If Li Tian's twenty years of life were to be described in four words, they would undoubtedly be: unbearably miserable.
Standing at the cusp of his 20th year, he had once harbored one dream after another. For example, he too wanted to have a day of rapid success, he too wanted a beautiful girlfriend by his side, and he too wanted to travel the world in a car... But all these dreams were shattered by reality.
Growing up in an orphanage, he didn't even know who his parents were. The children around him, who were about his age, mocked him, calling him a child with parents who gave birth but did not raise him.
Since he left the orphanage at the age of 13, Li Tian had been living on his own.
He worked part-time while attending school, enduring until high school. Despite his good grades, he could no longer afford to continue his education, so he dropped out.
Over the years in Liao City, Li Tian learned to be self-sufficient and how to survive.
Although life was unbearably hard for him, he had to keep living. Was it true that the poor should just die?
Now, Li Tian worked as a waiter in a small restaurant in Liao City. He worked tirelessly every day, and the boss paid him 20 yuan a day, from 8 in the morning to 9 at night.
Although it was tough, Li Tian was satisfied. At least the 20 yuan was enough for him to live in Liao City, a small county where even birds wouldn't defecate.
After finishing his work for the day, which included tidying up the tables and mopping the floor, Li Tian finally ended his shift.
The person who had been supervising Li Tian's work all along was a fat, bulky man named Wang Qiang, the owner of the restaurant.
Wang Qiang was notoriously stingy. Apart from himself, Li Tian was the only one working in the restaurant. In other words, serving dishes, washing dishes, picking vegetables, sweeping the floor, and all other tasks were done by Li Tian.
After just over a month, Li Tian could no longer bear it.
"Hey, Li Tian, shouldn't you clean that glass over there? It looks so dirty," the fat Wang Qiang pointed to the glass that Li Tian had just cleaned.
That glass was just cleaned by Li Tian, and now this damn fat man was asking him to clean it again? How could Li Tian take it?
"That glass I just cleaned, go check it, it's like a mirror. Clean it again? It'll break," Li Tian threw the cloth to the ground.
"How do you talk to me? I'm just asking you to do some work. Don't forget, I'm the boss," the fat man said arrogantly.
Li Tian's anger flared up: "You're the boss, right?"
The fat man didn't expect Li Tian, who had always been bullied, to suddenly change his attitude and asked, "What do you mean? If I'm not the boss, are you?"
"I'm not doing this anymore, got it?" Li Tian shouted at the fat boss.
"Listen, fatso, I've put up with you for a long time. Do you think I'm your slave? I put up with it before, but now I'm in a bad mood and don't want to put up with it anymore!"
"I've worked 21 days this month. Give me my money tomorrow. If you dare to deduct a single cent, I'll expose your use of fake oil and dead pork. See how you run your restaurant then," Li Tian cursed.
The fat boss was completely stunned, not expecting Li Tian, who had always been bullied, to suddenly lash out.
"You... You... You..."
"What do you mean? Wasn't I clear enough? Fatso, I'm not doing this anymore."
Li Tian cursed, took off the old apron from his waist, and threw it to the ground, then walked into the dark night.
The fat boss stood there with a stiff face, and as he watched Li Tian's figure disappear into the distance, he cursed: "Brat, daring to talk to me like that... Damn, I curse you to be a poor bastard for life."
---
On the dark street, the streetlights flickered, and a solitary figure slowly walked along.
Yes, it was Li Tian.
Just coming out of the restaurant, he was quite happy. Did that fatso really think he wouldn't quit? I'm not doing this anymore. I don't believe I'm destined to be a waiter all my life.
He walked and muttered to himself.
On the dark street, the occasional bark of a dog could be heard, and the low, flat houses on both sides were mostly dark.
Actually, it wasn't very late, just a little past ten at night. But because Liao City was small and poor, there were almost no people out at night.
The weather was getting into late autumn, and it was a bit chilly at night. A cool breeze occasionally blew, making Li Tian, who was wearing a thin shirt, feel cold. He shivered and hurried into the dark night.
From here to the house he rented for 200 yuan, it was less than 20 minutes away. If he walked fast enough, it might take less than 10 minutes.
As Li Tian walked quickly, he suddenly felt the urge to urinate.
Looking around, Li Tian decided not to urinate on the main road but to go to the dark alley.
Who could blame him for being a civilized young man?
So, Li Tian quickly ran over, unzipped his pants, and started to urinate.
A cool breeze blew, making Li Tian feel a bit cold, and he muttered, "It seems winter is coming, it's getting colder."
As he was about to leave the alley after finishing, Li Tian suddenly felt something was wrong.
A quick glance towards the alley entrance made him notice a dark figure lying deep in the alley.
Was it a person? Or a ghost?
Li Tian felt a chill run down his spine.
Because the alley was too dark, Li Tian couldn't see clearly whether it was a person or something else.
"Who's there? Who's there?" Li Tian called out, trying to be brave.
Unfortunately, the dark figure didn't move or say a word.
This made Li Tian even more confused, wondering what was lying there.
Curiosity made Li Tian bolder, and he took a few steps into the alley.
Curiosity has harmed many people!
He quickly reached into his old jeans and pulled out a lighter. With a click, the lighter sparked, but the flame was quickly blown out by the cold wind from the alley entrance.
But in that brief moment of light, Li Tian saw that there was indeed a person lying on the ground.
Seeing that it was a person, Li Tian quickly walked over. To his surprise, the closer he got, the more he could smell an unfamiliar, sweet fragrance.
Could it be...
Surprised, Li Tian walked closer and clicked the lighter again.
A shocking scene appeared before his eyes. By the weak light of the lighter, he suddenly saw a woman lying on the ground.
A woman in a black leather outfit.
Seeing it was a woman, Li Tian was almost stunned.
"Wow, what's a woman doing here in the middle of the night?" Li Tian muttered.
"Hey, miss, are you okay?" Li Tian called out as he approached.
But in the dark alley, there was no response. The woman lying on the ground was as still as a corpse.
"Is she dead?"
Li Tian was shocked and quickly reached out to feel her breath. She wasn't dead; she was still breathing. Li Tian was suddenly excited.
But then he was puzzled.
Who was the woman on the ground?
