Yu Xuan followed Ji Naitang into the elevator. They got out of the elevator and walked through a long corridor. The atmosphere here was somewhat depressing and made one unable to breathe.
They stopped at the door of a hospital room. The nurse saw it was Ji Naitang and went over to open the door. Ji Naitang didn’t say a word and started walking inside.
He looked around and finally saw a pair of feet wearing hospital slippers underneath the curtain. He walked over lightly. He moved the curtain out of the way first.
There was a man crouching behind the curtain. He had a clean crew cut. Although he was over thirty-two years old, he looked young, but he didn’t seem to be in good health.
This man was Ji Naitang’s little uncle: Qiu Nanshu. Ji Naitang crouched down at eye level to Qiu Nanshu. He whispered, “Uncle, what are you doing?”
Qiu Nanshu raised his index finger to his mouth and shushed him. He whispered back, “I’m playing hide and seek. Don’t let someone see me.”
“Who are you playing hide and seek with?”
“A lot of people.” Qiu Nanshu pointed to nightstand and said, “That one.” Then he pointed to the wardrobe and said, “There’s one there. I can’t let them find me. I have to hide.”
“Can I join you?”
Qiu Nanshu tilted his head to think about it. He nodded. “Okay. I’ll let you join us, but you can’t say that I’m hiding here.”
“Okay. I’ll hide with you.”
Ji Naitang moved closer to him. This move let Qiu Nanshu see Yu Xuan who was behind him. He quickly shouted, “Don’t come over. Don’t catch me!”
Yu Xuan, who was trying to move over, stopped. He looked tearfully at Qiu Nanshu in the corner. His mouth trembled, but he was unable to say a word.
Qiu Nanshu stood up to run away. Ji Naitang quickly hugged him and asked, “Uncle, where are you going?”
“I’m going to run away. Bad people are coming. They’re going to catch me. I’m going to run away. TangTang. Where’s TangTang?”
Ji Naitang held back his tears and said softly, “I’m right here. I’m TangTang. Uncle, take a good look at me.”
Qiu Nanshu looked carefully at Ji Naitang. After a while, he asked tentatively, “TangTang?”
“It’s me…… It’s me.”
Qiu Nanshu hugged him and said happily, “TangTang, I thought you were missing. I couldn’t find you. I looked in a lot of places.”
“I’m sorry. I ran off. I won’t run off again.”
“Be good. We will always be together in the future. And little Yu too. TangTang, little Yu, don’t worry. I’m here. I will protect you two. I won’t let them hurt you.”
Ji Naitang cried and hugged Qiu Nanshu. Qiu Nanshu patted his back and said, “Don’t cry. Don’t cry, TangTang. I will take you two away. We’ll go far away. No one will dare to hit you two anymore. The three of us will live together from now on. I will make money and I won’t let you starve and suffer. Don’t cry.”
Ji Naitang cried without a sound. He couldn’t say anything comforting at all. Qiu Nanshu raised his hands to wipe his tears off. He patiently coaxed, “Don’t cry, TangTang. I’m right here. I’ll protect and dote on you two.”
“Uncle……”
“Be good. Our TangTang isn’t a crybaby. Little Yu isn’t either……” Qiu Nanshu noticed something was wrong. He looked around and asked in a panic, “Where’s little Yu? Why isn’t little Yu here?”
Ji Naitang lowered his head and cried. Qiu Nanshu’s mood started to become unstable. “Where did little Yu go? How come I don’t see him? Little Yu…… Where you are hiding, little Yu? It’s your little uncle. I’m here to pick you up. Don’t be scared……”
Ji Naitang couldn’t bear to watch anymore. He looked at the wall and more tears fell down uncontrollably. And Yu Xuan had already cried until he couldn’t speak.
Qiu Nanshu couldn’t find the person and whispered, “Little Yu isn’t here……” He seemed to think of something and suddenly shouted frantically, “No. No, it’s not true. That’s not true. That’s not little Yu. He’s not dead…… Why is it like this? It’s me. The person who should have died is me. It’s me……”
The nurse saw his emotions going out of control. He even wanted to bang his head against the wall. Ji Naitang and Yu Xuan went over to pull him back. The nurse gave Qiu Nanshu a sedative.
Ji Naitang and Yu Xuan retreated to the door. Every time Ji Naitang came here, he would just chat a bit with Qiu Nanshu and soon leave. He was afraid that if he stayed too long, he would arouse Qiu Nanshu’s memories and his pain would make him lose control.
Ji Naitang raised his hand to wipe the tears off his face. He asked Yu Xuan coldly, “Is this what you wanted to see? Are you satisfied now? Please don’t come here to bother him again.”
Yu Xuan collapsed. He looked extremely regretful. But there was no medicine for regret in this world, so it was useless even if he cried any more.
