Ch62 - Best Man

11 min read2,742 words

After the affair with Shen Qiuli was over, Ji Qinghuai and Xie Yan went back together to find Ji Xianzhi. Ji Qinghuai’s intuition was accurate, Ji Xianzhi had always known about Shen Qiuli’s existence, but he just didn’t tell him.

Ji Xianzhi said to the two of them, “This matter has come to an end, you don’t have to worry about what happens next. About Ma Zhishan, I’ll give him an explanation.”

This was exactly what Ji Qinghuai wanted.

Although Ma Wenbin was killed by Shen Qiuli, if they delved deeper, Xie Yan was also implicated. It would be best for Xie Yan to avoid this matter.

After he finished handling this matter, Ji Xianzhi glanced at the time and suddenly said to Xie Yan, “You should stay for dinner.”

This was the first time Xie Yan was meeting Ji Xianzhi as Ji Qinghuai’s boyfriend. Naturally, he wouldn’t refuse.

“Better to be obedient than respectful.”

So that night, Xie Yan and Ji Qinghuai’s family ate dinner together. Ji Xianzhi and Xie Yan had a good personal relationship and the couple had never treated him as an outsider before. With Xie Yan and Ji Qinghuai together, they had one more child at home so the atmosphere was very warm.

Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction, except for Ji Qinghuai’s poison, which they still couldn’t solve.

In the blink of an eye, winter faded to spring and the days flashed to April. During this good season when hundreds of flowers blossomed, Ji Qinghuai received a video call from his good friend Lu Fangjie.

The two chatted for a while before moving on to the main topic.

Lu Fangjie straightforwardly told Ji Qinghuai, “I’m getting married.”

“You’re quite fast.” Ji Qinghuai was elated when he heard the news.

Lu Fangjie’s smiled. “I wonder if I have the privilege of inviting Film Emperor Ji to be my best man?”

“Invite me to be your best man?” Ji Qinghuai clicked his tongue twice, “You’re really brave.”

Ji Qinghuai scratched his head, “Looking for such a handsome best man like me, aren’t you afraid I’ll steal some of your thunder when the time comes?”

“Do you think you steal very little?”

Lu Fangjie shot back and the two laughed together.

“Then it’s settled. I’ll send you the specific arrangements later.” Lu Fangjie remembered something and said again, “By the way, invite Mr Xie for me. If he’s free, you can come over together.”

Ji Qinghuai made an OK gesture, “I’ll tell you later.”

“Thank you.”

“See you at the wedding.” Ji Qinghuai waved at Lu Fangjie and hung up the video call.

Beside Ji Qinghuai, Xie Yan was peeling apples for him while he listened to their conversation.

Ji Qinghuai ate the apple pieces brought to his mouth by Xie Yan and asked him, “Are you going?”

“En.”

Ji Qinghuai was a little surprised. “Really?”

He remembered that Xie Yan didn’t like to attend boisterous events.

“This time it’s different.” Xie Yan smiled, “I’m going to look at the best man.”

This made Ji Qinghuai so pleased that his cat tail was almost revealed. He shook his head and stopped Xie Yan from feeding him.

“Don’t like it?” Xie Yan was puzzled

“What kind of apple do you want to eat?” Ji Qinghuai smiled, “Let’s do something else.”

As he spoke, he took Xie Yan into his arms and kissed him gently.

Lu Fangjie’s wedding date was set for April twelfth. After hearing the date, Xie Yan thought silently that April thirteenth was Ji Qinghuai’s birthday.

On the day of the wedding, Ji Qinghai changed into a low-key but luxurious suit and became a green background for Lu Fangjie obediently. The groom was reserved, calm and elegant, truly just like a noble.

During the performance, Ji Qinghuai performed a solo sweet little love song on stage. Although the song was sung for the newlyweds, Ji Qinghuai kept his eyes on the young man with gold-rimmed glasses in the huge banquet hall.

Xie Yan was also looking at Ji Qinghuai, his gaze never straying from the other. The Ji Qinghuai on stage was confident and dazzling, like a pearl forgotten in the world, shining with its own brilliance.

Their past interactions flashed in front of him one by one. The little wild cat with no conscience had now become a loved one. Xie Yan thought, if the wedding is their declaration of love, then the certificate is the home of their relationship.

At the end of the song, Xie Yan stood up to applaud Ji Qinghuai, his eyes full of tenderness that couldn’t be hidden. The photographer who was showered with a sudden burst of love and affection silently turned around to shoot something else.

The day after Lu Fangjie’s wedding, Ji Qinghuai ushered in his birthday and received several gifts early in the morning.

This was the first birthday they were celebrating together. They didn’t plan to spend it outside, only organising a small celebration at home. Who knew that after lunch, Xu Luo and Xiang Yunfei would ring the doorbell, carrying a heavy pile of things for hotpot in the evening.

