The murderer might strike again, and Lei Xue's former colleague, following procedure, began reporting to their superiors.
They guarded the cave entrance under the guise of protecting the scene, constantly making phone calls.
Discovering Meng Changxi's whereabouts was a great achievement, and the two police officers were very friendly to Han Fei, but they instinctively kept Han Fei outside the cave. They still didn't fully trust him.
"Leave the rest to us."
Reinforcements from the police arrived shortly after, and Han Fei stared at his own photo, deciding he didn't want to stay any longer.
"I'm glad I could help, but I don't want to be a bother here." Han Fei was a professional actor, and with the training from the game, it was hard for others to read his emotions from his facial expressions.
On the surface, everyone was friendly, but in reality, Han Fei had already made other plans.
"Lei Xue, can you take me back?"
"Sure."
The two who discovered the cave were the first to leave. Lei Xue rode her motorcycle and took Han Fei back to the old district.
They didn't say a word during the ride, and it wasn't until Han Fei got off the motorcycle that Lei Xue couldn't help but speak.
"Do you still think the murderer is Meng Chang'an?"
"My suspicion of Meng Chang'an hasn't decreased, but you're right. Meng Changxi did bury the bodies; he is indeed a criminal." Han Fei returned the helmet to Lei Xue and didn't say anything more.
After Lei Xue left, Han Fei looked at the apartment building in front of him, reached into his pocket, and felt the stun gun.
If it were someone else, knowing they might be targeted, it would be hard to enter their own building as usual, but Han Fei was different. He had been in much more terrifying and dangerous situations.
After mentally preparing himself, Han Fei was about to go inside when his phone suddenly vibrated.
After seeing the message, Han Fei's expression became strange.
"Why would Wei Youfu's father send me a message now?" After a moment of thought, Han Fei quickly understood the key point.
He was a person of interest to the police, and the area around his residence was heavily monitored. It would be difficult for Meng Changxi to meet him here, so the most effective method was to meet at another place, using a third party to facilitate the meeting.
"If the person who was following me earlier was Meng Changxi, he must know that I have a good relationship with Wei Youfu's father and even promised to take care of him."
He clicked on the message, which was simple: Wei Youfu's father wanted to meet him.
No extra words meant no extra vulnerabilities.
Han Fei immediately replied and headed straight to North Street in the old district.
Passing by the shooting location of "The Flower of Evil," the courtyard outside the apartment building was deserted, and the production team wasn't working.
"Director Jiang hasn't continued shooting? Is he waiting for the case to be resolved?"
This was good news for Han Fei, but now wasn't the time to focus on that. He had been to the old man's place with Lei Xue and knew that the old man and Meng Shi lived in the same building.
Wei Youfu's father lived on the fourth floor, and Meng Changshou, who had taken over Meng Shi's house, lived on the third floor.
Without disturbing anyone, Han Fei quietly went to the fourth floor, knocked on the door, and found it unlocked.
"Old man, are you home?" To maintain the act, Han Fei entered the room as if he knew nothing, but in reality, every nerve was on edge.
The kitchen door seemed to be open, and the sound of running water could be heard. As Han Fei walked towards the kitchen, the bedroom door suddenly opened.
He immediately dodged to the side and took out the stun gun.
Perhaps because he had encountered too many terrifying situations in the game, Han Fei was surprisingly calm.
Even though there might be a fugitive suspect in the room, he wasn't afraid at all. His heart was calm, and his eyes were like deep, ancient wells.
"Most people would be scared to death seeing my face, but you show no reaction. I didn't misjudge you; being an actor is just a cover, isn't it?"
The hoarse voice, as if filled with iron filings, was painful just to hear.
"You're wrong; I'm just a comedian."
Han Fei looked into the bedroom, where a man with a severely burned face stood at the door.
His entire face was destroyed, making it impossible to recognize his features, except for his bright, sharp eyes, which were like a sharpened blade.
As Han Fei observed the man, the man was also looking at him.
"You seem to have known I would be waiting for you here." The man with the completely disfigured face smiled terrifyingly: "You have a familiar smell. Did you go to the Winter Flower Ice Factory's sewer? I didn't leave any clues, so how did you find it?"
"You have a lot of questions, Meng Changxi." After Han Fei said Meng Changxi's name, the man's smile disappeared.
Looking at the terrifying man in front of him, Han Fei didn't show any fear. His calm reaction made the man hesitant to act rashly.
They stood facing each other for a long time before the man with the completely disfigured face slowly raised his hands: "It's been a long time since anyone called me by that name. Don't worry, I have no ill intentions."
"I know." Han Fei slowly retreated to the living room: "Where is Wei Youfu's father?"
"The old man is sleeping; I won't harm him."
Meng Changxi, with his completely disfigured face, pushed open another bedroom door, and Wei Youfu's father was lying on the bed, breathing steadily.
Seeing the old man was safe, Han Fei sighed in relief, and this subtle action caught Meng Changxi's attention: "I followed you before. You were very kind to the families of the victims in the human puzzle case. Are you also a victim's family member?"
Han Fei thought of his roommate in the haunted house and nodded slightly: "I have a reason to catch the real murderer. After my investigation, Meng Chang'an is a major suspect, but what I find strange is why you suddenly disappeared a few years ago?"
"If I didn't disappear, the next to die would have been me and my wife." Meng Changxi touched the scars on his face: "My brother and that beast were both mad."
"Your brother? Meng Changshou?" Han Fei's eyes narrowed; the truth that had been buried for years was finally about to come to light!
"I know you're surprised, but I chose to disappear for a very important reason, and it was because of my brother." Meng Changxi's scars twisted: "When my mother was killed, I had a question that I couldn't understand: why did she take Chenchen to the Winter Flower Ice Factory? There was no reason. Later, I thought of a possibility: it wasn't my mother who took Chenchen there; someone used Chenchen to lure my mother there."
"I always suspected Meng Chang'an and kept comforting my brother, but later I realized it wasn't like that." Meng Changxi's voice was devoid of emotion, as if he had lost his humanity: "My brother was very honest, not very smart, and had a good temper. Everyone thought he was easy to bully. After Chenchen and my mother's incident, my brother became crazy and didn't speak a word. I was worried about his health, so I took him to the hospital for a check-up."
"What happened next?"
"Originally, I was afraid that my brother's grief would affect his health, but the brain scan results really scared me." These events happened ten years ago, but Meng Changxi remembered them clearly: "The positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed that my brother had functional defects in the orbitofrontal cortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, temporal cortex, and limbic cortex. When you connect these defective areas, they form the shape of a butterfly."
