However, in his laboratory, right before his eyes, the abilities Ymir used in his physical form did not alter any known form of energy. According to Ymir's own understanding, which he had gained from some inexplicable source, the "energy" required to activate his abilities came from the negative force generated by his own resentment.
In a combat situation, he could also absorb others' negative emotions to fuel his abilities.
Among these, the power of fear was undoubtedly the most suitable for Ymir to use.
"The power of emotions?" Dr. Connors also acknowledged the various speculations proposed by the psychological community, not denying that human emotions were a form of power, but that it was on a mental level, or even non-existent. Using the power of emotions to influence the laws of the material world was almost an impossible occurrence.
"From the data, I cannot confirm that you indeed possess superpowers," Dr. Connors walked to a silver-white machine and suggested to Ymir, "Mr. Wraith, would you be willing to demonstrate your abilities in front of me again?"
Ymir knew what Dr. Connors was referring to, and he asked, "Doctor, what is the machine behind you?"
"An X-ray full-spectrum scanner," Dr. Connors explained methodically, "a device that uses X-rays to perform a deep and comprehensive scan of the 'target object.' You can think of it as a 'CT' machine in medicine. I want to record the differences in the spectrum when you become invisible."
Ymir had two methods of invisibility. The first was in his physical form, where he used the negative force to cover his body's surface, distorting others' vision to create an illusion, thus making his figure disappear. For example, when Ymir transformed into Freddy's outfit in the sewer, it was also a form of using the negative force to create an illusion.
The second method was to transform into a vengeful ghost, which was inherently formless and intangible, and naturally invisible to the naked eye.
Dr. Connors' previous experiments were not entirely ineffective; at least they proved that the negative force generated by resentment was undetectable by scientific instruments.
So, what about transforming into a vengeful ghost? Would it produce some other variables?
Ymir was also very curious. He slightly raised a thought in his mind and felt a chill. This was the sensation of the negative force filling his body, his body becoming intangible, losing its reflection in the mirror, and floating off the ground.
"Oh, amazing, truly amazing... simply unbelievable..." Dr. Connors collected enough data from where Ymir transformed into a vengeful ghost, performing calculations and comparisons on the computer while muttering, "wonderful... wonderful..."
"Doctor?" Ymir reappeared, asking curiously.
"Completely disappeared, all your vital signs, including your existence, vanished on the X-ray full-spectrum scanner," Dr. Connors shrugged, somewhat incredulously, "from a scientific perspective, I can't even prove your existence."
Dr. Connors was somewhat incoherent, but it was understandable. Any scientist who had spent half a lifetime in a field would react this way if their world view suddenly collapsed: "You are an existence without existence, truly wonderful..."
Unlike Spider-Man's mutation, whose spider abilities, though also mysterious, could be explained and theorized through Dr. Connors' hybrid gene research.
In fact, it was still within the realm of scientific explanation, whereas Ymir's existence was beyond scientific explanation.
"Hey, buddy, now I understand why you call yourself Wraith-Man. You float around like a wraith in this world," Spider-Man patted Ymir's shoulder out of good will, smiling.
Ymir's feelings were very complex. He knew his state; he was a vengeful ghost that science could not explain. Moreover, he was not even a native of this world. Perhaps his existence was just a joke from the heavens, a bug.
"Spider-Man!" Just as Peter was trying to comfort Ymir, Dr. Connors' voice sounded again. The computer had derived the results of Spider-Man's DNA.
Spider-Man was optimistic: "Come on, Doctor, even if I lose my spider powers, I'll still be happy. You don't know how much trouble it has caused me!" If it weren't for this damned spider power causing trouble, ruining his dates with girls time and again, he wouldn't have been single for so long.
If the "curse" of the spider powers were truly lifted, Peter was mentally prepared to become an ordinary person. In fact, he was just a regular student in New York, who became a superhero only because of his extraordinary abilities.
He laughed, "Apart from the decline in my spider powers, I feel great. How bad can the test results be?"
"I'm very sorry," Dr. Connors opened his mouth, unsure how to explain to Spider-Man, stepping away from the research equipment to let Spider-Man see the test results himself: "It's very bad. The induced mutation factors in your blood are undergoing a series of changes."
Spider-Man understood what Dr. Connors meant. He leaned in to observe the changes in his blood cells and asked, "You mean the induced mutation factors are mutating again?"
"I think so. Based on my speculation, the genetic mutation that turned you into Spider-Man is not a one-time process; it has only just begun."
Spider-Man moved away from the observation lens, letting the curious Ymir study it, and looked at Dr. Connors, "Just begun? What will my genes become in the future?"
"Still undergoing continuous changes. The spider gene segments in your cells separating from the DNA chain is just a temporary process. They are undergoing new combinations and accelerating evolution. So I can't tell you what your DNA will eventually become."
"But one thing I can tell you is that it will no longer be normal human DNA. If you like, you can call it the X-gene." Dr. Connors referred to this mutation as X, meaning unknown and undirected.
Not being able to become an ordinary person was not the worst outcome. Dr. Connors continued, "I need to conduct more in-depth research to determine the mutation results, but your DNA may have permanently mutated. Based on preliminary judgment, you are turning into some kind of... monster..."
Dr. Connors' diagnosis was like a bolt from the blue, plunging Spider-Man into a panic he had never experienced before. He had never imagined that he would one day become one of those scientific madmen he had defeated, turning into a half-human, half-beast freak. It was truly terrifying.
