Chapter 6

3 min read674 words

The first letter from Miles began with a proposal of marriage, followed by a declaration of his intention to court her earnestly, then flowed into a series of compliments and sweet words. Near the end, it mentioned that he was receiving attention due to the holy sword, that many people at the palace knew about it and were supporting him, and that he wanted to go buy more stationery together since he had used half a sheet. The writing became slightly smaller around the parts about the attention and support, which made her laugh involuntarily.

After exchanging a few letters, they went to buy stationery together. The man who sold the stationery that day owned a shop, and Miles had invested in the paper, so he had been making high-quality stationery. She liked the design, so she bought everything and decided to support him further.

They continued their correspondence and meetings, and on the third proposal, they officially became engaged.

After discussing it, they decided that even after marriage, she wanted to work first. She took the maid examination and was to work at the palace after graduation.

There were several orientation sessions, and each time, her superiors and future colleagues would approach her in disguise. When she asked Miles what to do if someone pretended to be a classmate, he told her to write down who was disguised as what. When she included the fifth prince, who she saw incognito on her way home, it turned out that he had even managed to lose his guards, and Miles relayed her list to the knights and the royal guard, who were grateful. Subsequent practical training involved not learning how to make tea but memorizing the faces of people at the palace.

She also listened carefully to Miles' background and learned about Nicholas. While she was surprised by Nicholas, she had mostly lost interest, so her reaction was similar to reading a newspaper.

On the day of the graduation ceremony, Miles came. Students were not allowed to attend unless they were related to a graduate, but Mary, who had taken a year off, was able to participate as a special guest and sat in the family section.

After the ceremony, as she was about to leave with her family and Miles, Mary called out to her.

"Congratulations, Harriet. It's been a while, how have you been?"

"Thank you, I've been well. I'm sorry, but I have a party at home, so I'm leaving now."

Mary seemed irritated by my cold attitude, unlike before.

"What's your problem? You pushed the short straw onto me and now you're running away because you're the only one who's happy? You're engaged to Mr. Miles, right?! It would be fine if you helped your sister-in-law! At the very least, connect me with Mr. Miles!"

With Miles standing right in front of her, there was no need to connect them. Thinking this, she opened her mouth to speak.

"I didn't push anything onto you; you and your family attached yourselves. Besides, the Clayton family has been cut off from Miles and is under a no-approach order. You're not in a position to call him brother, and if you knew I was engaged to Miles, you should have known it was forbidden to speak to me. There are many witnesses here, so I will report you and have you pay a fine."

Mentioning the fine made Mary pale, and she fled.

The Clayton family had already paid several fines, and Nicholas' father had decided that if it happened again, they would not be allowed to leave the estate after graduation. This incident would likely solidify that decision.

"In the end, even being so close, I didn't realize. Even though I knew Harriet was engaged."

"I'll be the only one to find you. Let's go home."

Miles seemed pleased with Harriet's small possessiveness and happily escorted her as they walked away.
