Chapter 10: My Godchild

Half an hour later, the residents who had come to handle the deceased's burial returned from town.

At the same time, the deceased's relatives and friends came to pay their respects.

Duty-bound, the elderly nun returned to the chapel to handle the funeral arrangements.

Linsay remained alone in the house.

After this period of communication, he had returned to his calm state.

The information the nun had told him was a mix of good and bad.

For example, the term 'universe' as understood by Linsay from Earth did not apply here.

The universe the nun spoke of was not the vast, dark void filled with stars.

Instead, it was a general term for the interconnected worlds she mentioned.

The world Linsay was currently in was called Hidden Frontier, explored by a joint team from several worlds 120 years ago, but soon after, they were blocked by a large void at the end of the world.

Some of the exceptionally capable Awakened chose to fly on.

Continuing their journey to the unknown lands.

The rest settled at the edge of the Hidden Frontier, and over time, gradually formed the present-day town.

Due to the neighboring Black Mountain world being occupied by a powerful dragon beast,

For the past century, the frontier town could only travel to other worlds through spatial teleportation.

Then, ten years ago, this teleportation facility was severely damaged by the Source Essence tide on Harvest Day, and no one could repair it.

Since then, Hidden Frontier has truly become a secluded place.

Completely isolated from the outside world.

"Truly a place of absolute safety..."

Sitting on the bed and sipping hot water, Linsay sighed again, but his mindset was completely different.

Compared to his previous panic, he was now completely calm.

First, he needed to return to Anvil Village.

This was Linsay's current primary goal, which he wanted to achieve, but faced numerous difficulties.

The good news was that due to the characteristics of Hidden Frontier, he would not be found by the Law Knights. Before successfully leaving Hidden Frontier, he even had the chance to find a way to resolve his status as a criminal in the City of Law.

Possessing the special skill of a "Gamer,"

Linsay did not believe his future would be spent living a mundane life in the frontier.

What he needed to think about now

Was how to become stronger, how to develop his "Gamer" abilities, and how to find a way to cross the Black Mountain and return to other civilizations.

He had a rough outline of his future in mind.

Linsay walked out of the house again.

In the main hall of the small chapel, the nun was leading the deceased's relatives and friends in paying their respects. More than ten people walked past the yellow wooden coffin one by one, including elders and youths, men and women. Most of them had sad expressions, but none of them cried.

After everyone had finished paying their respects, the elderly nun slowly walked to the front of the coffin.

Her aged body was not tall, but her steady and profound demeanor made people involuntarily follow her in prayer.

"Death has come, but it is not the end."

"The soul returns to slumber, the body returns to Source Essence."

"The deceased should leave the world of the living, and the living should silently bid farewell to the deceased."

"Rest in peace—"

"May you be free from the disturbance of the Abyss, may you not be lost in the Sea of Death, may you embrace a new beginning...”

After the prayer, the deceased's family lifted the coffin.

Led by the nun, they silently walked out of the chapel, leaving behind a quiet atmosphere.

Linsay came to the church door, grabbed the door, and poked his head out for a look.

The funeral procession stepped on the snow, turned to the cemetery behind the church, and formally began the burial of the body.

The elderly nun was the undisputed pillar of the funeral.

She directed the entire process with concise and clear words, and all the townspeople respected her commands.

Whew—

The cold winter wind blew by.

This made Linsay, who had a cold, want to cough.

Not wanting to disturb the solemn burial ceremony, he returned to the chapel alone.

"It's so cold."

Linsay hugged his shoulders and shivered.

Although he had already stayed in the small chapel for two days, this was the first time he observed the scene in the chapel.

The small chapel was quiet, with no one inside except Linsay.

Two rows of well-maintained wooden benches were neatly arranged on the gray stone floor, facing the main altar, creating a solemn and dignified atmosphere. But in the corner by the wall, there were also some old curtains and fabrics.

There were no stained-glass windows on the dome and walls.

The chapel only had some round windows near the ceiling, through which a few beams of winter sunlight slanted in, illuminating the dust floating in the air and the exposed main beams of the church.

The only thing that caught the eye

Was the statue behind the main altar, a straight line standing in a circle.

"This... is probably a symbol of faith, like a cross?"

Linsay muttered to himself.

At this moment, footsteps came from the church's main door.

He turned around and saw two guards in simple armor, carrying weapons, who politely said as soon as they entered:

"Hello, we'll wait for Lady Red Moon here... Hmm?"

Seeing Linsay's appearance, the two guards were stunned.

The town of Hidden Frontier was not small, but as guards patrolling the entire town, even if they couldn't name everyone, they had a general impression of the townspeople's appearances.

Linsay was a face they had never seen before.

Children from ordinary families, at this age, even if they played and fought on the streets, the guards should have seen them at least once.

The two guards exchanged glances and immediately had a plan in mind.

The fatter one of them approached Linsay, his expression somewhat nervous, and asked:

"Are you the Awakened that Lady Red Moon found?"

Through the guard's question, Linsay learned that Lady Red Moon was the name of the nun who had helped him.

But more importantly, the guard knew his identity as an Awakened.

Linsay did not want the guard to be so nervous when talking to him, so he quickly explained:

"Sir, I only awakened recently and haven't mastered any extraordinary skills."

"That's not important!" The guard interrupted Linsay, "It's been a long time since anyone from outside has come here, let alone an Awakened! You should go see the Lord immediately, follow me!"

When he said these forceful words, the guard was clearly afraid.

But thinking of the importance of an Awakened and looking at the young child in front of him, he insisted on taking Linsay away without further ado.

Linsay instinctively took two steps back.

Compared to the nun who had taken good care of him, he knew nothing about this lord.

However, after realizing his situation, Linsay was prepared to accept reality.

In Hidden Frontier, this town was the only civilized world, and Linsay could not avoid interacting with it no matter what he did.

Moreover, refusing the guards would be tantamount to challenging the lord here.

"No need to take him away."

Just as Linsay was about to leave with the guards, the nun's deep voice sounded from the main door of the chapel.

She walked steadily and slowly to the two guards:

"Tell Anri that this child is now a member of the Death School, my godchild."

The nun stood at the church door.

Her black eyes gazed at the two guards, showing no emotion.

This scene instantly made the atmosphere silent, and the surrounding air was still.

The two guards were stunned for a few seconds, then immediately nodded vigorously:

"Lady Red Moon, we understand."

Their mission to the church had failed, but the guards did not dare to turn and leave immediately.

They respectfully bowed to the nun, fulfilling the necessary etiquette, before leaving together.
