(Thank you, Mist Angel, for the tip.)
The rooster's crow at dawn woke the quiet village of Kaoshan.
After spending a lot of time with Liu Yuxuan, Misha no longer felt uncomfortable with the congee and pickles for breakfast.
"Yuxuan, why don't you raise some chickens in the farm?" Misha asked, thinking of the roosters she saw wandering around the yard and the delicious chicken and mushroom stew they had for dinner last night.
"I'll start raising them when I get back. It was my first time setting up a farm, and I didn't have any experience. Neither did Garcia and the others remind me," Liu Yuxuan said sheepishly.
He had thought that a normal farm would only raise cows and sheep, and had forgotten about raising chickens.
Zhao Yan and Wang Mingyuan both arrived early. When Liu Yuxuan introduced Misha to them, they were very pleased. They hadn't expected that Liu Yuxuan would solve his lifelong problem after just a few months in the United States.
Zhao Yan seemed much more capable, and Wang Mingyuan, after several months of working as a vice-county magistrate, had become much more steady. Liu Yuxuan was very happy to see the changes in both of them.
"So, Xuanzi, is life in the U.S. very happy?" Zhao Yan asked with a grin.
"Do you want to know? If you want to, I can take Yuan Yuan and the kids over when I have time." Liu Yuxuan said, then realized he hadn't seen Zhao Yan's child and asked, "Why didn't you bring the child over? I haven't seen him yet."
"Hehe, he's just over a month old. My dad is watching him closely, always keeping an eye on him at home." Since the baby was born, Zhao's father was overjoyed and had no time to bother Zhao Yan, who felt much more relaxed. Otherwise, Zhao's father would nag him whenever he had the chance.
"I've seen him, he's very healthy. I went to see him when he was a month old, and Uncle Zhao was very happy," Wang Mingyuan said from the side.
"Fatso, have you thought about going to the U.S.?" Liu Yuxuan asked.
"I don't mind, but it mainly depends on the old man. I have to follow orders. By the way, when are your parents going over?" Zhao Yan asked.
"I'll take them over this time. When we get back, Yunhai and his wife will stay in the country. They'll go over after everything is arranged," Liu Yuxuan said.
"Will the domestic planting not be affected?" Wang Mingyuan asked, which was his main concern. The current planting model had already attracted attention from higher-ups. If it succeeds this year, he might be transferred to another province next year and appointed as a county magistrate or vice-mayor.
"Don't worry, Mingyuan. It will be the same as before I left. I plan to invest in another farm in the U.S., and Yunhai will need to go over to manage it," Liu Yuxuan explained, also to reassure Wang Mingyuan.
"When are you going to the provincial capital to visit? My dad has been talking about you since he heard you're back," Wang Mingyuan asked, relieved by the positive answer.
"Tomorrow, I still need to meet with the villagers today. Otherwise, they won't be at ease," Liu Yuxuan said after some thought.
The villagers were very concerned about Liu Yuxuan's return. In the short year that Liu Yuxuan had been back in the village, he had created many miracles. Everyone knew that the money he had shared from his own profits had helped them become wealthy. Without Liu Yuxuan's seeds and technology, they would still be working hard in the fields, hoping for a better future.
Now, their sons and husbands no longer had to go out to work. They could stay at home, tending to the contracted land, earning more than they would from working, and with less effort.
For farmers, working the land was their duty.
"Uncle Tianlai, how is your health recently?" Liu Yuxuan asked the village chief, Liu Tianlai, who had come to visit.
"Yuxuan, stay a few more days. The villagers really miss you. Today, everyone has turned over a new leaf, and they all want to invite you to their homes for a meal to thank you," Liu Tianlai said. "It's a pity. If you hadn't gone to the U.S., you could have been the village chief, and the villagers' lives would have been even better."
"Uncle Tianlai, don't say that. Under your leadership, our village has already done very well. I just helped everyone find some work. If I were the village chief, I might have messed things up after a couple of years, and the village would need someone like you to lead it," Liu Yuxuan said, having never considered being the village chief.
"By the way, how is Secretary Meng?" Liu Yuxuan asked, as he hadn't seen Secretary Meng this time.
Hearing Liu Yuxuan mention Secretary Meng, Liu Tianlai smiled. "Not long after you left, her daughter took her to the provincial capital. Actually, Old Meng has always been attached to the village. Otherwise, she would have gone to the provincial capital long ago. Now that the villagers are following you, Old Meng can enjoy her life."
"Uncle Tianlai, do the villagers who didn't plant watermelons this year have any complaints?" Liu Yuxuan asked.
Liu Tianlai glared and said, "Complaints? Who dares? They would be criticized by the villagers. Besides, those who didn't plant watermelons planted vegetables, and they've already sold two batches, earning a lot of money."
Planting watermelons was highly profitable, but planting vegetables was less profitable but more sustainable. Liu Yuxuan was afraid that some villagers might be envious and have complaints. Hearing Liu Tianlai's words, he felt reassured.
"Uncle Tianlai, come in and sit down. Mingyuan is inside," Liu Yuxuan invited.
"Alright, I'll go in and chat with County Magistrate Mingyuan. He's really good. I've heard he's very capable, but he might be transferred next year. I wonder what the new one will be like," Liu Tianlai said, knowing that many people in the county had already heard about Wang Mingyuan's possible transfer. After all, even in a small county, there were always connections.
Hearing Liu Tianlai's concern, Liu Yuxuan smiled and said, "Don't worry, Uncle Tianlai. Whoever comes will have to follow our rules."
"Good boy, that's a clear statement. Uncle is happy to hear that," Liu Tianlai said, patting Liu Yuxuan's shoulder and going inside.
In no time, Liu Yuxuan's courtyard was filled with people, and many more were gathered outside the gate.
Seeing this, Liu Yuxuan moved a table and climbed on top of it.
"Everyone, listen to me for a moment."
Hearing Liu Yuxuan's voice, everyone looked up.
"Seeing all of you, I'm truly happy. When I was in the U.S., I missed our home-cooked pickled cabbage and pork ribs, and steamed buns with beans."
"Your concern for me is deeply appreciated. Please tell everyone that my courtyard is too small, and the walls are almost broken. Let's gather at the village square tonight. No one should eat beforehand. We'll have a good chat tonight."
The villagers all cheered, saying they would definitely come, even if they had important matters to attend to. They also said that the villagers would pay for the gathering, not letting Liu Yuxuan spend any money.
How could Liu Yuxuan agree to that? He quickly said, "Villagers, don't argue with me. It's not that I'm rich. I'm truly grateful to all of you."
"When I was young, I was naughty and caused a lot of trouble. No one ever held it against me. I remember fighting with Li Ergo when we were young. I lost and threw a toad into his house, scaring Aunt Li and breaking her leg. Even then, she didn't make me pay for the medical expenses. I remember all the good things you've done for me."
"There will be many more opportunities. When I come back next time, I'll visit each of your homes. If anyone doesn't serve me good food, I'll be upset."
Some of the older villagers knew this boy well. He had caused a lot of trouble when he was young, but they never thought he would become so successful. If he hadn't mentioned it, they might not have remembered.
