With everything prepared, Mufeng, bare-chested, sat in the center of the green magic array in front of Skassa, gently closing his eyes. He waited for the elder to perform the rune inscription. The quality of the rune inscription would greatly affect the growth potential of the Demon Hunter role.
The process of rune inscription was excruciatingly painful, requiring a sharp silver needle dipped in demon blood to be pricked into the skin, one by one, to form a specific pattern, granting the Demon Hunter greater power.
"Hisss..." When Skassa pricked the first needle, Mufeng let out a barely audible groan. The pain was indeed unbearable. He had never gotten a tattoo in real life, but he had experienced it in the game first. Was this what it felt like to join the underworld? It seemed the Demon Hunters were a black society organization...
To better experience the game, Mufeng had previously set his pain perception to 10%.
A certain level of pain perception was beneficial. When a knife slashes, a person instinctively dodges because the body remembers that sharp objects are dangerous. This instinct comes from the memory of pain. By setting the pain perception to a certain level, the brain knows that a slash will hurt, and naturally commands the body to dodge. This reflex is more important than conscious thought and reaction speed.
For Mufeng, reflexes were indispensable. With his positioning and evasion skills, plus the newly mastered free mode techniques, he was rarely hit. However, for needle pricks... it was better to turn it off temporarily.
"System alert: The player is currently undertaking a hidden quest, 'The Hidden Secrets of Silvara.' If the pain system is turned off, the success rate of the rune inscription will decrease by 30%. If the pain perception is set to 50%, the success rate will be 75%!"
"..." Mufeng was speechless, never expecting such a situation. All he wanted to say to the system was: "fuck!"
Of course, he couldn't actually say it out loud. Mufeng reluctantly set his pain perception to 50%... a higher success rate was always better.
"This is a step every Demon Hunter must go through. Without rune inscription, one cannot truly be called a Demon Hunter," Elder Skassa said. The blood of the Infernal was a fiery red, forming an indelible mark on Mufeng's body.
"The arrival of the Demon Legion was like a disaster. No one knew where they came from or why they came to this world. They appeared and began to slaughter and destroy everything in sight. The initial panic cost us many lives. Finally, under the leadership of a few new heroes, we launched a counterattack. One of these heroes was the founder of the Demon Hunter class." Skassa, skilled in Infernal rune inscription, took the opportunity to share some ancient secrets with Mufeng.
"Although he bravely killed the powerful demon invading his homeland, his brother fell in a pool of blood to protect him. To honor his fallen brother, he picked up his brother's longsword and mastered the dual-wielding style. He had the demon blood pricked into his body, remembering the pain and strengthening himself. He blinded himself with daggers burning with hellfire to gain the ability to track demons. A powerful new class, the Demon Hunter, was born! The mission of the Demon Hunter is to track and hunt demons, dedicating everything to the survival of the elves!"
"Uh-huh..." The sharp needle pricked Mufeng's body repeatedly, but he didn't make a sound. He even managed to chat with Elder Skassa.
On his back, chest, and arms, a vague outline of the magic array began to take shape.
"Phew..." Elder Skassa finally breathed a sigh of relief, completing the initial pattern of the complex array with the Infernal blood. He had visualized every detail in his mind countless times and experimented many times.
"System alert: Congratulations, player, you have completed the first step of the rune inscription, gaining an ability boost. Fire spell damage increased by 10%, and fire damage resistance increased by 5%." The system notification sounded. It was this kind of ability. But thinking about it, it made sense, as the Infernal was just a low-level demon that could only cast a fireball. Few Demon Hunters who obtained Infernal blood would actually go through with the inscription, probably just deleting their account and starting over.
"This is just the first step. The next steps will be increasingly difficult, but the abilities you gain will also become more powerful." Skassa then opened the blood of the Hell Reaver. The excruciating pain returned. At 50% pain perception, each needle prick was unbearable. It was hard to imagine if an ordinary person received such a hidden quest, whether they would have the courage to endure it!
"System alert: Congratulations, player, you have completed the second step of the rune inscription, gaining an ability boost. Spell Reap: Each attack reduces the target's maximum mana by 3% and deals equal damage! Ineffective against boss-level monsters." So strong! Although it was ineffective against bosses, with this ability, attacking mages would be much easier.
"Third step... you must endure!" At this point, Mufeng's back had additional blue patterns representing the Hell Reaver. The array became more complete. After a short rest, Skassa finally opened the third bottle of blood, the epic blood of Kael.
Mufeng nodded silently, waiting for the new pain. Skassa was filled with admiration for Mufeng's willpower. To remain still through thousands of needle pricks was a testament to his ironclad resolve. He was determined to ensure the success of the inscription, helping Mufeng on the path to becoming a supreme powerhouse!
Kael's blood was epic, and the inscription was extremely difficult, requiring extreme caution with each needle. When the last needle was pricked, Skassa almost collapsed from mental exhaustion. Mufeng was also nearing his limit.
"System alert: Congratulations, player, you have completed the third step of the rune inscription, gaining an ability boost. Iron Body: Attack power increased by 5%, and 5% of physical damage received is reflected back to the attacker." A direct attack boost and damage reflection? Truly befitting the epic quality and the difficulty of obtaining this blood!
"Although it's good for me, I can hardly believe you remained still through such pain! Your willpower is truly remarkable..." Skassa genuinely admired Mufeng. He couldn't believe he had endured to this extent, without a sound or a muscle twitch! At this point, Mufeng's back had additional beautiful silver runes!
