Chapter 33 - From Now On: Nikokado Emi

“That’s a good sign, right…?”

Emi closed the email and stretched, then let herself relax. Her dad had surprisingly ended the conversation early, saying he was going to have a beer and head to bed.

“Guess he hasn’t had the time for that before, huh?” She spoke as if he were right there next to her.

Her dad was quite the drinker, though he usually only indulged outside of social settings when he was in a good mood. For him to cut off their chat to grab a drink meant he must have really been in the mood.

—Maybe I should buy some beer too.

With that thought, Emi started tinkering with her computer. It was bizarre to think she lived in an era where she could get items from another world delivered to her door with just a click.

—Come to think of it, Dad’s SOS came through the computer too.

One day, a message popped up on her social media account out of the blue.

The sender claimed to be Emi’s father, Sakito. He was unsure if she was his daughter since his phone was broken and he couldn’t contact her, so he asked her to reach out if she was.

She wondered how this message had reached her since she never shared personal info online. Still, considering how serious it sounded, she decided to call her dad anyway.

But no one answered.

While she was pondering what to do, another message came in.

“If you’re uncertain, you can ask me something to prove I’m who I say I am.”

The timing was perfect, so Emi replied. She asked for her birth date and the name of her childhood pet.

The response came back almost immediately.

After that, Emi found herself busy with her dad’s bizarre updates, confirming his current status, and dealing with a mountain of paperwork.

Nikokado Sakito is currently considered missing.

He’s believed to have gone missing during a mountain hike, but no body has been found so far. Given the circumstances, even Sakito’s friend, who had rented out the lodge, was questioned. Emi could only bow her head in apology to the man.

And the lodge, strangely enough, was still perfectly in place at its original location.

In any case, while Emi was handling things on her end, Sakito was also working hard on his side to keep their lines of contact open. The QR code-like magical pattern from the elves played a big role in this matter.

Yet, Emi couldn’t help but ponder.

—Dad’s considered dead here now, isn’t he…?

Does his future even exist in this world anymore?

And what about her own future, with her father taken so far away?

The answers were nowhere to be found.
