The train heading to Jinmen City whistled and chugged out of the station with a heavy panting sound.
The green carriages, due to the expansion gaps between the tracks, always made a rhythmic clanging noise when running, though the noise was loud, to Xiao Ren it sounded like a grand march playing in his ears.
Going out of the province to make an arrest was an opportunity not every intern could have.
"Han Special Envoy, you sit inside. Meng, you sit inside too."
"Inside or outside, it’s the same. Switching is troublesome."
"You’re carrying guns, it’s safer to sit inside." Xiao Ren looked around, deliberately lowering his voice, though it wasn’t necessary since few people here could understand Sigan dialect.
The tickets were bought by Aunt Lu through someone. This train was so busy that even with connections on the railway, it was hard to get a sleeper, unless one was willing to wait two days in Donghai. With the police station’s affairs, one couldn’t stay out for long. A seat was fine, better than standing.
Losing money or even people was no big deal, but losing the gun was unacceptable.
The young man made sense, Han Bo smiled and sat down by the window with Chen Meng, who still had the old gun.
Aunt Lu’s acquaintance couldn’t help get a sleeper, but the seat arrangement was good.
Four people sat together, facing each other, two on each side, unlike the aisle where three people sat in a row. Just out of the station, the carriage wasn’t crowded, with many seats empty, but it would be full by the time they reached Jiangcheng.
Dozens of tea eggs weren’t finished, and his mother had prepared several plastic bags of food, so they probably wouldn’t need to buy meals along the way.
It was Mi Jinlong’s first time on a train, and he found it very novel. He couldn’t sit still, walking from one end to the other, even opening the toilet door to take a look. Wearing a cheap suit that didn’t fit well, with the sleeve labels still on, he looked somewhat out of place.
Looking around and wandering everywhere, the train police and conductors found him suspicious and stopped to check his ticket several times, even asking for his ID.
Chen Meng found it quite amusing, looking back and covering his mouth, he said, "Han Special Envoy, Old Mi is caught again."
"I was like him the first time I took a train, new and curious."
Xiao Ren chuckled, "I’m also taking it for the first time."
After a day and a night, Chen Meng felt like he was dreaming, unable to believe that his superior’s family was so wealthy. He said, "Han Special Envoy, running a company and doing renovation projects in Donghai is more promising than this job. In big cities, people say, 'I’d rather have a bed in Donghai than a house in Sigan.' If it were me, I wouldn’t be a special envoy, I’d have come to Donghai to be a general manager long ago."
"Yeah, how much does a special envoy earn a month?"
Xiao Ren nodded, finding it hard to understand why his superior would stay in the countryside to suffer.
Han Bo put down the law book he was reading to pass the time and smiled, "I like this job, I like the sense of achievement from bringing criminals to justice. I can be a police officer and solve cases in my hometown, but here in Donghai, I can only be a contractor. It’s that simple."
This job is nothing like what’s shown in movies and TV, especially in grassroots police stations, where most of the work is repetitive, and even solving cases is often trivial.
Long working hours, day and night, 5 days a week plus 2, irregular life, low pay, and difficult promotions, most people remain ordinary police officers until retirement. He had better choices but made this decision, it’s not easy.
Chen Meng sighed, "Your family’s economic conditions are good, you can pursue your ideals. I have no choice, served four years in the army, but by the time I retired, I was already outdated. The longer I stayed in the military, the more lost I felt when I returned to society. I don’t know what else I can do besides this job."
Three years in the army, four years in the air force.
He was in the air force and stayed in the military for four years. With the reform and opening up, changes outside were rapid, and four years was enough to make one feel out of touch with society.
As a leader, one must consider the subordinates. Han Bo smiled, "After we finish this task, I’ll run around the bureau more, see if I can help you get your positions sooner. You also need to work hard, both in your job and in your studies, that will make it easier for me to speak up for you."
"Thank you, Han Special Envoy, I will work hard."
Taking this opportunity to chat with his subordinates, when tired, he read a book, and when tired of reading, he took a nap on the small table. Unconsciously, seven or eight hours passed. Outside the window was pitch black, the carriage was packed, people squeezed together, the smell was terrible, and even the food carts couldn’t pass through.
Police are human too, they can lose things or even be stolen from.
They switched seats to rest, taking turns to watch the luggage, always keeping two people awake.
"Don’t sleep, don’t sleep, the train is entering Huizhang territory. There are more thieves at these stations, stay alert, keep your luggage safe. Whose bag is this? Take it down, it’s dangerous to leave it like that, what if it falls and hurts someone..."
The train police squeezed through the crowd, heading to carriage 9, loudly reminding passengers to be cautious with their belongings.
They run on the railway every day, so if they say it’s not safe, there must be a reason. Han Bo yawned and patted Mi Jinlong’s shoulder, "Old Mi, wake up, get something to eat, sleep when it’s light."
"Oh, I’ll get it."
A woman in her late twenties had been standing next to them with her child. Xiao Ren felt embarrassed and stood up, "Comrade, you sit for a while, I’ll go to the toilet."
"Thank you, thank you, I’ll give it back when you return."
"You’re welcome."
Han Bo stretched his legs and smiled gently, "Little one, so cute, your mom is tired, come to Uncle, let Uncle hold you."
He looked well-mannered and well-dressed, not like a bad person.
Standing for two or three hours, the woman’s back and waist ached, she was really tired, so she coaxed, "Junjun, go to Uncle, he’s by the window."
The little boy was clean and obviously a city child, brave, he looked back at his mother and obediently opened his arms. The table was full of food, he could choose whatever he wanted, quite interesting.
Just as he was chatting warmly with the little boy, Xiao Ren squeezed over, leaning against the back of the seat and speaking in his hometown dialect, "Han Special Envoy, there are two thieves, one is covering, the other is hiding behind and using a razor to cut people’s pockets. Meng, don’t turn around, they’re in the fourth row behind me."
Han Bo was facing him, glanced back, and asked without moving, "The one with long hair and the gray jacket?"
"No, the one covering is tall and wearing a sweater. The one acting is short and thin, you probably can’t see him."
"I saw the one covering."
They suddenly spoke in dialect, which made the woman curious, and she subconsciously took her child back.
Mi Jinlong was a bit nervous and couldn’t help but ask, "What should we do?"
If they encounter them, they must act. Notifying the train police would alert them, and they didn’t know which carriage the train police were in. Han Bo said casually, "Chen Meng, go to the toilet, raise your right hand when you confirm the target. We’ll surround them from the front and back, act together. Old Mi, don’t move, watch the luggage."
Two young thieves, not hard to deal with.
Chen Meng smiled and stood up, walking backward and shouting in Sigan Mandarin, "Excuse me, excuse me, going to the toilet, sorry, please move, thank you..."
