager replied with three words.
"Excuse me?"
The manager's response was as absurd as the situation. I had no idea why the word "vampire" had come up.
"Vampire…?"
Hearing this, the last bit of my judgment completely disappeared. So I just took out the cigarettes, lit them, and gave them to him.
The kid, holding the cigarettes, suddenly remembered something and asked me.
"Oh, and do you have 300ml blood packs? About 17% alcohol content."
I have no idea. Since I hadn't hung up yet, I asked the manager again.
"Manager, the customer is asking if we have blood packs."
"17%?"
"We don't have them in our store."
"Thank you."
And then he left. I stared at the front door, which the kid or vampire or whatever had opened and left through, and said into the phone.
"Can I quit this job?"
Of course, I can, because I didn't know this place was like this.
