“Whoosh—”
Blocking the path of the arcane spell that was advancing in a straight line was an incredibly foolish move! Just as Luo Zhengdao was about to dodge the attack, a sharp whistling sound came from behind him, instantly scaring him out of his wits, thinking he was being attacked from both front and back. When Luo Zhengdao hurriedly turned to look back, he saw Vina Dubov firing arrows to assist him, and he was almost stunned, angrily saying:
“Vina? Why are you back?”
“I can’t leave you alone. If we go, we go together.”
After saying this, Vina thought of the old viscount who had faced death calmly and entrusted her with the care of his son. She had no time to care about what Luo Zhengdao was thinking, and she pulled him along, running at full speed.
“The damned scum! Just like your ancestors, you are despicable and base. I will kill you!”
Hearing the furious curses from behind, Luo Zhengdao, who was being dragged along, turned his head and couldn’t help but shudder. Vina Dubov’s last arrow had knocked off the strange white smiling mask on the mysterious man’s face, and the hood was also partially lifted by the arrow’s impact. Thus, Luo Zhengdao was able to glimpse what was hidden under the black cloak embroidered with golden threads. It was a horrifying face composed of maggots and other living, wriggling soft-bodied creatures. A person with a sound mind would vomit up everything they had eaten in the past three days just by looking at those wriggling worms. Luo Zhengdao felt his stomach convulse violently, and a wave of acid rushed to his throat. He quickly raised his hand to cover his mouth and ran forward, pulling Vina along.
Indeed, if such a terrifying and formidable enemy were chasing anyone, it would be natural for the person being chased to run at a speed that could break world records. Not to mention, just the face of the Worm Mage Ralph alone could match the combat power of a squad of earth goblin infantry, and his appearance could disgust a crowd of people without any effort.
“What is that?”
Vina Dubov had participated in many adventures in her early years and could be considered a well-informed adventurer, but even she couldn’t identify the enemy behind them. Luo Zhengdao, who had studied diligently in the New World, had seen a related record in an adventurer’s notebook. As he ran, he panted and said:
“That guy is a Worm Mage. We’ll talk about it later. Right now, we need to escape.”
Luo Zhengdao, who had been running for his life, had already made the worst-case scenario plan. His fingers gripped the corner of a card, and if the enemy continued to pursue them, he would have to activate this magic card. The aftereffects of the Curse of the Wild God were something he couldn’t afford to consider in a life-or-death situation. At the same time, the Worm Mage, who was about to continue the pursuit, suddenly stopped, as if sensing some unknown danger. After a brief hesitation, he abandoned the chase. The Worm Mage, who called himself Ralph Del, remained in place, seemingly deep in thought.
“Damn it, you destroyed my home. I’ll fight you to the death!”
At that moment, a Pandaren, almost completely burned by the fire, jumped out from the ruins behind Ralph Del. He swung a thick, emerald-green bamboo staff and brought it down with a powerful strike, which could have shattered a stone pillar. However, the Pandaren’s blow only hit a few wriggling white worms, and the Worm Mage suddenly disappeared. Not far away, the shadows cast by the burning buildings trembled, and a series of clattering sounds were heard.
The Panting Pandaren stared with wide eyes as countless skeletons stepped out of the darkness. The number of soul fires in their eye sockets was comparable to the stars in the sky. The Pandaren took a deep breath and charged forward, roaring in anger. Since there was no hope of victory, he would fight to the death!
Reaching the dock, Luo Zhengdao, out of breath, climbed aboard the Yangwei and shouted:
“Set sail! We need to leave immediately.”
Hearing this, the sailors immediately adjusted the rigging and unfurled the sails. Still uneasy, Luo Zhengdao turned to the half-elf beauty and said:
“Vina, gather the crew and order the starboard cannons to be ready for battle.”
“Okay, Will. Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out.”
“I understand. Go gather the crew!”
No matter how powerful an individual might be, as long as they didn’t reach a level that could qualitatively surpass the quantitative advantage, they would inevitably be overwhelmed by the endless human wave tactics. This was an undeniable fact. Any organization wouldn’t care about the number of minions and cannon fodder sacrificed, just as a person wouldn’t care about the number of cells that age and die daily. The decision-makers wouldn’t risk their own lives, and the deaths of their subordinates would only be a statistic on a report. To put it bluntly, as long as the enemy could be worn down by sacrifices, the leaders wouldn’t care how many cheap cannon fodder were sacrificed. The old saying “a general’s success is built on the bones of ten thousand” was quite straightforward.
In the Old World, the mighty Xiang Yu, who was said to have the strength to lift a mountain, was the best example. Surrounded at the Battle of Gaixia with only twenty-eight cavalrymen left, he still managed to launch several strong assaults and break through the encirclement. Such bravery was at the limit of human physical capabilities, but in the end, the heroic general was chopped into pieces by the relentless Han army and claimed the reward.
