Chapter 1: Master Picked Me Up

The day Master picked me up.

The color of the sky was deep and the rain poured down in torrents.

Master walked past me, dressed in white and holding an umbrella.

He seemed to have glanced at me.

He left.

After a while, that white figure turned back again and stopped in front of me.

He asked me, “Boy?”

I was expressionless. I didn’t want to reply to him.

I thought to myself, are you blind?

But then I considered the most critical issue of hunger, and needing to eat at present. I looked up at him sincerely.

“Uncle, give me something to eat, okay?”

Master was silent for a while before speaking.

“…I am not your uncle.”

He said these few words, but I didn’t understand him.

So I ignored him.

Until, he bought a meat bun, and handed it to me.

I quickly changed my tune.

“Father!”

…

I followed my father and left.

Full of expectation, I looked forward to the great meat bun business. If possible, I hope to one day die because I was stuffed to the brim with too many meat buns.

May the heavens hear my wish.

—The first day.

The rain stopped.

Master wanted to give me a bath.

The water was cold.

There was no warmth at all.

I felt very cold. To the point that I shivered and couldn’t even speak.

Master said, “Cultivators must be resistant to the cold.”

As he said that, he pressed me down into the water. He washed me clean from head to toe, without letting off even a single strand of hair.

The water was changed over and over again.

Master also patiently washed me again and again.

Finally, I was clean.

I was also on the brink of dying.

I laid on the bed, half-dead. I felt dizzy. I thought to myself, sure enough, I couldn’t eat meat buns. Even just eating one would kill me.

Woo… I still wanted two more.

I kind of wanted to cry.

Master touched my forehead and pinched my arm. He frowned. “Why is your body so weak?”

I turned my head away, burying half of my face into the pillow. I mumbled to myself vaguely.

“Father, I want to eat meat buns.”

I thought I was dreaming.

In my dream, Father was especially good to me. He bought me two meat buns.

They were steaming, with thin skin, tasty meat stuffing, and close to bursting.

They were especially delicious.

—The second day.

On the bed.

It was already dark when I woke up.

—The third day.

Master finally invited a doctor over.

The doctor looked ridiculously young. He was very surprised when he saw me, his eyes seeming to say,

——Why haven’t you died yet?

I laid on the bed, and indistinctly heard the doctor talking to Master outside.

“…You should just let him die.”

Master returned to him a short, but powerful word.

“Scram.”

So the doctor scrammed expressionlessly.

He left behind a very bitter medicine.

I didn’t want to drink the medicine.

It was too bitter. I felt like throwing up as soon as I smelled it.

Master said, “I’ll give you a meat bun to eat after you drink it.”

I thought to myself, the current me can’t be satisfied with just a meat bun.

“Two.”

Master nodded. “Okay.”

—The fourth day.

I felt much better.

I could get up.

I got out of bed to pour myself some water.

While I was drinking it, Master came in. He looked at me. “Put on your clothes.”

My stomach grumbled.

“Father, I’m hungry.”

Master corrected me again.

“I am not your father.”

“Oh, Mother?”

Master: “…”

He gave me three meat buns in exchange for calling him ‘Master.’

I was very happy. The great meat bun business was about to come true.

Master leaned down and carried me onto the bed.

“It’s unbecoming to eat a lot when cultivating. Don’t eat tomorrow.”

I looked down at the three freshly steamed buns in my hands.

I’ll eat one and a half each day.

I’ll be hungry, but I won’t starve to death.

"

"

I sat on the edge of the bed, while Master sorted out my clothes.

I carefully divided one of the buns into two halves. Even the stuffing was carefully broken into two halves. I prepared to save it. Tomorrow’s rations must be saved carefully.

Master looked down and glanced at me. I didn’t know what he was thinking of as he reached out to take one half of the bun.

“Thank you.”

Then I stared blankly as my other half, yes, my other half of the bun, was gone.

It was eaten… by Master… with his own mouth…

Gone.

Half of my meat bun.

Gone.

Tomorrow’s rations.

I… have nothing to live for…

Woo.

…

Master touched my forehead, and the corners of his lips curled slightly.

“Good disciple.”
