Chapter 92 of 100
Chapter 92: Persuasion
13 min read3,301 words
Actually, calling it insider information is a bit inaccurate. It should be an unverified piece of news, or perhaps a rumor circulating within the office of economic reform. Before the regular meeting of the Shanghai Office of Economic Reform, Zhu Daodong "overheard" someone chatting about the possibility of increasing the number of stock listings this year. The person was asking someone beside him to confirm if it was true.
For Zhu Daodong, this was absolutely a piece of great news. If the number of stock issues could double, he would dare to use all his savings to buy stock subscription certificates!
Of course, Zhu Daodong's total savings amounted to no more than 20,000 yuan. This amount might make him a wealthy man in Shulin Ridge, but it was not enough to buy even a thousand stock subscription certificates, while the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China sold 200,000 certificates a day. This was why he had only paid 30% of the advance payment for the feed equipment, saving 40,000 yuan to buy stock subscription certificates. This was his opportunity, as well as the opportunity for the feed factory.
"Mr. Hu, has Mr. Dong's matter been taken care of?" Zhu Daodong asked.
Hu Zhengqing had just returned when Zhu Daodong called him into the room, where Hou Feng was also present.
"It's done. Mr. Dong chose a 17-inch color TV, which cost 960 yuan," Hu Zhengqing said. In the afternoon, he had been sent to accompany Dong Jinhai shopping, and Zhu Daodong had instructed that any request within 1,000 yuan should be satisfied. Since Dong Jinhai had traveled a long distance to Shanghai, it was necessary to show some hospitality.
"Good, as long as Mr. Dong is satisfied. I called you here today to discuss something. We still have 40,000 yuan left, and I want to use it for an investment," Zhu Daodong said. If he were to use this money for the feed factory or livestock farming, he wouldn't need to explain to anyone, as he had the authority to do so. However, since he was using it for another purpose, he needed the approval of the shareholder representatives. The twenty-odd village party secretaries were the shareholder representatives, and now Hou Feng and Hu Zhengqing were their authorized representatives. Zhu Daodong needed to convince them to use the 40,000 yuan to buy stock subscription certificates.
"An investment? Does Village Chief Zhu have another good idea?" Hou Feng asked with a smile. Anyone from Houjiatang Village had immense confidence in Zhu Daodong. Before coming to Shanghai, Hou Lihua had specifically instructed him to unconditionally support anything Village Chief Zhu wanted to do.
"Not exactly a good idea, but a rare opportunity. You should know about stock subscription certificates, right? These are the ones I asked Li Yang to buy for me. Take a look," Zhu Daodong said, taking out two of his own stock subscription certificates and handing them over.
"Village Chief Zhu, you mean to use the 40,000 yuan to buy stock subscription certificates?" Hu Zhengqing asked in surprise, realizing that the 20% advance payment Zhu Daodong had withheld was for this purpose.
Hou Feng and Hu Zhengqing had heard about stock subscription certificates before. Village Chief Zhu had entrusted his classmate Li Yang to buy a hundred of them. Although they looked good, they were quite expensive, costing 30 yuan each, enough to buy a load of rice.
"Exactly. Tomorrow is the last day for selling stock subscription certificates, and 40,000 yuan can buy more than 1,300 of them," Zhu Daodong nodded. He believed that even if this investment didn't make a profit, it wouldn't result in a loss. The installation and commissioning of the feed factory's equipment would take about six months, and he could use this time to invest in stocks. When the feed factory officially started production and needed funds, he could sell the stocks.
"Village Chief Zhu, I want to ask, can these stock subscription certificates be sold for money later?" Hu Zhengqing asked.
"Probably not. These aren't stocks, so they can't be resold. The subscription certificates are only for buying stocks. If we get lucky and win the lottery, we can use the certificates to buy stocks. Stocks are the most profitable thing right now. If you can buy them, you can make money immediately," Zhu Daodong said with a smile.
"What if we don't win the lottery?" Hu Zhengqing asked, somewhat worried.
"Then they would be worthless, but there will be four lotteries this year, giving us four chances. We should win at least once," Zhu Daodong said, his smile full of confidence. He hoped that Hou Feng and Hu Zhengqing would feel and be influenced by his confidence.
"Do you know how many stock subscription certificates there are in total?" Hu Zhengqing asked, feeling Zhu Daodong's confidence but not being influenced by it. His mind was focused on one thing: 40,000 yuan. This was 40,000 yuan, enough to build a tofu factory in the village. Now, Village Chief Zhu wanted to use 40,000 yuan to buy more than a thousand stock subscription certificates that might become worthless, which made him increasingly nervous.
"By yesterday, 1.6 million certificates had been sold. Including today and tomorrow, it should reach over 2 million," Zhu Daodong said.
"2 million? What are our chances of winning with just over a thousand certificates?" Hu Zhengqing's throat suddenly felt dry, and his face turned pale. This was 40,000 yuan. In Jinsha Village, probably no family had 40,000 yuan. Now, Village Chief Zhu wanted to use 40,000 yuan to buy a pile of stock subscription certificates that might become worthless, which he found hard to accept.
"It's different. Village Chief Zhu has good luck. Maybe all our certificates will win," Hou Feng said with a smile. He didn't know what stocks were, and he had only heard about stock subscription certificates after coming to Shanghai. His support for Zhu Daodong was entirely based on blind confidence.
"No, this matter must be discussed with the village party secretaries first," Hu Zhengqing said firmly.
"Of course, we need to discuss it with them. I plan to hold a teleconference, gathering all the village party secretaries to discuss it over the phone," Zhu Daodong said. He had expected Hou Feng and Hu Zhengqing's attitudes. At 30 yuan each, the stock subscription certificates were too expensive for people in Shulin Ridge, and even residents of Shanghai were not very enthusiastic about buying them.
Zhu Daodong first called Chen Shuli, reporting on the feed factory equipment and then focusing on stocks and stock subscription certificates, which were new things to Chen Shuli.
"Daodong, you're being a bit too hasty. How many of these village party secretaries understand stocks? You want them to agree to use 40,000 yuan to buy subscription certificates, which seems unrealistic. No matter how much you talk, they only want to see tangible results. Even if you say 40,000 yuan will turn into 400,000 or even 4 million, they won't believe it," Chen Shuli said, both criticizing and caring. He understood Zhu Daodong's intentions. To run the feed factory and livestock farm well, funds were needed, and the 400,000 yuan currently available was insufficient.
Although Chen Shuli had once instructed Zhu Daodong to legally and reasonably raise funds, he thought that using the purchase of stock subscription certificates to raise funds was a pipe dream.
"Secretary, this is an opportunity, perhaps a chance to change their fate. It would be a pity to miss such a good opportunity. I will do my best to persuade them," Zhu Daodong said.
