Hearing the words of Old Lady Bai, the Li-named man with a birthmark and the Wang-named man both slightly stiffened. They exchanged a glance, and the man with the birthmark spoke up, "Old Lady Bai, the compensation is secondary. The main issue is that these kids are too rowdy, and the neighbors can't really take it anymore!"
"We will educate them."
Old Lady Bai stood up and said to Aunt Chen, "Aunt Chen, go with them and see how much compensation is needed."
"This..."
The two men saw that Old Lady Bai was not going to engage with them and was clearly trying to dismiss them, so they were truly annoyed but finally left in a huff, with Aunt Chen following them.
"Grandma Bai, I don't believe Mazi would beat a dog to death."
Yang Qi spoke up, wanting to stop the men from leaving. He felt that something was amiss.
"Uh-huh, I didn't, I didn't!"
The yellow Mazi called out again upon hearing this.
"Alright, I know the truth in my heart. But what's the point of arguing with them? It's impossible to explain clearly." Old Lady Bai said calmly.
Yang Qi, upon hearing this, thought for a moment and understood Old Lady Bai's meaning. Given Mazi's special nature, no matter what they said, it wouldn't help unless there was concrete evidence. But these two men, regardless of their intentions, wouldn't leave any evidence. Old Lady Bai's approach was wise yet helpless.
"What are these two men trying to do, falsely accusing Mazi?"
This made Yang Qi even more confused.
Regarding Yang Qi's unwavering trust in Mazi and his question, Old Lady Bai did not answer. Instead, she walked over to Yang Qi, looked at him intently, and said slowly, "Today, you are very different."
"Oh, I was just about to tell you, but you said you wanted to take a nap, so it was delayed."
Yang Qi, upon hearing this question, immediately perked up and said excitedly, "Grandma Bai, I'm completely cured. My body is no longer cold, and my mind is no longer dull."
Old Lady Bai was taken aback, her calm eyes showing a hint of brightness. The wrinkles around her eyes, which had momentarily tightened, relaxed, and her voice became slightly hoarse, "Child, you were never dull."
"Uh-huh."
Yang Qi nodded vigorously, and tears naturally welled up in his eyes, a smile on his lips.
"This is good news, why are you crying!"
Old Lady Bai scolded Yang Qi sternly, but her voice trembled.
Yang Qi's illness had always been very strange, and no matter how many doctors they saw, nothing helped. This strange illness was now cured, which seemed not strange at all. Old Lady Bai asked about Yang Qi's condition and, after confirming that he was truly cured, was extremely happy.
"Since you are cured, you should help me and Aunt Chen with the courtyard's affairs. You are the oldest child here."
Old Lady Bai, to change the topic and avoid her tears of excitement, said to Yang Qi, "Take Mazi back to the courtyard. Also, keep an eye on the other kids and make sure they don't cause trouble outside."
"Those two men today were..."
"Alright, don't worry about it. Just keep an eye on the kids."
Old Lady Bai waved her hand, signaling Yang Qi to take Mazi inside. Seeing this, Yang Qi had no choice but to comply. Back in the courtyard, Yang Qi pulled Mazi aside and asked what had happened. Mazi, who spoke unclearly, only managed to convey that he was walking on the road when those two men suddenly pulled him there, and then the incident occurred. Yang Qi knew Mazi's character well and was certain it was true. The more he thought about it, the more bizarre it seemed. Could those two men be trying to extort money?
For the rest of the afternoon, Yang Qi stayed in the courtyard, helping to take care of the children. The tasks were numerous and detailed, but Yang Qi handled them efficiently. He had done this before and was now even more adept, earning praise from Aunt Chen several times. Most of the children in the courtyard had physical issues, and those who noticed Yang Qi's changes were happy, though they didn't think much of it.
Seeing the children in the courtyard, some with mobility issues and others with mental disabilities, Yang Qi felt a pang of sadness. He silently vowed to help them, just as Old Lady Bai had helped him. This was something he must do. Now that he had the list of superpowers, he was determined to make it happen.
" Ding!"
As he was about to finish his afternoon tasks, a notification sounded in his mind: "Ding! Triggered mission: Treat the illnesses of the children in the courtyard."
"Mission completion reward: Receive corresponding rewards for each person treated, based on the treatment's effectiveness."
"Mission failure penalty: None."
Yang Qi was taken aback but then overjoyed. He was not happy because of the rewards or lack of penalties, but because the mission's prompt indirectly told him that the children's illnesses could be cured using the superpowers.
"I must work hard to improve my superpower level and find ways to activate other superpowers!"
Yang Qi clenched his fist, extremely excited.