Before Christmas, Ji Qinghuai had invited Xu Luo to eat hot pot at home, but he wasn’t free that day, so this had been delayed till now. Today, the people around him were ready to celebrate his birthday and dinner was naturally changed to hotpot.

Qin Lang had also finished his work early today and came over with the birthday cake. The family house was buzzing with activity.

After eating the hot pot that had been dragged on for months, a few people cleaned up the table together and prepared to cut the cake, an essential part of a birthday.

After lighting the candles, Ji Qinghuai thought for a while, then closed his eyes and started to make a wish. About half a minute later, Ji Qinghuai opened his eyes and blew out the candles on the cake.

Xu Luo was curious about his wish and nudged Ji Qinghuai with his elbow, “What did you wish for?”

Ji Qinghuai looked at Xu Luo’s face which was itching for gossip. He blinked, “Want to know?”

Xu Luo had already guessed the following.

“I won’t tell you.”

Xu Luo: “…” As expected.

Hearing him reply this way, Xie Yan was also curious but before he could ask, Ji Qinghuai made a silent gesture to him and said mysteriously, “It won’t work if I say it out loud.”

Xie Yan thought about it and didn’t ask any further.

Ji Qinghuai was in a very good mood today and he gave each of them a big piece of cake. Everyone present were men. Except for Ji Qinghuai, the others were not interested in sweets like cake, but they ate their share.

There was still a piece of cake left on the table, but no one could eat it anymore. Xiang Yunfei swiped off some cream, and when Xu Luo wasn’t paying attention, directly smeared the cream onto his face. Xu Luo froze before he reacted and retaliated. Before long, the two of them had gotten into a mess.

Ji Qinghuai was lying on a chair, looking at the liveliness in front of him as he ate. Slowly, he started feeling tired and his eyelids started drooping.

Then he fell into a warm embrace.

The sudden change broke the lively atmosphere that had built up for half a day. Xie Yan picked up Ji Qinghuai and sent him back to his room. When he returned to the living room, there was a dead silence.

After a long silence, Xu Luo hung his head and said first, “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help at all.”

In the past three months, Xu Luo had been searching for an antidote, but the more he searched, the colder his heart became and the more desperate he was.

He could only give Ji Qinghuai medicine to suppress it for a short time, thinking that they could delay it for a few more years. However, he didn’t expect Ji Qinghuai’s condition to deteriorate rapidly.

“Is there no way?” Qin Lang paused, “Even if it’s… risky.”

When Xiang Yunfei heard his words and tried to say something, Xu Luo pretended to kick him accidentally and Xiang Yunfei quickly clamped his mouth shut.

Xie Yan looked at the scene in front of him and said to Xu Luo bluntly, “I know you have a way.”

“I don’t…”

“Xu Luo.” Xie Yan interrupted Xu Luo, “I beg you, tell me.”

Xu Luo was startled. Xie Yan actually begged him…

Xu Luo was dejected. “Qinghuai is also my friend. If there is a way to save him, I would try, but…”

Xu Luo wanted to keep this matter under wraps, but since Xie Yan asked, he would not rest until he told him, so he had to say truthfully, “There is a way, but it is very dangerous.”

“I need a human test subject.” Xu Luo explained, “I’ll have to give the same poison to the person and then test the medicine. An ordinary person won’t last long under the poison, so it’ll be best if we can find a demon.”

Xu Luo pointed at Xie Yan and Qin Lang, “Like you two, but I won’t agree to it because I’m not sure. Testing medicine is no different from looking for death.”

Xie Yan and Qin Lang glanced at each other.

Xu Luo exposed their intentions bluntly, “I know what you two want to do, but I won’t give you that opportunity.”

Xu Luo stood up and patted Xiang Yunfei, “Let’s go.”

Saying that, he no longer cared about Xie Yan and the others, he went straight out the door.

Xiang Yunfei glanced at Qin Lang timidly, “Goodbye boss, goodbye Mr Xie.”

Then he scampered away.

Xie Yan walked to the balcony and watched Xu Luo and Xiang Yunfei walking away downstairs, his eyes sinking.

Xie Yan turned around and walked towards the door, “I’ll go out, watch Huaihuai for me.”

Qin Lang said, “I’ll go with you.”

This was also within Xie Yan’s expectations and he agreed, “Let’s go.”

Half an hour later, Xu Luo sent Xiang Yunfei to the door of his house and reminded him not to help Qin Lang and the others, they would only add to the chaos. Xiang Yunfei understood the risks of experimenting and repeatedly assured him. Xu Luo was relieved and finally left.

Who knew that when Xiang Yunfei had just entered the house and turned on the light, his soul was almost scared off. Xiang Yunfei looked at Xie Yan and Qin Lang in the clinic in shock and took a while to recover.

Qin Lang didn’t have the time to beat around the bush with Xiang Yunfei and directly stated his intention, “Did Xu Luo give you that bottle of poison?”

Xiang Yunfei waved his hand. “No, I don’t know anything. Don’t ask me.”