"If you have a reason that makes you determined to endure, it's not that difficult. My desire for strength now surpasses even my need to breathe!" Mufeng managed a weak smile, his face pale.
The reason driving him was one: revenge! The events in the Trial Cave had confirmed that the game would affect the mysterious crystal on his chest. He hoped to become stronger, and as long as he could gain the power needed for revenge, he could endure anything!
After a ten-minute rest, Skassa finally picked up the most important bottle of blood, Silvara's blood!
"The last bottle, and the one most likely to fail. Are you ready?"
"I'm always ready," Mufeng replied.
"Alright..." Skassa opened the bottle containing Silvara's blood.
"Ah!~" Without warning, a shrill scream echoed as a black gas rapidly emerged from the bottle, forming a terrifying face in the air—Silvara, filled with resentment and unwillingness.
"Bad, this is a bottle of blood filled with resentment and curses! What did you do to her?" Skassa was shocked.
"Nothing much, just killed her in ten seconds," Mufeng said nonchalantly, as if talking about someone else. He couldn't control that power yet. Power he couldn't control wasn't his own!
"Ten... ten seconds?" Skassa was incredulous. Even though he didn't know Silvara's exact level, a demon that could drop legendary blood... this guy had done it in ten seconds...
Could even the legendary heroes of old have done that at Mufeng's level? Skassa was determined to ensure the success of the inscription, even if it cost him his life!
"What, is it troublesome?" Mufeng asked nervously when he saw Skassa frown. If the blood couldn't be used, it would be a disaster.
"Yes, cursed blood makes the inscription much more difficult. But don't worry, I will make sure you succeed!" Skassa said firmly, as if making a resolution.
"Then let's start." Seeing Skassa's determination, Mufeng trusted the old druid elder.
"Ah!~" The shrill screaming continued, but Skassa ignored it. He calmly dipped the silver needle and pricked Mufeng's back.
"What's happening?" After a dozen pricks, Mufeng suddenly spoke.
"What's wrong?" Skassa asked, wondering if something was amiss.
"I feel the skin where you pricked me is moving on its own!"
"Really!" After checking, Skassa confirmed it was true. "The cursed blood is causing this. Don't be alarmed. I'm about to speed up, and I won't be able to pay attention to you. You must not move, or it will all be for nothing!"
"Got it!" Mufeng nodded, tensing his muscles, ready for the storm of pricks!
"Swish, swish, swish!" Skassa's silver needle moved at lightning speed between the blood bottle and Mufeng's body, leaving countless afterimages. Mufeng endured the most intense pain yet!
Originally, the red, blue, and silver patterns on Mufeng's body seemed unrelated. But with the addition of gold, it was like the final touch, bringing the entire array to life, perfectly merging into a complex and beautiful pattern!
"Phew..." Skassa dropped the silver needle, finally completing it. The golden patterns added to the intricate design covering Mufeng's body formed a stunning magic array.
"Ah!~" The shrill screaming continued. Silvara's blood had all transferred to Mufeng's body, and his golden skin began to twist uncontrollably, gradually forming a familiar face. The unnatural twisting almost separated his flesh from his body!
"Indeed, I must take this step!" Skassa's cloudy eyes shone with a brilliant green light. The entire treehouse and the top of the giant tree were blasted away by the explosive energy, leaving only the area with the magic array intact. A few unlucky new Demon Hunters, who had just completed the Trial Cave quest, were walking down a long staircase and were knocked off by the explosion! Skassa also disappeared from the spot!
"Roar!~" A shrill dragon roar echoed, and a massive green dragon appeared in the sky, its body almost covering the entire valley!
Everyone looked up at the terrifying dragon, feeling immense pressure from its powerful aura. Players were puzzled, wondering why a dragon would appear in the newbie village, suspecting it was a hidden quest. They rushed over in a frenzy.
"Sk... Skassa?" The dragon didn't answer Mufeng but instead breathed a green mist from its mouth.
The green mist, filled with natural energy, enveloped Mufeng's body, and the twisted flesh gradually relaxed.
Thank goodness... Seeing his method was effective, Skassa finally relaxed.
"Ah!~" But to his surprise, the skin, which had just calmed down, began to twist again, even more severely this time. Red blood lines appeared on Mufeng's back, and the painstakingly inscribed array was on the verge of collapsing! Mufeng fell to the ground in pain.
"No way!" Seeing his efforts and dreams about to be shattered, Skassa steeled himself and spat out a dark green bead!
The bead shattered in front of Mufeng, turning into countless sparkling green star fragments that merged into his body. The out-of-control flesh finally stabilized again.
"Ah!~ Why! Why are you stopping me, is it worth it?" A black smoke was forced out of Mufeng's body, forming Silvara's face in the air, which finally dissipated in frustration.
"System alert: Congratulations, player, you have completed the fourth step of the rune inscription, gaining an ability boost and the Dragon's Blessing!
Phantom Strike: Attack speed increased by 20%, and there is a 10% chance to create a phantom that mimics the last attack, dealing equal damage 0.5 seconds later.
Dragon's Blessing: The epic druid Skassa shattered the essence of a dragon and infused it into your body, granting you the Dragon's Blessing. Health increased by 100%, and healing effects are doubled! Newbie quest 'Trial Cave' and hidden quest 'The Hidden Secrets of Silvara' completed, earning 200 gold and 20,000 experience points."
