That night, inside the Xu family mansion in Zhonghai, the lights were blazing bright. The vast garden paths outside were patrolled by security personnel everywhere.
In a relatively dimly lit Baroque-style bedroom, Xu Zhihong, dressed in a black robe, stood at the bar inside, pouring himself a glass of Lafite red wine. He had just raised the glass and swirled it a few times without taking a sip when he heard the bedroom door being knocked on with a "bang bang bang."
"Come in," Xu Zhihong frowned.
A man wearing a faded T-shirt and torn jeans, with a few days' worth of stubble and a noticeable body odor, walked in with a grin.
"I've told you how many times, this door is a work of art. You should announce yourself before entering," Xu Zhihong said, feeling helpless about his subordinate.
The man laughed, "I was just too excited and forgot."
"You've never remembered," Xu Zhihong glared at him.
The man, not taking it seriously, scratched his greasy head, "Young Master, do you know what I saw today?"
Xu Zhihong walked to the windowsill and said calmly, "Get to the point."
"No sense of romance, no wonder you can't get the Lin girl..." the man muttered, then continued, "Lin Kun came to me, asking for help to deal with Yang Chen. I thought I'd do him a favor and lent him five retired soldiers. But today, those five were all taken down by Yang Chen alone. Lin Kun was thrown into a trash bin! Young Master, isn't that funny? Ha ha! That was his father-in-law, thrown into the trash bin!"
Xu Zhihong swirled the red wine in his glass, pondering for a moment, and said, "It seems this Yang Chen is not simple. Unfortunately, there's too little information on him, making it hard to understand him."
The man teased, "Young Master, are you afraid?"
"Afraid?" Xu Zhihong sneered, "Just because he knows a few moves and can talk tough, why should I be afraid? A strong dragon can't overpower a local snake. He's just a nobody who returned from abroad half a year ago. How can he really make a difference?"
"Should I go and take care of him now? I heard he's pretty quick, and my hands are itching," the man said excitedly.
Xu Zhihong shook his head, "No need. For now, we won't get involved. Lin Ruoxi may seem quiet, but she understands everything. In this city, she might not be the smartest or the most low-key woman, but she is definitely one of the most dangerous. Don't provoke her, and don't force her to do anything she doesn't want to."
"Young Master, you always take Miss Lin so seriously. What's so special about her?" the man asked, puzzled.
Xu Zhihong took a sip of the dry red wine, "I'm not entirely sure, but it's better to be cautious. As for Yang Chen, don't worry. We don't need to do anything. Lin Kun, that brainless one, won't let it go easily."
"Young Master is wise!"
"Less flattery! Get out of my room and go take a shower!"
"I just took one last week..."
The next morning, Yang Chen drove to the West District market to buy breakfast.
Old Li was indeed back at his usual spot, looking cheerful and in high spirits. It seemed he had learned about the Chen family's situation and felt a great weight lifted off his shoulders. Seeing Yang Chen approach, he greeted him with a smile, "Little Yang, you're here. I heard you started working at a company. That's good, it's what young people should do."
"Work is work, not much difference," Yang Chen smiled, "Unfortunately, I'll have less time to chat with you guys. Sitting in an office isn't as free as being here."
Old Li chuckled, "Jingjing was very happy last night. Did you say something to her?"
Yang Chen thought for a moment, "I agreed to visit her at school today."
Old Li looked enlightened, patting Yang Chen on the shoulder, "Young people should get along well. My Jingjing is simple, don't let her get hurt, or I won't forgive you!"
Seeing Old Li's "I knew it" expression, Yang Chen wanted to explain but couldn't find the words, so he just nodded awkwardly.
Carrying a large bag of breakfast, Yang Chen returned to the office, where the women in the PR department were eagerly waiting. They chattered and praised Yang Chen for the breakfast.
Yang Chen had just sat down and was about to open his computer to start his new "professional gamer" career when he saw Mo Qianyi, looking a bit tired, enter the office.
Mo Qianyi glanced at Yang Chen, then at the pile of buns and fried dough sticks on his desk, and felt a surge of anger. This guy, as her husband, was taking care of his wife in the hospital but still remembered to buy breakfast for the office women. She sneered, "You're very considerate of your colleagues, buying breakfast so diligently. I wonder if you'll think of bringing some for someone else."
"Miss Mo, do you want some? No problem, there's still plenty," Yang Chen picked up a meat bun and offered it to her.
"You know who I'm talking about," Mo Qianyi said in a low voice.
Yang Chen smiled helplessly, "Ruoxi should eat light and healthy food. Aunt Wang will naturally prepare it for her. I can't bring her greasy buns and fried dough sticks."
"Insensitive, no need to make excuses."
Although the explanation was reasonable, Mo Qianyi didn't accept it.
Seeing that this woman had a significant bias against him, Yang Chen didn't bother to argue, shrugged, and started eating the bun himself.
Mo Qianyi had spent the whole night at the hospital with Lin Ruoxi and was hungry. Smelling the aroma in the office, she felt even hungrier. Seeing Yang Chen take the bun back, she was even more annoyed. She cursed him for being stingy and quickly grabbed a bag of steamed dumplings from the table and walked back to her office.
"You're hungry but still putting up a front," Yang Chen muttered with a smile.
As noon approached, Yang Chen politely declined Zhao Hongyan's invitation to have lunch with the three women and drove to the hospital.
The First Hospital of Zhonghai was relatively quiet during the day, with fewer patients, which was suitable for their recovery.
Yang Chen found his way to Lin Ruoxi's ward and saw the door open, with voices coming from inside. He approached carefully and saw a familiar face from a few days ago.
"Ruoxi, the hospital director and I are quite close. How about I have them arrange the best VIP ward for you? It's a small gesture from me," Xu Zhihong said, looking at Lin Ruoxi with concern.
Lin Ruoxi, leaning against the white pillow, her pale face turned to the window, said calmly, "No need, thank you for coming to see me."
"Ruoxi, you're being too formal. If I weren't so busy, I would stay with you in the hospital. People like us lack the time to be together in peace," Xu Zhihong said with a sigh.
This time, Lin Ruoxi didn't even bother to respond, as if she hadn't heard anything, lost in thought.
Aunt Wang, who was tidying up the tableware, found the silence in the room awkward and was about to say something polite on Lin Ruoxi's behalf when she saw Yang Chen standing at the door. She immediately smiled in relief, "Son-in-law, you're here."