“That poison is still very useful and Xu Luo can’t let it be destroyed. If he keeps it by his side, we’ll steal it any time. The poison concerns my brother’s life and death, he won’t rest assured, so the poison can only be with you.”

Qin Lang’s analysis was the same as Xu Luo’s words. Xiang Yunfei was stunned and didn’t know what to do for a while.

Qin Lang extended his hand to Xiang Yunfei, “Give it to me.”

Xiang Yunfei immediately covered his pocket and shook his head wildly. “No, boss, it’s too dangerous.”

“Take it out yourself, don’t force me to settle old accounts with you.” Xie Yan took a step forward and said lightly.

Xiang Yunfei: “…”

The matter of selling fake medicine to Ji Qinghuai was a hurdle that Xiang Yunfei would never get over. Facing Qin Lang, he dared to speak up for himself, but in front of the domineering Mr Xie, he didn’t dare to go against him. He tremblingly took out the things in his pocket and handed them over to Qin Lang.

At the same time, Xie Yan, who was beside Qin Lang, suddenly struck and chopped down on the back of his neck. Qin Lang who was defenceless and caught unprepared immediately lost consciousness and fell.

“Sorry.” Xie Yan brought Qin Lang to the sofa and took away the glass bottle in his hand.

Xiang Yunfei stood to the side with trepidation and watched as Xie Yan opened the bottle cap. At this moment, a familiar voice came from the door.

“I thought about it, but I still don’t think you’re alone…”

Halfway through his words, Xu Luo raised his eyes and saw Xie Yan tilting his head to drink something. Xu Luo was horrified, “You can’t!”

The glass bottle was emptied.

Xu Luo stood at the door, his heart cold. Over, it’s all over.

Xie Yan closed his eyes, allowing the toxin to spread rapidly in his body. The overbearing pressure flooded the room. Feeling the weight crushing down on him, Xiang Yunfei’s legs began to weaken and he fell to the ground.

Xu Luo knew the situation wasn’t good, and there was even less time for him to lose his temper. He bent down to help Xiang Yunfei up and said urgently, “We can’t stay here, hurry and get help.”

Xiang Yunfei didn’t understand what Xu Luo meant, and was about to ask when Xie Yan opened his eyes and turned his head to look at them.

Xu Luo looked at Xie Yan’s crimson eyes, his heart completely cold, “Xie…Mr. Xie, calm down!”

Xu Luo’s voice began to tremble.

Xie Yan looked at them without a trace of fluctuation in those indifferent eyes.

Xu Luo’s words seemed to have no impact on him. Red demonic energy surrounded him, displaying his hostility.

Xu Luo shouted to Xiang Yunfei in horror, “Run!”

Xiang Yunfei stood up with so much force that he fell back in fear. Xu Luo turned back to pull him up again while Xie Yan raised his hand and condensed his demonic force in his palm, directing it to the two of them.

Xiang Yunfei immediately wrapped his head, “Help!”

Suddenly, a barrier appeared in front of the two of them. Xu Luo turned his head to see a figure quickly fly in.

Ji Qinghuai held Xie Yan’s hand and intertwined their fingers. His other hand wrapped around Xie Yan and pressed him against the wall. Xie Yan struggled, but Ji Qinghuai squeezed his hand and asked warmly, “You’re willing to hit me?”

After he finished speaking, he lowered his head and kissed Xie Yan.

The glowing white demonic energy swirled around Ji Qinghuai, slowly interweaving into the red demonic energy around Xie Yan. The red demonic energy dissolved little by little and in the process, Ji Qinghuai transferred all the poison in Xie Yan’s body to himself.

After a while, Xie Yan’s consciousness cleared and the hostile aura surrounding him dissipated. Ji Qinghuai let go of Xie Yan, and the hand that was holding Xie Yan’s lost its strength and he passed out again.

Xie Yan took Ji Qinghuai into his arms, distress filling his eyes, and…an unknown fear.

After this episode, it was already early morning when Ji Qinghuai woke up again. The lights in the room were always switched on and Xie Yan was guarding him by the bed, not taking one step away.

When he woke up, Ji Qinghuai felt extremely tired and didn’t even want to open his eyes. This was the first time he had felt this way. He knew that his body had started to weaken already.

When Ji Qinghuai looked at Xie Yan, the usually noble and cold Mr Xie had lost his usual elegance and his eyes were still so beautiful but they were filled with helplessness.

Ji Qinghuai sat up strenuously, and the next moment was embraced by Xie Yan.

Feeling the hand holding him tighten, Ji Qinghuai slowly hugged Xie Yan back and buried his face in his shoulder.

After holding each other in silence for a moment, Xie Yan let go of Ji Qinghuai and raised his hand to caress the pale face.

“Ji Qinghuai, let’s get the certificate.”

That part when Xu Luo was like, “I thought about it, but I still don’t think you’re alone…” as he returned was so funny LOL

We’re almost at the end so we’ll go back to 2 updates per week yayyy