Although Luo Zhengdao’s resources were meager, and he didn’t have the right to declare that he would spare no expense to achieve victory, he was still happy to see the Worm Mage Ralph Del, whose appearance was so horrifying that it could make someone lose their appetite for half a month, be killed by ammunition. This terrifying existence, whose appearance was so repulsive that it was even worse than the combined ugliness of Fungus Sister and Chun Brother divided by a hundred, would be a blessing for everyone if it were humanely destroyed.
“Wow! You’re suffocating Dangdang! Big guy, what are you going to do to Dangdang? Tell you, Dangdang is very powerful, be careful, or Dangdang will bite you!”
While Luo Zhengdao was busy arranging the battle, he didn’t notice a small green flying creature suddenly pounce on his face. Instinctively closing his eyes, he was still wondering where this little thing had come from. When Luo Zhengdao, who was both amused and exasperated, reached out to pull the threatening little sprite off his nose, he saw Vina, whose face was flushed with embarrassment. In her haste to escape, Vina had stuffed Dangdang into her undergarments, and the sound of Luo Zhengdao’s voice had woken the little sprite, who was dazed and sleepy. The sprite then fiercely pounced on Luo Zhengdao’s face, intending to give him a taste of her wrath.
In the New World, the relationship between men and women was not as open as in the modern society of the Old World. While adventurers often had casual flings, the kind of immediate one-night stands that strangers in another world might have in a nightclub was far too pure.
The sprite Dangdang’s shameless behavior had made the half-elf beauty’s face turn red. The little thing had emerged from a sensitive part of her body, and while Dangdang herself didn’t seem to realize it, Luo Zhengdao and Vina, the two parties involved, couldn’t help but be speechless.
With a quick turn of his mind, Luo Zhengdao, who was relatively clever, took the initiative to change the subject and said to the dazed sprite:
“Hey, we didn’t mean any harm. We just grabbed you in the heat of the moment, not to kidnap you or anything…”
Before Luo Zhengdao could finish explaining, the sprite seemed to suddenly realize something and looked at the burning flames of the Fairy Garden with tearful eyes, saying in a sobbing voice:
“Wah, Dangdang’s home is gone.”
People looked back at the shore, where the ancient tree in the Fairy Garden, which served as a collective home for the sprites, was being consumed by the merciless fire. Seeing this, Luo Zhengdao’s forehead creased with a few black lines, and he tried to calm himself down. This was not the time to get angry. He tried to comfort the sprite as calmly as possible:
“Dangdang, don’t be sad. A house can be rebuilt. As long as you’re alive, there’s hope!”
“...Dangdang wants candy. Big guy, where’s the candy?”
Hearing this, the expression of concern and comfort on Luo Zhengdao’s face froze. His expression could be classified as a classic clown’s. He muttered to himself, “I’m so stupid. I knew I shouldn’t have tried to reason with her. Talking to someone with an IQ of 9 really lowers your IQ. I’m a big idiot, pure and simple.” He looked like he had suffered a severe mental blow, and his entire being seemed to be in a state of near-ash. He dejectedly pulled a candy from his spatial bag and threw it to Dangdang, who happily licked it, forgetting all her sorrows.
“Chirp!”
Hearing his pseudo-dragon start to bark, Luo Zhengdao saw it wagging its tail pitifully, seemingly very unhappy and concerned that its owner had fed and patted the sprite but not it. Luo Zhengdao squatted down and patted the pseudo-dragon’s head, saying:
“Do you want candy too?”
Raising a pseudo-dragon, a creature with thin dragon blood, was not luxurious. Unlike true dragons, they were not as temperamental and difficult to tame, and their diet was similar to that of canines, preferring meat but able to eat other foods as well. Basically, anything humans could eat, they could eat.
Understanding the situation, Luo Zhengdao complied and reached into his spatial bag to take out a few candies to feed the pseudo-dragon, patting its head to soothe its injured, fragile heart. Later, he stood up and looked at the sprite Dangdang, who was happily licking her candy, oblivious to her sorrows. The Yangwei and the Chao Yong had already sailed a distance from the shore, and from here, they could still see the flames and smoke rising from the Fairy Garden. It was clear that sending Dangdang back home was out of the question. Since her appetite was not large, Luo Zhengdao thought to himself, “I might as well treat her as another pet.”
Staring at the apocalyptic scene of the Fairy Garden, Vina Dubov gently touched her chest and said with a lingering fear:
“Will, who is that disgusting guy? Ralph Del, have you ever heard of him?”
Hearing this, Luo Zhengdao shook his head and said:
“No idea. I guess he might be an enemy with a grudge against the Light Dynasty!”
