Chapter 8

Isn't the mirror only able to reflect oneself and not others?

Why is there this person, who looks completely different from the one in front of me?

Before my desk mate was possessed yesterday, I saw his reflection come out from the mirror. Now, this Captain Hao is also like that. Could it be... that I can't see ordinary people in the mirror, but I can see the mutated ones?

But... the camouflage uniforms represent the authorities, the mental pillar and hope of ordinary people. If they are also possessed, how many people will suffer as a result?

The key is, the other party looks completely normal, neither bumping into walls nor seeking concubines... If such a person can also mutate, doesn't it mean that anyone around me could be abnormal?

A chill ran up from the soles of his feet. Yang Yi felt as if he were in a jungle, where everyone looked like a skilled hunter, carefully disguising themselves. If one party revealed a flaw, they would deliver a fatal blow.

He glanced up again.

Captain Hao's second head, seeing that he wasn't speaking, became impatient, licking its lips as if it could burst out from his shoulder at any moment.

Suppressing the shock in his heart, Yang Yi's face turned red, and he seemed at a loss: "Call... Zhang Zhen!"

Captain Hao took out his phone and checked: "He's a student from No. 2 High School who was brought in last night. He's still unconscious and hasn't woken up. Do you want to see him?"

"Can I see him?" Yang Yi's eyes showed a look of longing, but he felt an indescribable tension in his heart.

Because, through the mirror, he saw the other party's second head staring at him... Not only that, but it was also licking its lips, as if it had seen a delicious meal!

Moreover, Captain Hao's right hand moved closer to his waist, ready to draw his weapon at the fastest speed.

It seemed that if he showed any sign of abnormality, he would be killed on the spot.

Cold sweat trickled down his back.

This place isn't for saving people; it's a den of bandits!

"If it's not possible, forget it..."

He smiled awkwardly, thinking of retreating, but before he could finish speaking, Captain Hao interrupted: "Of course you can. Follow me, but you must follow orders and not run around."

"Yes!"

Yang Yi wanted to refuse, but seeing the camouflage uniforms around him staring intently, ready to shoot at any moment, he had no choice but to agree.

He just wanted to come and see his classmate, and complete the task, but... he was forced into it.

He was still too naive and should have observed more carefully before coming.

...

Captain Hao walked ahead, and Yang Yi followed closely behind, secretly observing the other camouflage uniforms, but they didn't seem special.

They entered the building.

Without the mirror, the heads and such naturally disappeared.

Yang Yi deliberately kept a distance from the other party, fearing a surprise attack when he couldn't see them.

They didn't go to the ward but to a room. Captain Hao sat down: "Student, don't be nervous. You know the current situation. This is just a routine inquiry. You need to answer some questions before you can proceed!"

"Yes!"

He rubbed his hands obediently, pretending to be shy while secretly observing the surroundings.

It was a normal doctor's office, not very large. There was a coat rack behind the door, a cabinet for medical equipment, and a two-foot-high, one-foot-wide mirror hanging on the wall near the coat rack.

It looked a bit makeshift, as if it had been temporarily requisitioned.

"Can I see the mutated person's reflection in the mirror on the ceiling? Can I see it in a regular mirror too?"

An idea popped into his head.

Thinking about it, he didn't say anything but took a small step back, positioning himself so that his view in the mirror was at a symmetrical angle, allowing him to see Captain Hao sitting opposite him.

The other party didn't notice his movement and took out paper and pen: "What's your name? What's your relationship with Zhang Zhen? Have you had any strange experiences since the mirror appeared?"

"My name is Yang Yi. He's my desk mate..."

While explaining, Yang Yi secretly glanced at the mirror and indeed saw something. However, just one glance made his scalp tingle.

The other party's second head had stopped in front of him, less than a fist's distance from his face. Its neck, like a python, extended in the air, looking particularly eerie.

Huff!

Its nose pressed against his neck, sniffing around.

It seemed to be smelling before tasting the delicious meal...

Saliva and blood from its eyes slowly dripped down, making him feel indescribably nauseous, even though it didn't fall on him.

Knowing his situation, if he showed any abnormality, he might be immediately captured as a mutant. Yang Yi suppressed his disgust, nausea, and fear, maintaining a very natural expression on his face.

As if he hadn't seen anything.

Seeing that the teenager's tone and emotions didn't change, Captain Hao finally relaxed but still looked displeased: "Are you really just visiting? Tell the truth!"

"I..."

His face turned pale, as if his mask had been torn off. Yang Yi looked very conflicted, appearing too honest and simple, and seemed at a loss: "I'm telling the truth... I saw online that going crazy could turn someone into a mutant. I guessed he might already be one and wanted to come and see. If it's true, I can learn from his experience! If I have a chance, I can prepare in advance..."

His voice grew softer, and he looked as if he wanted to dig a three-bedroom, two-living room apartment in the ground.

The highest level of lying is nine parts truth and one part lie. A completely false story is the most clumsy.

Just being worried and coming here because of a good relationship... no one would believe it!

So, it might be better to openly "admit" it, which would be more in line with the other party's suspicions.

Sure enough, hearing his "frankness," Captain Hao finally relaxed: "At your age, it's normal to imagine the future, but it's best not to daydream, especially about mutants. They're not as wonderful as you might think! What you might face... is life and death! Alright, your classmate is in bed 306 on the fifth floor. Go see him yourself!"

Knowing he had passed this test, Yang Yi turned and left.

He glanced back, and in the mirror, the other party's second head had retreated, hanging quietly on his shoulder, motionless, as if the sniffing around his body had been an illusion.

"How was it?"

As soon as he left, another camouflage uniform came up.

Captain Hao: "He's an ordinary person! But we still need to be careful. Turn on the surveillance and watch his actions. If anything seems off, detain him first."

The camouflage uniform frowned: "Detaining someone without evidence... could cause panic!"

Captain Hao shook his head: "In extraordinary times, extraordinary measures are necessary. You experienced what happened yesterday and should understand the impact of letting a mutated monster loose!"

His face changed, and the camouflage uniform became serious: "I understand."

He turned and walked out.

As soon as he left, Captain Hao's second head in the mirror extended again, its long neck writhing like a python.

But no one could see this scene.
