Oni no Ou to Chigire - Chapter 8 Pg 146, 147, 148

“It wasn’t just me, he deceived the instructor from

the main household, the other demon masters, even the head of

household. But, yesterday, we were suddenly summoned to the main

household……”

Yato’s true form had somehow been exposed

to the main household, and since Yato was stronger than the current

head of household’s demon servant, he was told he would have to

follow the traditions of the Yase family, and become the next head of

household. He told him his troubles one after the other.

“Aah,

that must be why your dog suspected I told the main household

earlier, huh. I’ll tell you this now, I didn’t say anything to

anyone.”

Hoshiai said convincingly as he rolled up the

sleeve of his shirt, exposing his arm from the elbow down. There were

bandages wrapped around most of it, with a brownish red color soaking

through here and there. It wasn’t just his arm, his cheek and

forehead were covered in something like scratches, Tokimori wondered

about them since he saw them, but he figured they probably came from

his work, so he didn’t ask. Even Tokimori couldn’t answer if anyone

had asked him about his demon master jobs.

“When your dog

came to the threaten me, I was in the middle of a job. He was a

pretty formidable demon, and that’s why I’m in this pitiful state. I

didn’t have the energy to pick a fight with the Yase family. Well,

there’s no point in me exposing or tattling on anyone. You don’t plan

on becoming the head of household then? Your dog has quite a lot of

power. He’s totally attached to you on top of that. He listens to

your commands.”

Tokimori frowned.

“I absolutely

won’t become head of household. I don’t want to, I don’t think I

could. I’m sure you know, Hoshiai-san, about the jobs the Yase family

takes on.”

“Well, yeah.”

“The jobs I do as a

demon master are all small, easy ones. I don’t want to order my demon

to harm people physically, take lives, or anything like that. Having

to arrange for the rewards demons desire……there’s no way I could

do that. I wouldn’t be able to bear it……”

“You say

small, but if it’s a request the Yase family was paid big bucks for,

even your jobs could harm someone. If it’s your fault they make a

mistake in their work, they may be at the end of their rope mentally,

and will choose suicide, are you saying that has nothing to do with

you?”

“……”

Completely at a loss, Tokimori lowered

his head. He was taught demon master’s shouldn’t think about the

results brought on by their jobs. However, he had been doing these

jobs for six years now. Even though he tried not to think about it,

he couldn’t help thinking about it. Certainly there have been people

whose lives became a disaster, thrown into chaos, by something he

did. However, the Yase family with their support from Japan since

ancient times, believe their conclusion of, the happiness of many,

outweighs the misfortune of the few, was the right thing, and was told he

used demons to help make the world a better place. If he didn’t think

about it that way, he wouldn’t be able to do his next job.

The

ceiling suddenly creaked, dust falling here and there. Perhaps

realizing Yato was angry he made Tokimori feel bad, and was trying to

destroy the apartment, Hoshiai apologized.

“……sorry.

There’s no point in blaming only you for that.”

“No, it’s

true. Even if I say I don’t want to work as a demon master, I don’t

have the courage to defy the main household.”

“They’re not

a family you could hide something like rebellion from. So why don’t

you become head of household and destroy the whole Yase family? Demon

slayers would fully support that.”

“Impossible!”

“Why?

You have the strongest demon. Even if the Yase family gathered all of

their contracted demon servants, they’d be no match for your dog. Ah,

if you’re going to destroy them though, I guess you wouldn’t need to

bother with becoming head of household.”

“Well, I

mean……I can’t.”