After dinner, Old Lady Bai called Yang Qi over, and they chatted for a while. She had originally decided to give him the items she found on him when she picked him up, but after some thought, she decided to wait until after he graduated from high school. Born into a wealthy family, Old Lady Bai could see the intricacy of the items and understood the potential implications. She decided to observe Yang Qi for a while longer. If he truly improved and continued to get better, then some things and some matters should be revealed to him.
After chatting, Yang Qi went back to the courtyard to put the children to bed. As usual, he then went to the bookstore alone. He had developed the habit of reading dull books in the bookstore to reduce his headaches. He still kept this habit and, now that he had a photographic memory, he read more books to arm himself with knowledge.
Someone once said, "If you are foolish, read more books; if you are ugly, read more books; if you are poor, read even more books." This saying was probably true.
It was nearly nine o'clock, and Yang Qi had been reading for about three hours. Just as he was about to meditate and practice [Psychokinesis], he heard a rustling sound in the bookstore. Looking over, he saw Mazi sneaking through the bookstore, about to leave, and occasionally checking to see if Yang Qi was paying attention.
"What is this little guy doing so late?"
Yang Qi thought to himself. Seeing Mazi leave the bookstore, he immediately got up and followed. Seeing the boy run towards the house of the Li-named man with the birthmark, Yang Qi quickly caught up, grabbed Mazi, and pulled him into a corner, saying, "Mazi, what are you doing?"
"Bad guys, I want to beat the bad guys."
Mazi, seeing it was Yang Qi, said in a muffled voice.
Yang Qi, torn between laughter and tears, didn't know if the boy was enduring something or suddenly felt upset. He whispered, "What bad guys? Come home with me, don't cause trouble for Grandma."
"Unhappy."
Mazi tried to struggle but couldn't break free from Yang Qi's grip.
"Brother and Aunt Chen, as well as Grandma, all believe you didn't do it. Don't be upset. Just behave for a while and don't cause trouble outside. I will clear your name, okay?"
Yang Qi wasn't sure if Mazi truly understood, but he had to say it. If Mazi kept running out at night, who knew what trouble he might cause. He also needed to warn Aunt Chen.
Just as Mazi was about to say something, Yang Qi suddenly covered his mouth and quickly took him to another dark corner.
"Shh."
Yang Qi whispered, then carefully looked over. Two men were walking by, the Li-named man with the birthmark and the Wang-named man.
"Old Wang, don't be too soft-hearted. It's foolish not to make money when you can! The kids from the orphanage have been causing trouble for a long time. If we help create more trouble, no one will suspect us. It doesn't have to be a big deal, just enough to make the neighbors complain. When everyone starts talking, it will be hard to drive away that stubborn old lady."
The Li-named man with the birthmark, clearly drunk, staggered as he walked, supported by the Wang-named man. He gestured with his hands, saying, "That old lady has so many orphans to take care of. She will have to sell this house to raise money to find a new place."
"Brother Li, what if the old lady, in a fit of desperation, sends the kids to a real orphanage and stays in the house alone until she dies?"
"You don't understand that old lady. She is stubborn and won't abandon the kids. Besides, her stubbornness won't allow her to tolerate the neighbors' gossip. She will definitely sell the house. Once the house is sold, and someone buys it, you can count your money. Fifty thousand each, fifty thousand per person, what better way to make money!"
The man with the birthmark became more animated as he spoke, spitting out his words: "Even if this plan doesn't work, I have many other tricks up my sleeve."
"Sure, sure, I'll follow Brother Li's lead. But it's strange, I wonder why that person wants to buy the courtyard so badly. Brother Li, we're home, be careful." Old Wang helped the man with the birthmark into the house. After a few steps, the man with the birthmark vomited, and his family came out to help.
At that moment, Yang Qi had already taken Mazi away from the corner and was heading back, silent all the way. His mind kept replaying the conversation he had just overheard, his expression growing more serious.
After gently putting Mazi to bed, Yang Qi went out again, staying near the house of the man with the birthmark for a while. Seeing no further conversation, he returned to the bookstore and meditated, entering a dream state.
The next day, after doing what he needed to do, Yang Qi probed Aunt Chen, asking if anyone had come to buy the house recently. Aunt Chen confirmed that someone had, but Old Lady Bai had directly refused, even though the offer was not low, far above market value.
This gave Yang Qi a clearer idea. Someone, for some unknown reason, wanted to buy the house and, after failing, had enlisted the help of the Li-named and Wang-named men.
After much thought, Yang Qi went to Old Lady Bai and told her about what had happened the night before.
