Chapter 34
17 min read4,154 words
Old Hudson, holding the check, let out a long breath, his entire demeanor brightening. He insisted on dragging everyone to the cowboy bar in Palm Springs to buy them all beers.
Liu Yuxuan also wanted to see what an American bar was like, besides, he was waiting for Old Hudson to introduce him to some cowboys.
Palm Springs was not far away; it took only about ten minutes by car.
When they arrived at the bar, Liu Yuxuan was truly impressed. A massive steer head mount hung under the eaves of the bar, with long horns that were wider than the entrance, the tips of the horns even touching the windows on the sides.
Hudson, noticing Liu Yuxuan's curiosity about the horns, introduced him to the longhorn steer, a breed developed in Texas and the official symbol of Fort Worth. The horns were 7 feet long, which was quite rare even among longhorn steers.
Inside the bar, Old Hudson greeted the cowboys. The town was not very populous, and after running his ranch for so long, everyone knew him. Some cowboys were drinking beer at the bar, while others were playing poker at the tables. On the wall opposite the bar, there were musical instruments and microphones.
Old Hudson explained that the instruments were for guests or singers to perform on stage. It seemed that Old Hudson had a good impression of Liu Yuxuan, as he explained everything Liu was curious about.
Charlie and Dylank had already run to the bar, each holding a large glass of beer.
"Liu, you should try it. This is freshly brewed beer from our town. The taste is really good," Old Hudson recommended.
"Hudson, how have you been lately? Have your troubles been resolved?" Brown, the bar owner and bartender, asked.
"Thanks for your concern, Brown. It's all resolved now. I was short on some money, but now my ranch has been sold. This is the new owner of Spring Bay Ranch, Liu," Hudson answered, introducing Liu Yuxuan to Brown.
"Hello, young man. The first drink is on me," Brown said with a smile, handing Liu Yuxuan a beer.
Liu Yuxuan raised his glass, took a big sip, and gave Brown a thumbs up, saying, "It's really good, with a pure malt aroma. I think I'll be coming here more often."
"Liu, you wait here for a moment. I'll go see which cowboys are looking for work," Old Hudson said, then walked over to chat with the cowboys.
Liu Yuxuan was a bit hungry, having only eaten a hamburger at the airport after landing. He quickly finished his first beer and ordered another from Brown.
"Liu, congratulations on becoming a ranch owner. You'll have to take care of my business in the future," Charlie said, raising his glass in a toast to Liu Yuxuan.
"Of course, Charlie. You're the first friend I made in America, and you're a famous lawyer from the George Law Firm. I'll be coming to you often. It's just that your fees are quite high," Liu Yuxuan said with a smile.
"Liu, you're an angel sent by God. You don't know how the economic crisis has affected the law firm. I'm not that famous, and I mainly handle commercial cases, so I get very few clients," Charlie said, sounding frustrated.
"Charlie, think of something happy. Life will get better. At least you can still earn money. I'm currently just spending money, and I have to pay you a lot in commissions," Liu Yuxuan said, feeling a bit annoyed. American lawyers' fees were really high, typically ranging from $200 to $400 per hour. No wonder Old Hudson called a lawyer to sign the contract.
"Don't worry, I'll give you a 20% discount on commercial legal matters," Charlie said, snapping his fingers.
"Liu, if you ever want to buy another ranch or farm, contact me. I'll introduce you to the best," Dylank said, having already had several beers since arriving at the bar.
"Sure, Dylank. My first ranch was introduced by you, and I'll definitely come to you again," Liu Yuxuan said, noting that making money in America wasn't easy. Dylank was clearly drunk but still trying to secure clients. Liu Yuxuan turned to Charlie, "Is Dylank okay?"
"No problem. Dylank is very honest when he's drunk. Just don't let him drive," Charlie said nonchalantly.
At this moment, Old Hudson led two cowboys over and introduced them to Liu Yuxuan, "The one on the left is Garcia, and the one on the right is Rodriguez. They are both excellent cowboys. Don't let their youth fool you; they've been cowboys for five to six years. You can trust them with your ranch."
"Hello, Garcia and Rodriguez. How about a beer?" Liu Yuxuan said, signaling Brown to bring two beers without waiting for their response.
"Hudson, how is the salary usually paid around here? What's the average?" Liu Yuxuan asked.
"About $700 to $800 per week, plus health insurance," Hudson explained.
"OK, Garcia and Rodriguez, I'll pay you $900 per week and cover your health insurance. How does that sound?" Liu Yuxuan asked the two.
"Thank you so much, boss," Garcia said, and Rodriguez nodded in agreement. They were very satisfied with the salary Liu Yuxuan offered, as finding a job as a cowboy in Texas was not easy, especially with the current downturn in the livestock industry.
"Don't thank me so soon. I'm new to ranching and don't know much, so I'll need your help. If there's anything I need to do or pay attention to, please remind me. After all, I need to make money to pay your salaries, right?" Liu Yuxuan said seriously. He wasn't just being generous; he needed these cowboys to actively give him advice, as he knew nothing about running a ranch in America.
"Don't worry, boss. We'll take care of the ranch. We won't let you down," Garcia said, patting his chest.
"Alright, meet me at the ranch at 9 AM tomorrow. I'll have the contracts ready."
"Sure, boss. We'll be there on time," Garcia said, nudging Rodriguez. "This guy is great in every way, just a bit shy," Garcia thought. Rodriguez had been nodding in agreement with him, and he was worried that Rodriguez would leave a bad impression on the new boss.
Liu Yuxuan noticed Garcia's small gesture and smiled at Rodriguez, "Don't worry, Rodriguez. You don't need to be so formal with me. Treat me like a friend as long as you take care of the ranch."
Rodriguez nodded shyly. Garcia was a bit embarrassed that his boss had noticed his gesture but explained, "Boss, Rodriguez wasn't always like this. He's been herding in the mountains for the past few years, so he's just not used to interacting with many people."
"Don't worry, I have no other intentions. Since you're joining the ranch, I'll cover the drinks tonight as a welcome party for you," Liu Yuxuan said, essentially buying their loyalty. The drinks weren't expensive, and the bar, being near the ranch, was frequented by cowboys who drank a lot of cheap beer.
The other cowboys also raised their glasses to celebrate Garcia and Rodriguez finding new jobs.
